"I am the instrument that people might play": participation and collaboration in contemporary art from Havana

    Get PDF
In my paper I will focus on the relational art projects of René Francisco Rodriguez, a Cuban artist and professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte, living and working in Havana. Cuba, its special political and economic situation and the social process it produces, are the point of departure for the artist, while at the same time his oeuvre is widely perceived outside the island. In his art projects René Francisco Rodriguez leaves the studio with the intention to participate in the life of Havana's people, engage in a kind of anthropological fieldwork and make art inspired by contact and collaboration. In this article I will give an account of his project "Agua Benita" (2008), realized in one of the urban districts of Havana, in direct contact with its inhabitants. The paper will contribute to the question about entanglement and borders between relational art and other social approaches and relations to people, like anthropological research as well as social and political engagement

The Amino Acid Sequence of the Adult Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris, Carnivora) Hemoglobins

The complete amino-acid sequences of the hemoglobins from the adult Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) have been determined on automatic liquid- and gas-phase sequenators. The globin chains were isolated by reverse phase HPLC on a column of Nucleosil-C4.7V-Acetylserine was detected by FAB-mass spectroscopy as TV-terminal amino acid residue of the βI chain. Comparing the sequences of the globin chains of the tiger with that of human Hb-A, 23 substitutions were recognized in the a, 29 in βI and 28 in the βII chain

Creativity Through the Eyes of Professional Artists in Cuba, Germany, and Russia

    No full text
Creativity plays an important role in the advancement of all societies around the world, yet the role of cultural influences on creativity is still unclear. Following systems theory, activity theory, and ecocultural theory, semistructured interviews with 30 renowned artists (writers, composers, and visual artists) from Cuba, Germany, and Russia were conducted to explore the complexity of the creative process and potential cultural differences. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using consensual qualitative research methodology. The following eight main domains resulted from the interviews: How I became an artist, What being an artist means to me, Creating as a cognitive process, Creating as an emotional process, Creating as a motivational process, Fostering factors of creativity, Hindering factors, and The role of culture in creating. Artists in the three countries similarly talked about creativity being a fluid process where ideas change, and elaborated on the role of intuition and the unconscious when creating art. Meaningful cross-cultural differences were seen among the artists of three cultural backgrounds in terms of attitudes about financial instability, in how they perceive themselves, in their art’s societal function, in the cognitive and in the emotional process of creating, and in terms of social connectedness. Results highlight (a) the complexity of the creative process going beyond cognitive factors and including motivational, emotional, and sociocultural factors, and (b) the cultural differences in the creative process. Results are beneficial for further developing a comprehensive theory of the creative process taking cultural differences into consideration

The Primary Structure of Hemoglobins of the Adult Jaguar (Panthera onco, Carnivora)

The primary structure of the hemoglobins from Jaguar (Panthera onco) are presented. Electrophoretic separations without and with a dissociating agent revealed the presence of two hemoglobin components, OL2Ăź\ and a2 02. The separation of the hemoglobin components was achieved by ion-exchange chromatography. The globin chains were separated by ion-exchange chromatography and also by reversed phase HPLC. The amino-acid sequences of the native chains and peptides were determined by liquid-phase and gas-phase sequencing. N-Acetylserine was detected by FAB-mass spectroscopy as N-terminal group of the Ăźl chain. The sequences are compared with that of human hemoglobin (Hb A)
