    A direct element resequencing procedure

    Element by element frontal solution algorithms are utilized in many of the existing finite element codes. The overall computational efficiency of this type of procedure is directly related to the element data input sequence. Thus, it is important to have a pre-processor which will resequence these data so as to reduce the element wavefronts to be encountered in the solution algorithm. A direct element resequencing algorithm is detailed for reducing element wavefronts. It also generates computational by products that can be utilized in pre-front calculations and in various post-processors. Sample problems are presented and compared with other algorithms

    Tear film thickness variations and the role of the tear meniscus

    A mathematical model is developed to investigate the two-dimensional variations in the thickness of tear fluid deposited on the eye surface during a blink. Such variations can become greatly enhanced as the tears evaporate during the interblink period.\ud The four mechanisms considered are: i) the deposition of the tear film from the upper eyelid meniscus, ii) the flow of tear fluid from under the eyelid as it is retracted and from the lacrimal gland, iii) the flow of tear fluid around the eye within the meniscus and iv) the drainage of tear fluid into the canaliculi through the inferior and superior puncta.\ud There are two main insights from the modelling. First is that the amount of fluid within the tear meniscus is much greater than previously employed in models and this significantly changes the predicted distribution of tears. Secondly the uniformity of the tear film for a single blink is: i) primarily dictated by the storage in the meniscus, ii) quite sensitive to the speed of the blink and the ratio of the viscosity to the surface tension iii) less sensitive to the precise puncta behaviour, the flow under the eyelids or the specific distribution of fluid along the meniscus at the start of the blink. The modelling briefly examines the flow into the puncta which interact strongly with the meniscus and acts to control the meniscus volume. In addition it considers flow from the lacrimal glands which appears to occurs continue even during the interblink period when the eyelids are stationary

    Reading, writing and apprenticeships: developing an authentic reading and assessment strategy for graduate apprenticeships.

    The recent launch of graduate apprenticeships in Scotland requires participating universities to collaborate closely with employers to design and develop innovative curricula to enable apprentices to acquire new knowledge and develop relevant skills both in a traditional university learning and teaching setting as well as in the workplace. This paper argues that the additional context of learning situated in the workplace provides a particular impetus to consider and reflect the requirement and deployment of authentic reading strategies and authentic assessment regimes as essential design elements in these programmes. We present a discussion of the approach we are adopting to designing curricula and preparing learning and assessment resources for graduate apprenticeships in Business Management and Business Management: Financial Services. We focus here specifically on our plans for helping apprentices on these programmes to navigate the plethora of information resources available to them and develop effective reading strategies and information literacy skills in both academic and professional contexts. We indicate how the enhancement of these skills forms an important precursor to tackling the authentic assessments designed for apprentices to evidence their professional and academic learning during their apprenticeships. Our planning and design activity draws first on aspects of our recent research into reading skills and strategies among professionals and business students, as well as on our established track record of delivering a variety of work-based learning programmes. It is envisaged that findings and lessons learned from our work will help guide and inform other institutions across the UK as they establish curricula for graduate or degree apprenticeships

    Making Non-Career Jobs Attractive to Younger Workers

    As most hospitality industry managers in the U.S. are already aware, there is a growing and persistent shortage of labor available for service-sector, non-career jobs, the very jobs so vital to the industry. In most cases, recruitment efforts for these jobs are targeted toward younger workers, those under age 25. The authors explore issues regarding the attractiveness of non-career jobs in the eyes of young persons and suggest that, in addition to factors related to the job itself (pay, hours, type of work), the type of procedures used by employers to make selection decisions are equally influential. Recommendations are made concerning how hospitality employers with non-career positions to fill can maximize the chances of successfully staffing their organizations

    Evaluating Management Actions for Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, in Mississippi with an Age-Structured Projection Model

    Spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, is an important recreational fishery in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is the most sought after gamefish in coastal Mississippi. The management of C. nebulosus is state-specific, and unlike other similarly managed species, data on both population structure and movement support the existence of local sub-stocks. It is important for each state to clearly examine its own sub-stock in the context of its own state fishery in order to properly manage for local sustainability. We used an age-structured assessment model to examine the status (1993–2005) of the Mississippi C. nebulosus population and to project forward several probable management actions (i.e., length limits) while also accounting for uncertainty in both fishing mortality and annual recruitment. Model results suggest annual fishing mortality for Mississippi C. nebulosus is close to Fmsy, but that spawning stock biomass (SSB) is not below SSBmsy. This suggests the sub-stock is currently stable, but with high fishing pressure and a high dependence on annual recruitment to the fishery. Projections suggest that when uncertainty in angler effort and annual recruitment are included in the analysis, more conservative management actions are warranted in order to achieve both higher fishery yield and stable SSB

    Contralateral fatigue during severe-intensity single-leg exercise: influence of acute acetaminophen ingestion

    Exhaustive single-leg exercise has been suggested to reduce time to task failure (Tlim) during subsequent exercise in the contralateral leg by exacerbating central fatigue development. We investigated the influence of acetaminophen (ACT), an analgesic that may blunt central fatigue development, on Tlim during single-leg exercise completed with and without prior fatiguing exercise of the contralateral leg. Fourteen recreationally active men performed single-leg severe-intensity knee-extensor exercise to Tlim on the left (Leg1) and right (Leg2) legs without prior contralateral fatigue and on Leg2 immediately following Leg1 (Leg2-CONTRA). The tests were completed following ingestion of 1-g ACT or maltodextrin [placebo (PL)] capsules. Intramuscular phosphorus-containing metabolites and substrates and muscle activation were assessed using 31P-MRS and electromyography, respectively. Tlim was not different between Leg1ACT and Leg1PL conditions (402 ± 101 vs. 390 ± 106 s, P = 0.11). There was also no difference in Tlim between Leg2ACT-CONTRA and Leg2PL-CONTRA (324 ± 85 vs. 311 ± 92 s, P = 0.10), but Tlim was shorter in Leg2ACT-CONTRA and Leg2PL-CONTRA than in Leg2CON (385 ± 104 s, both P 0.05). These findings suggest that levels of metabolic perturbation and muscle activation at Tlim are not different during single-leg severe-intensity knee-extensor exercise completed with or without prior fatiguing exercise of the contralateral leg. Despite contralateral fatigue, ACT ingestion did not alter neuromuscular responses, muscle metabolites, or exercise performance.This article is freely available via Open Access.     Radar water-level measurement for open channels

The theme of the conference was "Water district management and governance."Includes bibliographical references.The U.S. Geological Survey is investigating the performance of radars used for water-level measurement. This paper presents data collected using the Design Analysis Associates H-360 radar sensor in the laboratory and in the field. (The use of firm, trade, and brand names in this report is for identification purposes only and does not constitute endorsement by the U.S. Geological Survey.) Radar water-level measurements at field sites were compared either to pressure sensor or float measurements by using simple statistical comparisons and frequency analysis with Fourier transforms of the data. Laboratory testing checked the performance of the radar sensor over the operating temperature range. Field data comparison and laboratory temperature testing indicate that the unit has an accuracy of about 0.03 feet except for windy conditions, when errors of -0.30 feet can occur.Sponsored by USCID; co-sponsored by Association of California Water Agencies and International Network for Participatory Irrigation Management

    The effect of breakfast versus no breakfast on brain activity in adolescents when performing cognitive tasks, as assessed by fMRI

The final version is available from Maney Publishing via the DOI in this record.OBJECTIVES: The study examined the feasibility of utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with a group of adolescent boys and girls to assess modifications in cognitive function, dependent upon the nutritional state of the participants. METHODS: Twenty children aged 12-14 years completed two cognitive trials, in a randomized counterbalanced order, one under fasting condition, one after consuming breakfast, during which continuous fMRI data were acquired. RESULTS: Although no statistically significant (P > 0.05) improvement in task performance was determined, significantly higher activation was recorded in the frontal, premotor, and primary visual cortex areas in the breakfast trial relative to the fasting condition. DISCUSSION: Such a finding may have important implications in the examination of the role of diet, and specifically breakfast, in determining children's performance within the school environment
