This article seeks to provide evidence of the impact Crown patrimonialist action had on the incomes and rights on the Valencian lords. The example of the Lineage of Medinaceli highlights the significant decline in income experienced as a consequence of the 1055 of private rights in favour of Patrimonio Real. The suppression of the monopolistic character of shops, bakeries, and mills prevented the lords from reaching advantageous prices regarding lease contracts. The patrimonial policy of the Crown affected not only the lords' interests, but 0 150 those of many town councils and assorted landowners, all of whom had managed to appropriate important royalties. This is the reason why, during the reign of Ferdinand VII, a complex conflict with multiple actors will develop.

This paper studies the visual representation of local nature in the sacred art developed during the colonial period of Brazilian history. In this period, between the XVIth and the XVIIIth centuries, the visual arts in the country evolved in the context of the Baroque introduced by Catholic missionaries. It was in the decoration of the churches in which the first representations of aspects of local nature, mostly the tropical fruits, appeared in Brazilian visual arts, producing new combinations together with the traditional European phytomorphic ornamentation of acanthus leaves and grapes. This research draws upon texts written by travellers and missionaries during the period to demonstrate how the Europeans interpreted and represented tropical nature and used these representations as part of the Catholic preaching strategy by means of moral and religious allegorization of the New World nature

This PhD Thesis aims to analyze the development of the noble Manors in the Valencian Country and their influence over one of the main noble Houses of the Spanish monarchy in the Old Regime. This research has as a purpose to improve our knowledge about the processes of social transformation that took place during the 18th and 19th centuries. However, this analysis of the Valencian Manors cannot be understood isolated and decontextualized from the noble Houses they belonged to. Rather the contrary, it is meant to clarify the dialectical relationship between house and the noble Manors, valuing, among other reasons, the importance of the Valencian income over the house set, the influence that the administrative reforms of the ducal House had over these territories and how their inhabitants acted. Besides, this thesis tries to show up to what extent these Valencian dominions contributed in restructuring the finances of the House of Medinaceli in the second third of the 19th century

Advances in the Ultrasound Characterization Of Dry-Cured Meat Products

[EN] In this work, the feasibility of using non-contact ultrasonic techniques (air-coupled and scanning acoustic microscopy, SAM) for characterizing different dry-cured meat products was assessed. Air-coupled ultrasonic measurements were performed on vacuum packaged sliced dry-cured ham, and compared with contact measurements. The average ultrasonic velocity in dry-cured ham was 1846 +/- 49 m/s and 1842 +/- 42 m/s for air-coupled and contact measurements, respectively. The deviation (1% relative error) between both techniques was related to the influence of the heterogeneous structure and composition of dry-cured ham and the transducer focusing. The SAM was used to characterize dry-cured ham and chorizo samples. B-scan images for dry-cured ham and chorizo showed two dominant reflections from the sample, linked to reflections in the lean and fatty tissues. The results indicate that contact ultrasonic measurements could be replaced by the air-coupled technique, reducing the measuring time and the material handling. On the other hand, SAM technique allows the microscopic characterization of dry-cured meat products. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
