Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurements in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco

    Get PDF
We combine Rayleigh wave ellipticity, or H/V (horizontal to vertical) amplitude ratios, measurements obtained using teleseismic earthquake recordings and ambient noise cross correlations to provide improved constraints on the crustal models across the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. To obtain the H/V ratios, we use more than 250 shallow (h<40 km) teleseismic events with magnitudes Mw>6.0 recorded at more than 450 seismic stations. We also use all the multicomponent ambient noise cross correlations computed for each station pair for the time period 2010 to 2012. Periods between 20 and 100 seconds are investigated. We observe a good agreement between the uppermost geological features of the crust and the obtained Rayleigh H/V ratios, with low values in major mountain ranges and high ratios in sedimentary basins. Combination of Rayleigh H/V ratio measurements from both earthquakes and ambient noise data with phase velocities and other types of seismic data will help to better constrain the Earth’s structure at different crustal levels

Effect of Chitin Whiskers on the Molecular Dynamics of Carrageenan-Based Nanocomposites

[EN] Films of carrageenan (KC) and glycerol (g) with different contents of chitin nanowhiskers (CHW) were prepared by a solution casting process. The molecular dynamics of pure carrageenan (KC), carrageenan/glycerol (KCg) and KCg with different quantities of CHWs as a filler was studied using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The analysis of the CHW effect on the molecular mobility at the glass transition, T-g, indicates that non-attractive intermolecular interactions between KCg and CHW occur. The fragility index increased upon CHW incorporation, due to a reduction in the polymer chains mobility produced by the CHW confinement of the KCg network. The apparent activation energy associated with the relaxation dynamics of the chains at T-g slightly increased with the CHW content. The filler nature effect, CHW or montmorillonite (MMT), on the dynamic mobility of the composites was analyzed by comparing the dynamic behavior of both carrageenan-based composites (KCg/xCHW, KCg/xMMT).This research was funded by the DGCYT grant number [MAT2015-63955-R] and the Vice-Rectorate for Research of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and the the Peruvian Science and Technology Program (INNOVATE-PERU) And The APC was funded by MDPI.Carsí Rosique, M.; Sanchis Sánchez, MJ.; Gómez, CM.; Rodriguez, S.; García-Torres, F. Learning veterinary anatomy playing cards

Gamification is a dynamic tool for educational transformation useful to encourage student interest and enhance learning. Here we present a study conducted to investigate the effectiveness of an educational card game developed by us in veterinary anatomy practicals to reinforce knowledge acquisition in veterinary students. A total of four sets of cards were designed, each one with different anatomical topics (structure identification, articulation and positioning, clinical anatomy, and comparative anatomy); students were arranged in small groups (7–10 students per group) and played the game at the end of each anatomy practical session, discussing the corresponding questions, randomly chosen, as a team. This activity was highly valued by students, most of whom (>80%) expressed that the game was enjoyable, challenging, helpful to improve their knowledge and understanding in clinical anatomy, and effective for anatomy exam preparation. Thus, the use of educational games in practical sessions seems to improve student engagement in the learning process individually and as a team.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The development and implementation of a card game as a training resource that allows learning veterinary anatomy in a motivating and cooperative environment, promoting teamwork, relationships, and trust and communication between colleagues, is described. Stimulating the ability to solve problems as a team has provided help to students preparing for their exams in a more dynamic and enjoyable way.The authors are supported by Universidad CEU CardenalHerrera (PI83A-VV-19)Veterinari

Applications involving data acquisition from sensors need samples at a preset frequency rate, the filtering out of noise and/or analysis of certain frequency components. We propose a novel software architecture based on open-software hardware platforms which allows programmers to create data streams from input channels and easily implement filters and frequency analysis objects. The performances of the different classes given in the size of memory allocated and execution time (number of clock cycles) were analyzed in the low-cost platform Arduino Genuino. In addition, 11 people took part in an experiment in which they had to implement several exercises and complete a usability test. Sampling rates under 250 Hz (typical for many biomedical applications) makes it feasible to implement filters, sliding windows and Fourier analysis, operating in real time. Participants rated software usability at 70.2 out of 100 and the ease of use when implementing several signal processing applications was rated at just over 4.4 out of 5. Participants showed their intention of using this software because it was percieved as useful and very easy to use. The performances of the library showed that it may be appropriate for implementing small biomedical real-time applications or for human movement monitoring, even in a simple open-source hardware device like Arduino Genuino. The general perception about this library is that it is easy to use and intuitive
