Confidence-Building Measures in the Southern Cone

    Get PDF
This article deals with perceptions between countries. It deals with the substance of those perceptions, and ultimately with the creation of trust. Confidence-building measures (CBMs) are practical actions aimed at creating attitudes of cooperativeness. Their purpose is to generate, between former enemies or between nations in competition, the sense that cooperation is possible and is better than confrontation. They also establish the understanding that national interests can still be promoted when acting with another party instead of against it

Del consenso al "tiki-taka": redefiniendo el nacionalismo español desde la prensa escrita a través del fútbol

To what extent football might be useful as an element which articulates national identity? This question constitutes the background on which this paper aims to provide an analysis of the relationship between the Spanish football national team and the idea of nation, within a context characterized by the increasing territorial and identity tension that affects the country, after the outbreak of a profound political, economic and social crisis that begun to give signs of a considerable importance during 2008. In order to fulfill this task, the victories of the Spanish national team in the Euro cup 2008 and in the World cup 2010 –without precedents in the Spanish history of the national team- have been chosen as case studies. Methodologically, the analysis is carried out by studying the frames employed in the coverage of two of the main Spanish newspapers: El País and El Mundo.¿Hasta qué punto el fútbol puede servir de elemento articulador de la identidad nacional?

[EN] The current Master¿s Thesis describes the development of a high throughput, secure and reliable Cloud service for the analysis of building structures. This service relies on the Cloud platform developed at the VENUS-C project, and it is deployed over the Windows Azure Cloud Infrastructure. The simulations in the Cloud are performed by Architrave, an advanced software environment for the design, 3D linear static and dynamic analysis and visualisation of buildings and civil engineering structures. The migration to the Cloud has been carried out by means of the Generic Worker, a Windows Azure Web Role which manages the execution of the remote tasks. The Cloud service employs the CDMI standard for uploading and downloading data. Also, this work includes the development of a GUI client, in charge of managing the remote simulations, sending and receiving the input and output data and informing the user about the status and the progress of the simulations. In order to validate the implementation, a use case consisting on the simulation of a real large building has been executed. The execution results shows the advantages of the Cloud system with respect to the sequential approach, in terms of speed-up, efficiency and the amount of structural solutions analysed per time unitDe La Fuente Aragón, P. Properties of Statistical Depth with Respect to Compact Convex Random Sets: The Tukey Depth

    Get PDF
We study a statistical data depth with respect to compact convex random sets, which is consistent with the multivariate Tukey depth and the Tukey depth for fuzzy sets. In addition, it provides a different perspective to the existing halfspace depth with respect to compact convex random sets. In studying this depth function, we provide a series of properties for the statistical data depth with respect to compact convex random sets. These properties are an adaptation of properties that constitute the axiomatic notions of multivariate, functional, and fuzzy depth-functions and other well-known properties of depth. For L.G.-D.L.F. and A.N.-R., this research was supported by grant MTM2017-86061-C2-2-P funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and “ERDF A way of making Europe”. Statistical depth for fuzzy sets

Statistical depth functions provide a way to order the elements of a space by their centrality in a probability distribution. That has been very successful for generalizing non-parametric order-based statistical procedures from univariate to multivariate and (more recently) to functional spaces. We introduce two general definitions of statistical depth which are adapted to fuzzy data. For that purpose, two concepts of symmetric fuzzy random variables are introduced and studied. Furthermore, a generalization of Tukey's halfspace depth to the fuzzy setting is presented and proved to satisfy the above notions, through a detailed study of its properties.A. Nieto-Reyes and L. Simplicial depths for fuzzy random variables

    Get PDF
The recently defined concept of statistical depth function for fuzzy sets provides a theoretical framework for ordering fuzzy sets with respect to the distribution of a fuzzy random variable. One of the most used and studied statistical depth functions for multivariate data is simplicial depth, based on multivariate simplices. We introduce a notion of pseudosimplices generated by fuzzy sets and propose three generalizations of simplicial depth to fuzzy sets. Their theoretical properties are analyzed and the behavior of the proposals is illustrated through a study of both synthetic and real data. This research was supported by grant PID2022-139237NB-I00 funded by MCIN /AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and "ERDF A way of making Europe". RNA quantification using gold nanoprobes - application to cancer diagnostics

    Get PDF
Molecular nanodiagnostics applied to cancer may provide rapid and sensitive detection of cancer related molecular alterations, which would enable early detection even when those alterations occur only in a small percentage of cells. The use of gold nanoparticles derivatized with thiol modified oligonucleotides (Au-nanoprobes) for the detection of specific nucleic acid targets has been gaining momentum as an alternative to more traditional methodologies. Here, we present an Au-nanoparticles based approach for the molecular recognition and quantification of the BCR-ABL fusion transcript (mRNA), which is responsible for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and to the best of our knowledge it is the first time quantification of a specific mRNA directly in cancer cells is reported. This inexpensive and very easy to perform Au-nanoprobe based method allows quantification of unamplified total human RNA and specific detection of the oncogene transcript. The sensitivity settled by the Au-nanoprobes allows differential gene expression from 10 ng/μl of total RNA and takes less than 30 min to complete after total RNA extraction, minimizing RNA degradation. Also, at later stages, accumulation of malignant mutations may lead to resistance to chemotherapy and consequently poor outcome. Such a method, allowing for fast and direct detection and quantification of the chimeric BCR-ABL mRNA, could speed up diagnostics and, if appropriate, revision of therapy. This assay may constitute a promising tool in early diagnosis of CML and could easily be extended to further target genes with proven involvement in cancer development
