    Inflammatory response induced by Helicobacter pylori infection in lung

    Helicobacter pylori is a microorganism that in the last years has been associated with extragastric disorders such as respiratory diseases, however, its impact on lung is partially understood. The aim of this work was to study infection impact of H. pylori on the inflammatory markers expression at the pulmonary level using an animal model. Infection was performed by BALB/c wild type (WT) mice orotracheal instillation with 20 μl of 1 × 108 H. pylori reference strain suspension once per day throughout 3 days. Inflammatory response was evaluated at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days post infection. Lung was aseptically removed and pulmonary edema index values showed a significant change at 30 days of infection. Hematoxylin-Eosin (H-E) stain allowed to visualizing H. pylori presence in lung samples at 3 days of infection near the phagocytic cells or in the alveoli lumen. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was used for inflammatory response evaluation. Lactate dehydrogenase values showed a gradual increase in infected animals along infection time. Protein concentrations in mg/ml from BAL increased significantly at 7 days in infected animals. Macrophages viability obtained from BAL, decreased at the first moment of infection, maintaining constant values along contamination time. Results obtained demonstrate an inflammatory response in lung after orotracheal H. pylori infection and suggest that the pathogenic mechanism is strongly evidenced by tissue damage, endothelial dysfunction inflammatory mediators and markers expression at the pulmonary level.Fil: Arismendi Sosa, Andrea Celeste.     Barium stars, galactic populations and evolution

    In this paper HIPPARCOS astrometric and kinematical data together with radial velocities from other sources are used to calibrate both luminosity and kinematics parameters of Ba stars and to classify them. We confirm the results of our previous paper (where we used data from the HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue), and show that Ba stars are an inhomogeneous group. Five distinct classes have been found i.e. some halo stars and four groups belonging to disk population: roughly super-giants, two groups of giants (one on the giant branch, the other at the clump location) and dwarfs, with a few subgiants mixed with them. The confirmed or suspected duplicity, the variability and the range of known orbital periods found in each group give coherent results supporting the scenario for Ba stars that are not too highly massive binary stars in any evolutionary stages but that all were previously enriched with Ba from a more evolved companion. The presence in the sample of a certain number of ``false'' Ba stars is confirmed. The estimates of age and mass are compatible with models for stars with a strong Ba anomaly. The mild Ba stars with an estimated mass higher than 3Msun_ may be either stars Ba enriched by themselves or ``true'' Ba stars, which imposes new constraints on models

    Sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) ‘Sweetheart’ were harvested at different production regions from Portugal (Cova da Beira and Portalegre) and Spain (Valle de Jerte). Cherries were harvested at their commercial maturation according to the empirical knowledge of external color corresponding to good quality. Fruits were stored and evaluated in order to study their quality on the harvest day and during a period of 21 days, at cold storage (1 ºC, 95% RH). The sweet cherry ‘Sweetheart’ is a well-known variety and a highly appreciated one but fruits present a short shelf life. On the other hand the effect of different “terroir” on cherry characteristics should be known and clarified. Fruits from day 0, considered without storage, were kept at 20ºC and analyzed. Every weak, 3 replicas were randomly picked up and 10 fruits from each one were submitted to several analyses after fruit temperature stabilized at 20ºC. Several quality parameters were evaluated: external colour (L*, a*, b*), texture, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA) and the ratio between soluble solid contents (SSC) and tritratable acidity (TA). Fruits from different orchards and locations were significantly different according to these parameters. Fruits from Cova da Beira were less firm comparing with other two regions, Valle de Jerte and Portalegre, which may indicate a higher maturation rate at harvest in those fruits. This is in accordance with SSC/titratable acidity rate suggesting a late harvest in Cova da Beira comparing with other two orchards, however fruits from Cova da Beira exhibit a poor color at harvest. These results clearly showed a lower correlation between SSC and firmness considering fruits origin

    Natural and sail-displaced doubly-symmetric Lagrange point orbits for polar coverage

