    A characterization of the Artin-Mumford curve

    Full text link
    Let M\mathcal{M} be the Artin-Mumford curve over the finite prime field Fp\mathbb{F}_p with p>2p>2. By a result of Valentini and Madan, \mbox{Aut}_{\mathbb{F}_p}(\mathcal{M})\cong H with H=(Cp×Cp)⋊Dp−1H=(C_p\times C_p)\rtimes D_{p-1}. We prove that if X\mathcal{X} is an algebraic curve of genus g=(p−1)2g=(p-1)^2 such that \mbox{Aut}_{\mathbb{F}_p}(\mathcal{X}) contains a subgroup isomorphic to HH then X\mathcal{X} is birationally equivalent over Fp\mathbb{F}_p to the Artin-Mumford curve M\mathcal{M}

    Post-traumatic complications in the distai fotelimb of a Spitz dog. Evaluation and outcome of a physiatric approach

    Get PDF
    open4noMetacarpal fractures in canine forelimbs generally occur as a consequence of trauma. Conservative or surgical approaches can be used to manage these fractures. Rehabilitation is a tool used in Veterinary Medicine to promote the recovery of the musculoske-letal system, addressing both neurological and orthopaedic lesions. In this case report, we discuss the physiatric approach allowed to regain weight-bearing and mobility of left forelimb in a 3 years old female Spitz dog with a delayed skin and bone union of multiple exposed fractures of metacarpal bones occurred as surgical complication after a road accident.embargoed_20200831Lopedote M.; Bolzoni J..; Valentini S.; Spinella G.Lopedote M.; Bolzoni J.; Valentini S.; Spinella G

    Astrophysical and Cosmological Tests of Quantum Theory

    Get PDF
    We discuss several proposals for astrophysical and cosmological tests of quantum theory. The tests are motivated by deterministic hidden-variables theories, and in particular by the view that quantum physics is merely an effective theory of an equilibrium state. The proposed tests involve searching for nonequilibrium violations of quantum theory in: primordial inflaton fluctuations imprinted on the cosmic microwave background, relic cosmological particles, Hawking radiation, photons with entangled partners inside black holes, neutrino oscillations, and particles from very distant sources.Comment: 25 pages. Total Perineal Prostatectomy: A Retrospective Study in Six Dogs

    Get PDF
    open4noPerineal hernia refers to the herniation of pelvic and abdominal viscera into the subcu-taneous perineal region through a pelvic diaphragm weakness: a concomitant prostatic disease is observed in 25–59% of cases. Prostatectomy involves the removal of the prostate, either partially (partial prostatectomy) or completely (total prostatectomy). In case of complicated perineal hernia, staged procedures are recommended: celiotomy in order to perform colopexy, vasopexy, cystopexy, and/or to treat the prostatic disease, and perineal access in order to repair the perineal hernia. Very few reports relate prostatectomy using a perineal approach and, to the extent of the author’s knowl-edge, this technique has not been thoroughly investigated in the literature. The aim of this article is to retrospectively describe the total perineal prostatectomy in dogs presenting perineal hernia with concomitant prostatic diseases which required the removal of the gland. The experience in six dogs (three dogs with the prostate within hernial contents and three dogs with intrapelvic prostate) is reported as well as advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the surgical procedure. In the authors’ clinical practice, total perineal prostatectomy has been a useful surgical approach to canine prostatic diseases, proven to be safe, well tolerated, and effective.openZambelli D.; Ballotta G.; Valentini S.; Cunto M.Zambelli D.; Ballotta G.; Valentini S.; Cunto M

    Partial Vaginectomy, Complete Vaginectomy, Partial Vestibule-Vaginectomy, Vulvo-Vestibule-Vaginectomy and Vulvo-Vestibulectomy: Different Surgical Procedure in Order to Better Approach Vaginal Diseases

    Get PDF
    open4noTotal or partial vulvo-vaginectomy or vaginectomy are not routinely performed due to the complexity of the techniques and because they are considered radical treatments. Little information can be found in the literature, as the same technique is often named in a different way by different authors, confusing the reader. Therefore, the aim of this essay is to describe five different surgical techniques: partial vaginectomy, complete vaginectomy, partial vestibule-vaginectomy, vulvo-vestibule-vaginectomy and vulvo-vestibulectomy. All techniques are described on the basis of the correct identification of the anatomical nomenclature related to structures involved in surgery, in order to give a more precise and unambiguous description and execution of surgical techniques. Moreover, possible intraoperative and perioperative complications and the authors’ clinical experience in 33 dogs are described. All techniques are well tolerated and could be curative in case of benign or malignant tumours that have not yet metastasized and palliative in other cases. Moreover, they are also useful for therapeutic purposes for chronic vaginitis, severe vaginal cysts or congenital abnormalities. It is our opinion that having five different available techniques to approach vaginal disease is useful to perform the best surgery according to the clinical findings, patient’s characteristics, technique invasiveness and whether it is palliative or not.openZambelli D.; Valentini S.; Ballotta G.; Cunto M.Zambelli D.; Valentini S.; Ballotta G.; Cunto M

    Solar wind collisional heating

    Get PDF
    To properly describe heating in weakly collisional turbulent plasmas such as the solar wind, inter-particle collisions should be taken into account. Collisions can convert ordered energy into heat by means of irreversible relaxation towards the thermal equilibrium. Recently, Pezzi et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 116, 2016, p. 145001) showed that the plasma collisionality is enhanced by the presence of fine structures in velocity space. Here, the analysis is extended by directly comparing the effects of the fully nonlinear Landau operator and a linearized Landau operator. By focusing on the relaxation towards the equilibrium of an out of equilibrium distribution function in a homogeneous force-free plasma, here it is pointed out that it is significant to retain nonlinearities in the collisional operator to quantify the importance of collisional effects. Although the presence of several characteristic times associated with the dissipation of different phase space structures is recovered in both the cases of the nonlinear and the linearized operators, the influence of these times is different in the two cases. In the linearized operator case, the recovered characteristic times are systematically larger than in the fully nonlinear operator case, this suggesting that fine velocity structures are dissipated slower if nonlinearities are neglected in the collisional operator
