Recycling lagoon water for manure flushing systems (1981)

    Get PDF
Flushing systems for manure collection and transport from animal confinement buildings have the advantages of improved building environment and reduced labor. Flush water comes from either the domestic water supply or as recycled water from the lagoon receiving the wastes. The advantages of using recycled water are a decreased demand on the domestic water supply and less hydraulic or 'fresh water' loading on the lagoon.New 8/81/15M

Gases and odors from swine wastes (1980)

Raising hogs in confinement has caused concern for air quality inside and outside of buildings. Complaints and lawsuits by neighbors and urban dwellers have turned attention toward odors and methods of controlling them. Other concerns for air quality are for those who work in the buildings, and for the hogs. High levels of noxious gases in confinement buildings have caused persons to experience irritation in breathing. Also, dead hogs have been reported when noxious gas levels became critically high.Reprinted 6/80/8M

Crystallization in lagoon effluent recycle lines (2003)

Hydraulic collection and transport is a preferred method of handling livestock manure for many producers. Hydraulic methods tend to reduce labor and equipment requirements and take advantage of gravity in the movement of manure. However, most manure, as excreted by the animal, is too thick (solids content is too high) to move hydraulically. Therefore, a typical practice is to use recycled effluent from the manure lagoon to dilute manure so that it can be collected and transported hydraulically to the lagoon.New 04/03/3.5

"Lagoons are an important part of many Missouri livestock waste management systems. In addition to providing relatively low-cost storage for wastes, lagoons biologically degrade and liquify manure for pumping and distribution onto pasture or crop land. Lagoons definitely should not be considered final disposal impoundments for animal wastes."--First page.Charles Fulhage (Department of Agricultural Engineering College of Agriculture)New 12/81/15

    Manure management in hoop structures

Nutrients and Bacterial WasteENVIRONMENTAL QUALITYMU GuidePUBLISHED BY MU EXTENSION, UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-COLUMBIACharles Fulhage, Agricultural Engineering Extension"Hoop structures for raising swine offer an alternative to managing manure in the traditional liquid form (Figures 1 and 2). Some producers are willing to provide the increased labor and management required for a hoop structure so that manure can be handled as a solid. Advantages of handling manure as a solid include the following: bedding availability on the farm, less odor than with liquid manure systems, less risk of runoff or spills than with liquid manure systems. Disadvantages of handling manure as a solid include the following: large amounts of bedding required, labor required to handle bedding and manure, bedding costs, if bedding must be purchased." -- page 1New 5/03/3.5M; Reviewed November 201