    This paper proposes the use of doubly-symmetric, eight-shaped orbits in the circular restricted three-body problem for continuous coverage of the high-latitude regions of the Earth. These orbits, for a range of amplitudes, spend a large fraction of their period above either pole of the Earth. It is shown that they complement Sun-synchronous polar and highly eccentric Molniya orbits, and present a possible alternative to low thrust pole-sitter orbits. Both natural and solar-sail displaced orbits are considered. Continuation methods are described and used to generate families of these orbits. Starting from ballistic orbits, other families are created either by increasing the sail lightness number, varying the period or changing the sail attitude. Some representative orbits are then chosen to demonstrate the visibility of high-latitude regions throughout the year. A stability analysis is also performed, revealing that the orbits are unstable: it is found that for particular orbits, a solar sail can reduce their instability. A preliminary design of a linear quadratic regulator is presented as a solution to stabilize the system by using the solar sail only. Finally, invariant manifolds are exploited to identify orbits that present the opportunity of a ballistic transfer directly from low Earth orbit

    It has been reported previously that activation of vascular endothelium by outer membrane proteins of the spirochetes Borrelia sp. and Treponema sp. resulted in enhanced expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules. To investigate the role of leptospiral proteins in this process, a predicted lipoprotein encoded by the gene LIC10365 was selected, which belongs to a paralogous family that presents a domain of unknown function, DUF1565. The LIC10365 gene was cloned and the protein expressed in Escherichia coli C43 (DE3) strain using the vector pAE. The recombinant protein tagged with N-terminal hexahistidine was purified by metal-charged chromatography and was used to assess its ability to activate cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The rLIC10365 activated endothelium in such a manner that E-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) became upregulated in a dose-dependent fashion. The LIC10365-encoded protein was identified in vivo in the renal tubules of animal during experimental infection with Leptospira interrogans. Collectively, these results implicate the LIC10365-coding protein of L. interrogans as a potential effector molecule in the promotion of a host inflammatory response. This is the first report of a leptospiral protein capable of up-regulating the expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and E-selectin.Instituto de Biotecnologia y Biologia Molecula

    Community collective efficacy is associated with reduced physical intimate partner violence (IPV) incidence in the rural province of Mpumalanga, South Africa: Findings from HPTN 068

    Background Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a human rights violation and is associated with a variety of adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Collective efficacy, defined as mutual trust among community members and willingness to intervene on the behalf of the common good, has been associated with reduced neighbourhood violence. Limited research has explored whether community collective efficacy is associated with reduced incidence of IPV. This is of particular interest among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa, where the burden of HIV is greatest and IPV is common. Methods We collected longitudinal data among 2533 AGYW (ages 13-20) enrolled in the HPTN 068 cohort in Mpumalanga province, South Africa between 2011 and 2016. We included participants from 26 villages where community surveys were collected during the HPTN 068 study. Collective efficacy was measured at the village level via two population-based cross-sectional surveys in 2012 and 2014. Multivariable Poisson generalised estimating equation regression models estimated the relative risk ratio (RR) between village collective efficacy scores and subsequent physical IPV 12 month incidence, adjusting for village-level clustering and covariates. Results Thirty-eight per cent of the cohort (n=950) reported at least one episode of recent physical IPV during follow-up. For every SD higher level of collective efficacy, there was a 6% lower level of physical IPV incidence (adjusted RR: 0.94;95% CI 0.89 to 0.98) among AGYW after adjusting for covariates. Conclusions Community-level interventions that foster the development of collective efficacy may reduce IPV among AGYW

    Fitting the integrated Spectral Energy Distributions of Galaxies

    Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies is an almost universally used technique that has matured significantly in the last decade. Model predictions and fitting procedures have improved significantly over this time, attempting to keep up with the vastly increased volume and quality of available data. We review here the field of SED fitting, describing the modelling of ultraviolet to infrared galaxy SEDs, the creation of multiwavelength data sets, and the methods used to fit model SEDs to observed galaxy data sets. We touch upon the achievements and challenges in the major ingredients of SED fitting, with a special emphasis on describing the interplay between the quality of the available data, the quality of the available models, and the best fitting technique to use in order to obtain a realistic measurement as well as realistic uncertainties. We conclude that SED fitting can be used effectively to derive a range of physical properties of galaxies, such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and metallicities, with care taken not to over-interpret the available data. Yet there still exist many issues such as estimating the age of the oldest stars in a galaxy, finer details ofdust properties and dust-star geometry, and the influences of poorly understood, luminous stellar types and phases. The challenge for the coming years will be to improve both the models and the observational data sets to resolve these uncertainties. The present review will be made available on an interactive, moderated web page (sedfitting.org), where the community can access and change the text.
