OBJECTIVES: Increased arterial stiffness is an important determinant of the risk of cardiovascular disease. Lipid profile impairment, especially hypercholesterolemia, is associated with stiffer blood vessels. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine which of the five circulating lipid components (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides) is the best predictor of increased arterial stiffness in an urban Brazilian population. METHODS: A random sample of 1,662 individuals from the general population of Vitoria, Brazil (25-64 years), was selected, and lipid components were measured using standard methods. Pulse wave velocity was measured using a non-invasive automatic device, and increased arterial stiffness was defined as a pulse wave velocity ≥10 m/s. RESULTS: In men, only total cholesterol (OR=1.59; CI=1.02 to 2.48, p=0.04) was associated with the risk of increased arterial stiffness. In women, HDL-C (OR=1.99; CI=1.18 to 3.35, p=0.01) and non-HDL-C (OR=1.61; CI=1.01 to 2.56, p=0.04) were good predictors of the risk of increased arterial stiffness. However, these associations were only found in postmenopausal women (OR=2.06; CI=1.00 to 4.26, p=0.05 for HDL-C and OR=1.83; CI=1.01 to 3.33, p=0.04 for non-HDL-C). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that both HDL-C and non-HDL-C are good predictors of the risk of increased arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women in an urban Brazilian population and may be useful tools for assessing the risk of arterial stiffness

Soybean Yield Responses to Micronutrient Fertilizers

The availability of commercial products containing micronutrients for the management of crops has increased in recent years, but there are experimental results showing great variability in response to their application. A literature review was made in 28 scientific articles about the answers in the soybean yield in Brazilian agriculture due to the application of fertilizer containing micronutrients. Then, the aim of this chapter is to approach the efficiency of sources, doses, application methods, time, and yield results achieved in recent years by Brazilian research with the application of micronutrients in soybean. Adequate doses and sources of micronutrient increase Brazilian soybean yield, especially in that soil with low micronutrient content. High yields can be obtained in soils that have micronutrient levels considered adequate or high without their application. To right choice of micronutrients fertilizers, the farmer must know about solubility and other characteristics, including easiness to handling and applying and price. In general, the application method does not result in differences in soybean productivity. Thus, when applying micronutrients in the soil, topdressing or seed furrow, and leaf, and seed treatment, the most important aspects seem to be the time and dose to provide the nutrients in adequate amounts the plant requires

The molar-incisor permineralização (MIH) is a qualitative enamel developing abnormality involving the occlusal and/or incisal third of one or more molars or permanent incisors, caused by systemic factors. Several systemic disorders and environmental factors, such as respiratory diseases, have been reported as probable causes of MIH. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate whether respiratory diseases and MIH are associated. The searches were carried out in electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, LILACS, OpenGrey, and Google Scholar. The acronym PECO was used, in which the P (population) was humans in permanent dentition stage; (E-exposure) molar-incisor hypomineralization; (C-comparison) reference population and (O - outcome) respiratory diseases. After the search retrieval, the duplicates were removed, and the articles were evaluated by title and abstract; then, the papers were read and thoroughly assessed. After selection, the risk of bias assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for observational studies. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to assess the level of evidence. Three thousand six hundred and sixty six were found through the searches. After exclusion by duplicates, title, abstract, and full-reading, 13 articles remained. The articles included in this review evaluated the association of MIH with asthma, tonsilitis, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Most reports showed a low risk of bias. When exploring through GRADE, a very low level of evidence was found. We observed that the included studies showed that children with MIH had more respiratory diseases than the group that did not have MIH.Systematic review registrationhttps://osf.io/un76d

The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of crossbred calves fed cheese whey, in association with colostrum. Twenty‑four Holstein x Zebu calves, distributed in a completely randomized block design, with three treatments and eight replicates, were used. The treatments consisted of: whole milk; 50% whole milk + 50% cheese whey; and 30% colostrum + 70% cheese whey. The development of calves was evaluated until 60 days of age by weekly weighing and body measurements. To estimate consumption, daily measurements of solid diet consumption were done by the supply/spare method. Economic performance was evaluated by calculating indicators of costs and revenues, and measurements of economic outcomes. There was no influence of liquid diet on dry matter intake and on average body measurements of calves. Significant differences were found in animal weight gain in the second and in the fourth weeks of life. The diet containing colostrum showed the highest additional profit when compared to the control treatment. The association of cheese whey and colostrum is the most economically advantageous option in the liquid diet of crossbred calves, since the substitution of 100% of the milk by these byproducts did not harm the performance of animals.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de bezerros mestiços, aleitados com soro de queijo em associação ao colostro.

The spacialization of climatic variables, especially the precipitation, needs constant studies. The precipitation is one of the more important meteorological variables for the climatic studies of the several areas of Brazil, mainly, due to the consequences, in the economical and social sections, occurred in excess or shortage periods. In this sense, the present research looked for to perceive the rainfall of the Territory of Identity called Portal do sertão, in Bahia, because from 17 municipal districts that compose this area, only ten of them have climatological data. The methodological base of the work concentrated on the use and evaluation of some of the principal interpolation methods (inverse considered of the distance; kriging; spline and triangulation with linear interpolation). The interpolation is constituted in a method of esteeming a parameter for which available information doesn't exist, being considered that the neighbor points in the space tend to have more similar values than distant points. The most appropriate result was obtained by the kriging, followed for the minimum and inverse curvature considered of the distance. Being considered that the interpolation just supplies an estimate of a value based on other known values is believed that the distribution of the stations and the low density of data were responsible for the bad quality of the results obtained by most of the analyzed methods. The reached results confirm the degree of relevance of this study, especially in the ambit of the measurement of rainfall data.Pages: 4295-430

Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether systemic, chronic, and low-dose exposure to MeHg can change the alveolar bone microstructure of rats. Adult Wistar rats (n = 30) were exposed to 0.04 mg/kg/day of MeHg or vehicle through intragastric gavage. The animals were euthanized after 60 days, and blood samples were collected for trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and comet assays. The mandible of each animal was collected and separated into hemimandibles that were used to determine the total Hg level in the bone and to analyze microstructural damage and alveolar bone loss in terms of trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone volume fraction (BV/TV), and exposed root area of the second molars. MeHg exposure triggered oxidative stress in blood represented by lower levels of GSH and TEAC and the increase in LPO and DNA damage of the blood cells. High total Hg levels were found in the alveolar bone, and the microstructural analyses showed a reduction in Tb.N, Tb.Th, and BV/TV, which resulted in an increase in the exposed root area and a decrease in bone height. Long-term MeHg exposure promotes a systemic redox imbalance associated with microstructural changes and alveolar bone loss and may indicate a potential risk indicator for periodontal diseases
