    We investigate how different learning restrictions reduce learning power and how the different restrictions relate to one another. We give a complete map for nine different restrictions both for the cases of complete information learning and set-driven learning. This completes the picture for these well-studied \emph{delayable} learning restrictions. A further insight is gained by different characterizations of \emph{conservative} learning in terms of variants of \emph{cautious} learning.     Oscillator Strengths for B-X, C-X, and E-X Transitions in Carbon Monoxide

    Band oscillator strengths for electronic transitions in CO were obtained at the Synchrotron Radiation Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our focus was on transitions that are observed in interstellar spectra with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer; these transitions are also important in studies of selective isotope photodissociation where fractionation among isotopomers can occur. Absorption from the ground state (X ^1Sigma^+ v'' = 0) to A ^1Pi (v'= 5), B ^1Sigma^+ (v' = 0, 1), C ^1Sigma^+ (v' = 0, 1), and E ^1Pi (v' = 0) was measured. Fits to the A - X (5, 0) band, whose oscillator strength is well known, yielded the necessary column density and excitation temperature. These parameters were used in a least-squares fit of the observed profiles for the transitions of interest to extract their band oscillator strengths. Our oscillator strengths are in excellent agreement with results from recent experiments using a variety of techniques. This agreement provides the basis for a self-consistent set of f-values at far ultraviolet wavelengths for studies of interstellar (and stellar) CO.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, ApJS (in press

    An approach to the Riemann problem in the light of a reformulation of the state equation for SPH inviscid ideal flows: a highlight on spiral hydrodynamics in accretion discs

    In physically inviscid fluid dynamics, "shock capturing" methods adopt either an artificial viscosity contribution or an appropriate Riemann solver algorithm. These techniques are necessary to solve the strictly hyperbolic Euler equations if flow discontinuities (the Riemann problem) are to be solved. A necessary dissipation is normally used in such cases. An explicit artificial viscosity contribution is normally adopted to smooth out spurious heating and to treat transport phenomena. Such a treatment of inviscid flows is also widely adopted in the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) finite volume free Lagrangian scheme. In other cases, the intrinsic dissipation of Godunov-type methods is implicitly useful. Instead "shock tracking" methods normally use the Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions to solve such problems. A simple, effective solution of the Riemann problem in inviscid ideal gases is here proposed, based on an empirical reformulation of the equation of state (EoS) in the Euler equations in fluid dynamics, whose limit for a motionless gas coincides with the classical EoS of ideal gases. The application of such an effective solution to the Riemann problem excludes any dependence, in the transport phenomena, on particle smoothing resolution length hh in non viscous SPH flows. Results on 1D shock tube tests, as well as examples of application for 2D turbulence and 2D shear flows are here shown. As an astrophysical application, a much better identification of spiral structures in accretion discs in a close binary (CB), as a result of this reformulation is also shown here.Comment: 19 pages, 17 figure

    Emergent organization and responsive technologies in crisis: Creating connections or enabling divides

    I articulate and employ a situational boundary-making approach to study the emergence of organization and technology at a shelter during Hurricane Katrina. My analysis of qualitative data shows how emergent organization occurred at the shelter as situational entanglements consisting of three main elements: a salient moment in time, key actors, and boundary-making practices. Key actors' responses to salient moments in time enacted both distinction and dependency between organizational and technological actors, resulting in a divided organization. This analysis extends emergent approaches by showing how organization and technology are situationally organized and emerges through the (in)determinacy of meaning. Implications are also discussed for disaster managers to assess the success and failure of technology during a response. © The Author(s) 2012

    Pilot study of Lokomat versus manual-assisted treadmill training for locomotor recovery post-stroke

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While manually-assisted body-weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) has revealed improved locomotor function in persons with post-stroke hemiparesis, outcomes are inconsistent and it is very labor intensive. Thus an alternate treatment approach is desirable. Objectives of this pilot study were to: 1) compare the efficacy of body-weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) combined with the Lokomat robotic gait orthosis versus manually-assisted BWSTT for locomotor training post-stroke, and 2) assess effects of fast versus slow treadmill training speed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixteen volunteers with chronic hemiparetic gait (0.62 ± 0.30 m/s) post-stroke were randomly allocated to Lokomat (n = 8) or manual-BWSTT (n = 8) 3×/wk for 4 weeks. Groups were also stratified by fast (mean 0.92 ± 0.15 m/s) or slow (0.58 ± 0.12 m/s) training speeds. The primary outcomes were self-selected overground walking speed and paretic step length ratio. Secondary outcomes included: fast overground walking speed, 6-minute walk test, and a battery of clinical measures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No significant differences in primary outcomes were revealed between Lokomat and manual groups as a result of training. However, within the Lokomat group, self-selected walk speed, paretic step length ratio, and four of the six secondary measures improved (<it>p </it>= 0.04–0.05, effect sizes = 0.19–0.60). Within the manual group, only balance scores improved (<it>p </it>= 0.02, effect size = 0.57). Group differences between fast and slow training groups were not revealed (<it>p </it>≥ 0.28).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Results suggest that Lokomat training may have advantages over manual-BWSTT following a modest intervention dose in chronic hemiparetic persons and further, that our training speeds produce similar gait improvements. Suggestions for a larger randomized controlled trial with optimal study parameters are provided.</p

    Mann and gender in Old English prose : a pilot study

    It has long been known that OE mann was used in gender-neutral as well as gender-specific contexts. Because of the enormous volume of its attestations in Old English prose, the more precise usage patterns of mann remain, however, largely uncharted, and existing lexicographical tools provide only a basic picture. This article aims to present a preliminary study of the various uses of mann as attested in Old English prose, particularly in its surprisingly consistent use by an individual author, namely that of the ninth-century Old English Martyrology. Patterns emerging from this text are then tested against other prose material. Particular attention is paid to gender-specific usage, examples of which are shown to be exceptional for a word which largely occurs in gender-neutral contexts.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Reliability and validity of two fitness tracker devices in the laboratory and home environment for older community-dwelling people

    © 2018 The Author(s). Background: Two-thirds of older Australians are sedentary. Fitness trackers have been popular with younger people and may encourage older adults to become more active. Older adults may have different gait patterns and as such it is important to establish whether fitness trackers are valid and reliable for this population. The aim of the study was to test the reliability and validity of two fitness trackers (Fitbit Flex and ChargeHR) by step count when worn by older adults. Reliability and validity were tested in two conditions: 1) in the laboratory using a two-minute-walk-test (2MWT) and 2) in a free-living environment. Methods: Two 2MWTs were completed while wearing the fitness trackers. Participants were videoed during each test. Participants were then given one fitness tracker and a GENEactiv accelerometer to wear at home for 14-days. Results: Thirty-one participants completed two 2MWTs and 30 completed the free-living procedure. Intra Class Correlation's of the fitness trackers with direct observation of steps (criterion validity) was high (ICC:0.86,95%CI:0.76,0.93). However, both fitness trackers underestimated steps. Excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.75) was found between the two 2MWTs for each device, particularly the ChargeHR devices. Good strength of agreement was found for total distance and steps (fitness tracker) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (GENEactiv) for the free-living environment (Spearman Rho's 0.78 and 0.74 respectively). Conclusion: Reliability and validity of the Flex and ChargeHR when worn by older adults is good, however both devices underestimated step count within the laboratory environment. These fitness trackers appear suitable for consumer use and promoting physical activity for older adults
