    Do current-density nonlinearities cut off the glass transition?

    Extended mode coupling theories for dense fluids predict that nonlinear current-density couplings cut off the singular `ideal glass transition', present in the standard mode coupling theory where such couplings are ignored. We suggest here that, rather than allowing for activated processes as sometimes supposed, contributions from current-density couplings are always negligible close to a glass transition. We discuss in schematic terms how activated processes can nonetheless cut off the transition, by causing the memory function to become linear in correlators at late times.Comment: 4 page

    We numerically study the interplay between heterogeneous dynamics and properties of negatively curved regions of the potential energy surface in a model glassy system. We find that the unstable modes of saddles and quasi-saddles undergo a localization transition close to the Mode-Coupling critical temperature. We also find evidence of a positive spatial correlation between clusters of particles having large displacements in the unstable modes and dynamical heterogeneities.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Europhys.     Abstract Background Static and fixated meshes to repair mobile structures like the groin may seem a procedural incongruence. Inguinal hernia is described as a degenerative disease. Therefore, the objective of disease treatment should be the regeneration of wasted tissue. The fibrotic scar plate, a typical biologic response of conventional static meshes, does not represent tissue regeneration but rather a foreign body reaction. These contrasting aspects seem to be related to high complication rates of inguinal herniorrhaphy. Recent studies concerning the pathophysiology of the groin have led to the development of new concepts for repairing inguinal protrusions. A proprietary designed 3D dynamic responsive implant showing regenerative biologic response is the result of this studies. Materials and methods A cohort of 389 individuals underwent open inguinal hernia repair with the 3D dynamic responsive implant following a specific surgical technique. Thanks to the inherent dynamic properties, all procedures were performed without need for fixation of the 3D prosthesis. Results The outcomes of the dynamic hernia repair procedure were reduced postoperative pain and minimized overall complication rates, also long term. Moreover, no patient discomfort or chronic pain was reported. Conclusions Inguinal hernia repair with the 3D dynamic responsive implant ProFlor seems to represent an effective concept change for the treatment of this widespread degenerative disease. Moving in synchrony with the groin, implanted without need of fixation and acting as a regenerative scaffold, ProFlor™ appears to possess all that is needed for a physiologic and pathogenetical consequent treatment of inguinal protrusions leading to a dramatic lessening of intra- and postoperative complications

    Dynamic Responsive Inguinal Scaffold Activates Myogenic Growth Factors Finalizing the Regeneration of the Herniated Groin

    Background: Postoperative chronic pain caused by fixation and/or fibrotic incorporation of hernia meshes are the main concerns in inguinal herniorrhaphy. As inguinal hernia is a degenerative disease, logically the treatment should aim at stopping degeneration and activating regeneration. Unfortunately, in conventional prosthetic herniorrhaphy no relationship exists between pathogenesis and treatment. To overcome these incongruences, a 3D dynamic responsive multilamellar scaffold has been developed for fixation-free inguinal hernia repair. Made of polypropylene like conventional flat meshes, the dynamic behavior of the scaffold allows for the regeneration of all typical inguinal components: connective tissue, vessels, nerves, and myocytes. This investigation aims to demonstrate that, moving in tune with the groin, the 3D scaffold attracts myogenic growth factors activating the development of mature myocytes and, thus, re-establishing the herniated inguinal barrier. Methods: Biopsy samples excised from the 3D scaffold at different postoperative stages were stained with H&E and Azan–Mallory; immunohistochemistry for NGF and NGFR p75 was performed to verify the degree of involvement of muscular growth factors in the neomyogenesis. Results: Histological evidence of progressive muscle development and immunohistochemical proof of NFG and NFGRp75 contribution in neomyogenesis within the 3D scaffold was documented and statistically validated. Conclusion: The investigation appears to confirm that a 3D polypropylene scaffold designed to confer dynamic responsivity, unlike the fibrotic scar plate of static meshes, attracts myogenic growth factors turning the biological response into tissue regeneration.     Phosphine is the most important commonly used fumigant for the control of stored product insects in warehouses and processing facilities globally. However, the improper and extensive use has led to reduced susceptibility to phosphine for several insect species and strains in many parts of the world. To evaluate and quantify this phenomenon, Detia Degesch developed the Detia Degesch Phosphine Tolerance Test Kit (DDPTTK) more than 10 years ago. The use of DDPTTK is based on the exposure of the insects on a high concentration of phosphine (e.g. 3000 ppm) for short exposure periods (e.g. 8-15 min). This kit can be used on site by the fumigation and food industry, and can provide immediate results on the tolerance status of the insect strains that are to be treated. So far, the instructions of DDPTTK refer only to a six insect species. In this work, data for the expansion of knowledge about other species is provided, in order to broaden the spectrum of cases where the kit can be used.     MetricGAN+/- : increasing robustness of noise reduction on unseen data

