Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is receiving increased attention, especially in the fields of anxiety and eating disorders. This study is the first trial examining the utility of VRET from the perspective of OCD patients. Four OCD women assessed the sense of presence, emotional engagement, and reality judgment, and the anxiety and disgust levels they experimented in four scenarios, called the Contaminated Virtual Environment (COVE), in which they had to perform several activities. The COVE scenarios were presented on a Full HD 46” TV connected to a laptop and to a Kinect device. Results indicate that the COVE scenarios generated a good sense of presence. The anxiety and disgust levels increased as the virtual contamination increased, and the anxiety produced was related to the emotional engagement and sense of presence.

Helping Naive Users to Reuse Ontology Design Patterns

    Get PDF
The decisive launching of the Semantic Web depends on two key factors: the design of sound methodologies for guiding users in the reuse of available knowledge resources that speed up the ontology development, and the suitability of those methodologies for an average user. In this paper we propose a method for the reuse of ontology design patterns aimed at users with little expertise in ontology development, i.e. naive users. The method workflow is explained in the light of some examples of reuse of logical ontology design patterns: the SubClassOf relation, Exhaustive Classes and Disjoint Classes patterns

Subcellular forms and biochemical events triggered in human cells by HCV polyprotein expression from a viral vector

To identify the subcellular forms and biochemical events induced in human cells after HCV polyprotein expression, we have used a robust cell culture system based on vaccinia virus (VACV) that efficiently expresses in infected cells the structural and nonstructural proteins of HCV from genotype 1b (VT7-HCV7.9). As determined by confocal microscopy, HCV proteins expressed from VT7-HCV7.9 localize largely in a globular-like distribution pattern in the cytoplasm, with some proteins co-localizing with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria. As examined by electron microscopy, HCV proteins induced formation of large electron-dense cytoplasmic structures derived from the ER and containing HCV proteins. In the course of HCV protein production, there is disruption of the Golgi apparatus, loss of spatial organization of the ER, appearance of some "virus-like" structures and swelling of mitochondria. Biochemical analysis demonstrate that HCV proteins bring about the activation of initiator and effector caspases followed by severe apoptosis and mitochondria dysfunction, hallmarks of HCV cell injury. Microarray analysis revealed that HCV polyprotein expression modulated transcription of genes associated with lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and cellular proliferation. Our findings demonstrate the uniqueness of the VT7-HCV7.9 system to characterize morphological and biochemical events related to HCV pathogenesis

Using Linguistic Patterns to Enhance Ontology Development

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe how linguistic patterns can contribute to ontology development by enabling an easier reuse of some ontological resources. In particular, our research focuses on the reuse of ontology design patterns and ontology statements by relying on linguistic constructs at different stages of the reuse process. With this aim, we propose the employment of lexico-syntactic patterns with two objectives: 1) the reuse of ontology design patterns, and 2) the validation of ontology statements for their subsequent reuse in the ontology development. To illustrate the proposed approaches, we will present some examples of lexico-syntactic patterns and their employment in the reuse of ontology design patterns and in the validation of ontology statements

Natural Language-based Approach for Helping in the Reuse of Ontology Design Patterns

    Get PDF
Experiments in the reuse of Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) have revealed that users with different levels of expertise in ontology modelling face difficulties when reusing ODPs. With the aim of tackling this problem we propose a method and a tool for supporting a semi-automatic reuse of ODPs that takes as input formulations in natural language (NL) of the domain aspect to be modelled, and obtains as output a set of ODPs for solving the initial ontological needs. The correspondence between ODPs and NL formulations is done through Lexico-Syntactic Patterns, linguistic constructs that convey the semantic relations present in ODPs, and which constitute the main contribution of this paper. The main benefit of the proposed approach is the use of non-restricted NL formulations in various languages for obtaining ODPs. The use of full NL poses challenges in the disambiguation of linguistic expressions that we expect to solve with user interaction, among other strategies
