Intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in nickel: An GGA+U study
The electronic structure and intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity of nickel
have been calculated based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus
on-site Coulomb interaction (GGA+U) scheme. It is found that the intrinsic
anomalous Hall conductivity () obtained from the GGA+U
calculations with eV and eV, is in nearly perfect agreement
with that measured recently at low temperatures while, in contrast, the
from the GGA calculations is about 100% larger than the
measured one. This indicates that, as for the other spin-orbit interaction
(SOI)-induced phenomena in 3 itinerant magnets such as the orbital magnetic
magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy, the on-site electron-electron
correlation, though moderate only, should be taken into account properly in
order to get the correct anomalous Hall conductivity. The intrinsic
and the number of valence electrons () have also been
calculated as a function of the Fermi energy (). A sign change is
predicted at eV (), and this explain qualitatively
why the theoretical and experimental values for Fe and Co are
positive. It is also predicted that fcc NiCo(Fe,Cu) alloys with
being small, would also have the negative with the
magnitude being in the range of cm. The most
pronounced effect of including the on-site Coulomb interaction is that all the
-dominant bands are lowered in energy relative to the by about 0.3 eV,
and consequently, the small minority spin X hole pocket disappears. The
presence of the small X hole pocket in the GGA calculations is attributed
to be responsible for the large discrepancy in the between

Charged Higgs boson contribution to scattering from low to ultrahigh energy in Higgs triplet model
We study the scattering from low to ultrahigh energy in the
framework of Higgs Triplet Model (HTM). We add the contribution of charged
Higgs boson exchange to the total cross section of the scattering. We obtain
the upper bound in this
process from low energy experiment. We show that by using the upper bound
obtained, the charged Higgs contribution can give enhancements to the total
cross section with respect to the SM prediction up to 5.16% at
eV and maximum at and would help to determine the
feasibility experiments to discriminate between SM and HTM at current available

Methods and apparatus for constructing and implementing a universal extension module for processing objects in a database
Methods and apparatus for providing a multi-tier object-relational database architecture are disclosed. In one illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a multi-tier database architecture comprises an object-relational database engine as a top tier, one or more domain-specific extension modules as a bottom tier, and one or more universal extension modules as a middle tier. The individual extension modules of the bottom tier operationally connect with the one or more universal extension modules which, themselves, operationally connect with the database engine. The domain-specific extension modules preferably provide such functions as search, index, and retrieval services of images, video, audio, time series, web pages, text, XML, spatial data, etc. The domain-specific extension modules may include one or more IBM DB2 extenders, Oracle data cartridges and/or Informix datablades, although other domain-specific extension modules may be used
Period, birth cohort and prevalence of dementia in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan: a meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: There have been dramatic societal changes in East Asia over the last hundred years. Several of the established risk factors could have important period and cohort effects. This study explores temporal variation of dementia prevalence in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan taking study methods into account. METHODS: Seventy prevalence studies of dementia in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were identified from 1980 to 2012. Five period groups (before 1990, 1990 ~ 1994, 1995 ~ 1999, 2000 ~ 2004 and 2005 ~ 2012) and five birth cohort groups (1895 ~ 1909, 1910 ~ 1919, 1920 ~ 1929, 1930 ~ 1939 and 1940 ~ 1950) were categorised using the year of investigation and 5-year age groups. Pooled prevalence by age, period and birth cohort groups was estimated through meta-regression model and meta-analysis taking diagnostic criteria and age structure into account. RESULTS: After adjusting for diagnostic criteria, the study age range and age structure, the prevalence of dementia in the older population aged 60 years and over fluctuated across periods but not reaching significance and were estimated as 1.8%, 2.5%, 2.1%, 2.4% and 3.1% for the five periods from pre-1990 to 2005 ~ 2012. A potential increasing pattern from less to more recent birth cohort groups was found in the major studies using older diagnostic criteria with wider differences in the age groups over 70 years. CONCLUSIONS: This study found no significant variation across periods but suggested a potential cohort effect. The influence of societal changes might moderate early life experiences across different generations with substantial impact on mental health in older age.There is no specific funding contributing to this study. Conoscopic patterns in photonic band gap of cholesteric liquid crystal cells with twist defects
We theoretically investigate into the effects of the incidence angles in
light transmission of cholesteric liquid crystal two-layer sandwich structures
with twist defects created by rotation of the one layer about the helical
axis.The conoscopic images and polarization resolved patterns are obtained for
thick layers by computing the intensity and the polarization parameters as a
function of the incidence angles.In addition to the defect angle induced
rotation of the pictures as a whole, the rings of defect mode resonances are
found to shrink to the origin and disappear as the defect twist angle varies