    Training of speech enhancement systems often does not incorporate knowledge of human perception and thus can lead to unnatural sounding results. Incorporating psychoacoustically motivated speech perception metrics as part of model training via a predictor network has recently gained interest. However, the performance of such predictors is limited by the distribution of metric scores that appear in the training data. In this work, we propose MetricGAN+/- (an extension of MetricGAN+, one such metric-motivated system) which introduces an additional network - a "de-generator" which attempts to improve the robustness of the prediction network (and by extension of the generator) by ensuring observation of a wider range of metric scores in training. Experimental results on the VoiceBank-DEMAND dataset show relative improvement in PESQ score of 3.8% (3.05 vs 3.22 PESQ score), as well as better generalisation to unseen noise and speech

    Perceive and predict: self-supervised speech representation based loss functions for speech enhancement

    Recent work in the domain of speech enhancement has explored the use of self-supervised speech representations to aid in the training of neural speech enhancement models. However, much of this work focuses on using the deepest or final outputs of self supervised speech representation models, rather than the earlier feature encodings. The use of self supervised representations in such a way is often not fully motivated. In this work it is shown that the distance between the feature encodings of clean and noisy speech correlate strongly with psychoacoustically motivated measures of speech quality and intelligibility, as well as with human Mean Opinion Score (MOS) ratings. Experiments using this distance as a loss function are performed and improved performance over the use of STFT spectrogram distance based loss as well as other common loss functions from speech enhancement literature is demonstrated using objective measures such as perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) and short-time objective intelligibility (STOI)

    Inherent-Structure Dynamics and Diffusion in Liquids

    The self-diffusion constant D is expressed in terms of transitions among the local minima of the potential (inherent structure, IS) and their correlations. The formulae are evaluated and tested against simulation in the supercooled, unit-density Lennard-Jones liquid. The approximation of uncorrelated IS-transition (IST) vectors, D_{0}, greatly exceeds D in the upper temperature range, but merges with simulation at reduced T ~ 0.50. Since uncorrelated IST are associated with a hopping mechanism, the condition D ~ D_{0} provides a new way to identify the crossover to hopping. The results suggest that theories of diffusion in deeply supercooled liquids may be based on weakly correlated IST.Comment: submitted to PR

    Optimized fishing through periodically harvested closures

    1. Periodically harvested closures (PHCs) are a traditional form of fisheries management that improve fishing efficiency during harvests, partly by reducing fish wariness to fishers during closed periods. However, whether PHCs also result in high yields and healthy marine ecosystems is unknown, even as PHCs are being promoted as a culturally appropriate management tool in the Indo-Pacific.2. We integrated field-derived estimates of change in fish wariness into a bioeconomic fisheries model to quantify to what degree PHCs can maximize harvest efficiency, fisheries yield and fish stock biomass.3. Our model indicated that PHCs that had a closure period of one to a few years between a single pulse harvest were able to generate equivalent fisheries yield and stock biomass levels, with greater harvest efficiency than was able to be achieved using permanent closures and other fisheries management tools.4. Fish life-history traits had little impact on the optimality of PHCs in maximizing the triple objective of harvest efficiency, fisheries yield and stock abundance, with overfishing similarly having little effect at anything under extreme levels. Under moderate overfishing, there was a trade-off between PHCs, which maximised harvest efficiency, and no-take permanent closures that maximised yield. However, the former outweighed the latter, and only at extreme levels of overfishing, where stock was reduced to < 18 % of unfished biomass, were permanent closures favoured over PHCs
