Irrigation and drainage in the new millennium
Presented at the 2000 USCID international conference, Challenges facing irrigation and drainage in the new millennium on June 20-24 in Fort Collins, Colorado.Includes bibliographical references. The loss of land for the production of agricultural crops due to salinity is a major problem worldwide. The means to deal with saline soils by the development of salt-tolerant crops, by leaching, or by using desalinized water are not feasible for many developing areas of the world. VA mycorrhizae (VAM) are known to alleviate salt stress on plants, but a practical method to establish them has not been developed. Preinoculation of lettuce or onion plants with mixtures of VAM fungi cultured from saline or nonsaline soils before transplant into sodic soils was shown to be an effective means of increasing plant tolerance to salt toxicity. This method could be practical for farmers needing to grow crops on saline soils
Shear Lag Sutures: Improved Suture Repair through the use of Adhesives
Conventional surgical suture is mechanically limited by the ability of the suture to transfer load to tissue at suture anchor points. Sutures coated with adhesives can improve mechanical load transfer beyond the range of performance of existing suture methods, thereby strengthening orthopaedic repairs and decreasing the risk of failure. The mechanical properties of suitable adhesives were identified using a shear lag model. Examination of the design space for an optimal adhesive demonstrated requirements for strong adhesion and low stiffness to maximize strength. As a proof of concept, cyanoacrylate-coated sutures were used to perform a clinically relevant flexor digitorum profundus tendon repair in cadaver tissue. Even with this non-ideal adhesive, the maximum load resisted by repaired cadaveric canine flexor tendon increased by ∼ 17.0% compared to standard repairs without adhesive. To rapidly assess adhesive binding to tendon, we additionally developed a lap shear test method using bovine deep digital flexor tendons as the adherends. Further study is needed to develop a strongly adherent, compliant adhesive within the optimal design space described by the model
On the Origins of Memes by Means of Fringe Web Communities
Internet memes are increasingly used to sway and manipulate public opinion.
This prompts the need to study their propagation, evolution, and influence
across the Web. In this paper, we detect and measure the propagation of memes
across multiple Web communities, using a processing pipeline based on
perceptual hashing and clustering techniques, and a dataset of 160M images from
2.6B posts gathered from Twitter, Reddit, 4chan's Politically Incorrect board
(/pol/), and Gab, over the course of 13 months. We group the images posted on
fringe Web communities (/pol/, Gab, and The_Donald subreddit) into clusters,
annotate them using meme metadata obtained from Know Your Meme, and also map
images from mainstream communities (Twitter and Reddit) to the clusters.
Our analysis provides an assessment of the popularity and diversity of memes
in the context of each community, showing, e.g., that racist memes are
extremely common in fringe Web communities. We also find a substantial number
of politics-related memes on both mainstream and fringe Web communities,
supporting media reports that memes might be used to enhance or harm
politicians. Finally, we use Hawkes processes to model the interplay between
Web communities and quantify their reciprocal influence, finding that /pol/
substantially influences the meme ecosystem with the number of memes it
produces, while \td has a higher success rate in pushing them to other
communities.Comment: A shorter version of this paper appears in the Proceedings of 18th

Frequency and type of adverse analytical findings in athletics: Differences among disciplines.
Athletics is a highly diverse sport that contains a set of disciplines grouped into jumps,
throws, races of varying distances, and combined events. From a physiological standpoint,
the physical capabilities linked to success are quite different among
disciplines, with varying involvements of muscle strength, muscle power, and
endurance. Thus, the use of banned substances in athletics might be dictated by physical
dimensions of each discipline. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to
analyse the number and distribution of adverse analytical findings per drug class in
athletic disciplines. The data included in this investigation were gathered from the
Anti-Doping Testing Figure Report made available by the World Anti-Doping Agency
(from 2016 to 2018). Interestingly, there were no differences in the frequency of
adverse findings (overall, 0.95%, range from 0.77 to 1.70%) among disciplines
despite long distance runners having the highest number of samples analysed per year
( 9812 samples/year). Sprinters and throwers presented abnormally high
proportions of adverse analytical findings within the group of anabolic agents
(p < 0.01); middle- and long-distance runners presented atypically high proportions of
findings related to peptide hormones and growth factors (p < 0.01); racewalkers presented
atypically high proportions of banned diuretics and masking agents (p = 0.05).
These results suggest that the proportion of athletes that are using banned substances
is similar among the different disciplines of athletics. However, there are substantial
differences in the class of drugs more commonly used in each discipline. This information
can be used to effectively enhance anti-doping testing protocols in athletics.post-print1.911 K
Sweet Taste Receptor Expressed in Pancreatic β-Cells Activates the Calcium and Cyclic AMP Signaling Systems and Stimulates Insulin Secretion
BACKGROUND:Sweet taste receptor is expressed in the taste buds and enteroendocrine cells acting as a sugar sensor. We investigated the expression and function of the sweet taste receptor in MIN6 cells and mouse islets. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:The expression of the sweet taste receptor was determined by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Changes in cytoplasmic Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)](c)) and cAMP ([cAMP](c)) were monitored in MIN6 cells using fura-2 and Epac1-camps. Activation of protein kinase C was monitored by measuring translocation of MARCKS-GFP. Insulin was measured by radioimmunoassay. mRNA for T1R2, T1R3, and gustducin was expressed in MIN6 cells. In these cells, artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, succharin, and acesulfame-K increased insulin secretion and augmented secretion induced by glucose. Sucralose increased biphasic increase in [Ca(2+)](c). The second sustained phase was blocked by removal of extracellular calcium and addition of nifedipine. An inhibitor of inositol(1, 4, 5)-trisphophate receptor, 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate, blocked both phases of [Ca(2+)](c) response. The effect of sucralose on [Ca(2+)](c) was inhibited by gurmarin, an inhibitor of the sweet taste receptor, but not affected by a G(q) inhibitor. Sucralose also induced sustained elevation of [cAMP](c), which was only partially inhibited by removal of extracellular calcium and nifedipine. Finally, mouse islets expressed T1R2 and T1R3, and artificial sweeteners stimulated insulin secretion. CONCLUSIONS:Sweet taste receptor is expressed in beta-cells, and activation of this receptor induces insulin secretion by Ca(2+) and cAMP-dependent mechanisms
