Detection and identification of pathogenic trypanosome species in tsetse flies along the Comoe River in Cote d'Ivoire
In order to identify pathogenic trypanosomes responsible for African trypanosomiasis, and to better understand tsetse-trypanosome relationships, surveys were undertaken in three sites located in different eco-climatic areas in Cote d'Ivoire during the dry and rainy seasons. Tsetse flies were caught during five consecutive days using biconical traps, dissected and microscopically examined looking for trypanosome infection. Samples from infected flies were tested by PCR using specific primers for Trypanosoma brucei s.l., T. congolense savannah type, T. congolense forest type and T. vivax. Of 1941 tsetse flies caught including four species, i.e. Glossina palpalis palpalis, G. p. gambiensis, G. tachinoides and G. medicorum, 513 (26%) were dissected and 60 (12%) were found positive by microscopy. Up to 41% of the infections were due to T. congolense savannah type, 30% to T. vivax, 20% to T. congolense forest type and 9% due to T. brucei s.l. All four trypanosome species and subgroups were identified from G. tachinoides and G. p. palpalis, while only two were isolated from G. p. gambiensis (T. brucei s.l., T. congolense savannah type) and G. medicorum (T. congolense forest, savannah types). Mixed infections were found in 25% of cases and all involved T. congolense savannah type with another trypanosome species. The simultaneous occurrence of T. brucei s.l., and tsetse from the palpalis group may suggest that human trypanosomiasis can still be a constraint in these localities, while high rates of T. congolense and T. vivax in the area suggest a potential risk of animal trypanosomiasis in livestock along the Comoe River
Motion-Induced Radiation from a Dynamically Deforming Mirror
A path integral formulation is developed to study the spectrum of radiation
from a perfectly reflecting (conducting) surface. It allows us to study
arbitrary deformations in space and time. The spectrum is calculated to second
order in the height function. For a harmonic traveling wave on the surface, we
find many different regimes in which the radiation is restricted to certain
directions. It is shown that high frequency photons are emitted in a beam with
relatively low angular dispersion whose direction can be controlled by the

Dissipative Van der Waals interaction between a small particle and a metal surface
We use a general theory of the fluctuating electromagnetic field to calculate
the friction force acting on a small neutral particle, e.g., a physisorbed
molecule, or a nanoscale object with arbitrary dispersive and absorptive
dielectric properties, moving near a metal surface. We consider the dependence
of the electromagnetic friction on the temperature , the separation , and
discuss the role of screening, non-local and retardation effects. We find that
for high resistivity materials, the dissipative van der Waals interaction can
be an important mechanism of vibrational energy relaxation of physisorbed
molecules, and friction for microscopic solids. Several controversial topics
related to electromagnetic dissipative shear stress is considered. The problem

Strongly Temperature Dependent Sliding Friction for a Superconducting Interface
A sudden drop in mechanical friction, between an adsorbed nitrogen monolayer
and a lead substrate, occurs when the lead passes through the superconducting
transition temperature. We attribute this effect to a sudden drop at the
superconducting transition temperature of the substrate Ohmic heating. The
Ohmic heating is due to the electronic screening current that results from the

The `Friction' of Vacuum, and other Fluctuation-Induced Forces
The static Casimir effect describes an attractive force between two
conducting plates, due to quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic (EM)
field in the intervening space. {\it Thermal fluctuations} of correlated fluids
(such as critical mixtures, super-fluids, liquid crystals, or electrolytes) are
also modified by the boundaries, resulting in finite-size corrections at
criticality, and additional forces that effect wetting and layering phenomena.
Modified fluctuations of the EM field can also account for the `van der Waals'
interaction between conducting spheres, and have analogs in the
fluctuation--induced interactions between inclusions on a membrane. We employ a
path integral formalism to study these phenomena for boundaries of arbitrary
shape. This allows us to examine the many unexpected phenomena of the dynamic
Casimir effect due to moving boundaries. With the inclusion of quantum
fluctuations, the EM vacuum behaves essentially as a complex fluid, and
modifies the motion of objects through it. In particular, from the mechanical
response function of the EM vacuum, we extract a plethora of interesting
results, the most notable being: (i) The effective mass of a plate depends on
its shape, and becomes anisotropic. (ii) There is dissipation and damping of
the motion, again dependent upon shape and direction of motion, due to emission
of photons. (iii) There is a continuous spectrum of resonant cavity modes that

Design considerations in a clinical trial of a cognitive behavioural intervention for the management of low back pain in primary care : Back Skills Training Trial
Background
Low back pain (LBP) is a major public health problem. Risk factors for the development and persistence of LBP include physical and psychological factors. However, most research activity has focused on physical solutions including manipulation, exercise training and activity promotion.
Methods/Design
This randomised controlled trial will establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a group programme, based on cognitive behavioural principles, for the management of sub-acute and chronic LBP in primary care. Our primary outcomes are disease specific measures of pain and function. Secondary outcomes include back beliefs, generic health related quality of life and resource use. All outcomes are measured over 12 months. Participants randomised to the intervention arm are invited to attend up to six weekly sessions each of 90 minutes; each group has 6–8 participants. A parallel qualitative study will aid the evaluation of the intervention.

Revisiting the Immune Trypanolysis Test to Optimise Epidemiological Surveillance and Control of Sleeping Sickness in West Africa
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) due to Trypanosoma brucei (T.b.) gambiense is usually diagnosed using two sequential steps: first the card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) used for serological screening, followed by parasitological methods to confirm the disease. Currently, CATT will continue to be used as a test for mass screening because of its simplicity and high sensitivity; however, its performance as a tool of surveillance in areas where prevalence is low is poor because of its limited specificity. Hence in the context of HAT elimination, there is a crucial need for a better marker of contact with T.b. gambiense in humans. We evaluated here an existing highly specific serological tool, the trypanolysis test (TL). We evaluated TL in active, latent and historical HAT foci in Guinea, CĂ´te d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. We found that TL was a marker for exposure to T.b. gambiense. We propose that TL should be used as a surveillance tool to monitor HAT elimination