LLL-3 inhibits STAT3 activity, suppresses glioblastoma cell growth and prolongs survival in a mouse glioblastoma model
Persistent activation of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signalling has been linked to oncogenesis and the development of chemotherapy resistance in glioblastoma and other cancers. Inhibition of the STAT3 pathway thus represents an attractive therapeutic approach for cancer. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of a small molecule compound known as LLL-3, which is a structural analogue of the earlier reported STAT3 inhibitor, STA-21, on the cell viability of human glioblastoma cells, U87, U373, and U251 expressing constitutively activated STAT3. We also investigated the inhibitory effects of LLL-3 on U87 glioblastoma cell growth in a mouse tumour model as well as the impact it had on the survival time of the treated mice. We observed that LLL-3 inhibited STAT3-dependent transcriptional and DNA binding activities. LLL-3 also inhibited viability of U87, U373, and U251 glioblastoma cells as well as induced apoptosis of these glioblastoma cell lines as evidenced by increased poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase-3 cleavages. Furthermore, the U87 glioblastoma tumour-bearing mice treated with LLL-3 exhibited prolonged survival relative to vehicle-treated mice (28.5 vs 16 days) and had smaller intracranial tumours and no evidence of contralateral invasion. These results suggest that LLL-3 may be a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of glioblastoma with constitutive STAT3 activation. The treatment and outcomes of early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer: have we made any progress?
The objective of this study is to determine the progress and trends in the treatment and survival of women with early-stage (I–II) epithelial ovarian cancer. Data were obtained from the SEER database between 1988 and 2001. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regressions methods were employed for statistical analyses. Of the 8372 patients, the median age was 57 years (range: 12–99 years). A total of 6152 patients (73.4%) presented with stage I and 2220 (26.5%) with stage II disease. Over the periods 1988–1992, 1993–1997, and 1998–2001, 3-year disease-specific survivals increased from 86.1 to 87.2 to 88.8% (P=0.076). The number of patients that underwent lymphadenectomy has increased significantly from 26.2 to 38.7 to 54.2% over the study period (P<0.001). Of those patients who underwent staging procedures with lymphadenectomy, there was no improvement in survival over the three study periods (from 93.2 to 93.5 to 93.1%; P=0.978). On multivariate analysis, younger age, nonclear cell histology, earlier stage, lower grade, surgery, and lymphadenectomy were significant independent prognostic factors for improved survival. After adjusting for surgical staging with lymphadenectomy, the year of diagnosis was no longer an important prognostic factor. In conclusion, the use of lymphadenectomy during surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer has doubled over the last 14 years. The marginal improvement in survival demonstrated over time is potentially attributed to the increased use of staging procedures with lymphadenectomy
A comparison of risk factors for mortality from heart failure in Asian and non-Asian populations: An overview of individual participant data from 32 prospective cohorts from the Asia-Pacific Region
Background: Most of what is known regarding the epidemiology of mortality from heart failure (HF) comes from studies within Western populations with few data available from the Asia-Pacific region where the burden of heart failure is increasing.Methods: Individual level data from 543694 (85% Asian; 36% female) participants from 32 cohorts in the Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration were included in the analysis. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for mortality from HF were estimated separately for Asians and non-Asians for a quintet of cardiovascular risk factors: systolic blood pressure, diabetes, body mass index, cigarette smoking and total cholesterol. All analyses were stratified by sex and study.Results: During 3,793,229 person years of follow-up there were 614 HF deaths (80% Asian). The positive associations between elevated blood pressure, obesity, and cigarette smoking were consistent for Asians and non-Asians. There was evidence to indicate that diabetes was a weaker risk factor for death from HF for Asians compared with non-Asians: HR 1.26 (95% CI: 0.74-2.13) versus 3.04 (95% CI 1.76-5.25) respectively; p for interaction = 0.022. Additional adjustment for covariates did not materially change the overall associations. There was no good evidence to indicate that total cholesterol was a risk factor for HF mortality in either population.Conclusions: Most traditional cardiovascular risk factors including elevated blood pressure, obesity and cigarette smoking appear to operate similarly to increase the risk of death from HF in Asians and non-Asians populations alike. © 2014 Huxley et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
