Development of a prototype for submarine communications in shallow waters
The Telecommunications Marine Laboratory (TML) of the University of
Cádiz takes part in a research project to study the intertidal sediments of the Bay
of Cádiz. The collection of samples from the seabed and the transmission of data
to the surface are performed by a Mini Profiler with four channels (MP4), which is
supplied by UNISENSE. Each channel processes the samples collected by a single
sensor. For power, control, and data transmission, a special wiring that connects the
submerged subsystem with the surface subsystem is used. The tension transmitted
by the cable to the MP4 structure makes its handling and positioning under water
more difficult. This article explains the technological solution developed by the TML
to replace some wiring from the MP4. For the prototype, two underwater acoustic
modems have been used and an electronic system has been developed based on the
Arduino platform, in order to multiplex, digitize, and transmit the data collected by
the MP4 sensors, eliminating the need to use wiring. The submerged subsystem has
an autonomous power supply by a battery.Peer Reviewe
Territorial incidence of Andalusian Government budget. An exercise of provincial fiscal balance
This paper performs an estimation of the “Junta de andalucía” fiscal flow with the andalusian provinces in 2001. In order to do that, we have developed a methodology that agrees with the fiscal flows’ usual estimations of the state with the autonomous communities. This methodology contains a detailed description of the incidence assumptions of receipts and expenditures that follows the habitual tradition. our paper also incorporates some methodological changes like the incorporation of the state-owned companies, a new treatment state grants to the “Junta de andalucía” and an analysis of the obtained outcome in the calculatio
Geoarchaeological analysis of the abandonment stage of the Valdepuentes aqueduct, in a sector of its last section (Cordoba, Spain)
This paper deals with the giving up and filling period of the final section of Valdepuentes roman aqueduct. We found evidences related to two phases. Firstly, a carbonated crust on the channel bottom was precipitated; it points out water was flowing after maintenance works was abandoned Later, as we can analyze in three sedimentary units, final specus filled up happened. Radiocarbon dating of two charcoals located inside of the upper channel sediments shows chronologies belonging to tenth century (997 AD ± 25 y 933 AD ± 43)
Relationship between intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery and arterial stiffness in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes: a case-series report
Background: We examined the relationship between the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (CCA-IMT) and arterial stiffness, assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV), the ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) and the augmentation index (AIx) in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes. Methods: A case-series study was made in 366 patients (105 diabetics and 261-non-diabetics). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed on a day of standard activity with the SpaceLabs 90207 system. AASI was calculated as "1-slope" from the within-person regression of diastolic-on-systolic ambulatory blood pressure readings. PWV and AIx were measured with the SphygmoCor system, and a Sonosite Micromax ultrasound unit was used for automatic measurements of CCA-IMT. Results: PWV, AASI and CCA-IMT were found to be greater in diabetic patients, while no differences in AIx were observed between the two groups. CCA-IMT was independently correlated to the three measures of arterial stiffness in both groups. We found an increase in CCA-IMT of 0.40, 0.24 and 0.36 mm in diabetics, and of 0.48, 0.17 and 0.55 mm in non-diabetics for each unit increase in AASI, AIx and PWV. The variability of CCA-IMT was explained mainly by AASI, AIx and gender in diabetic patients, and by age, gender, AASI and PWV in non-diabetic patients. Conclusions: CCA-IMT showed a positive correlation to PWV, AASI and AIx in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes. However, when adjusting for age, gender and heart rate, the association to PWV was lost in diabetic patients, in the same way as the association to Alx in non-diabetic patients. The present study demonstrates that the three measures taken to assess arterial stiffness in clinical practice are not interchangeable, nor do they behave equally in all subjects
