Topological Crystalline Insulators in the SnTe Material Class
Topological crystalline insulators are new states of matter in which the
topological nature of electronic structures arises from crystal symmetries.
Here we predict the first material realization of topological crystalline
insulator in the semiconductor SnTe, by identifying its nonzero topological
index. We predict that as a manifestation of this nontrivial topology, SnTe has
metallic surface states with an even number of Dirac cones on high-symmetry
crystal surfaces such as {001}, {110} and {111}. These surface states form a
new type of high-mobility chiral electron gas, which is robust against disorder
and topologically protected by reflection symmetry of the crystal with respect
to {110} mirror plane. Breaking this mirror symmetry via elastic strain
engineering or applying an in-plane magnetic field can open up a continuously
tunable band gap on the surface, which may lead to wide-ranging applications in
thermoelectrics, infrared detection, and tunable electronics. Closely related
semiconductors PbTe and PbSe also become topological crystalline insulators

Clinical efficacy and safety of buyang huanwu decoction for acute ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials
Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD) is a well-known traditional Chinese herbal prescription for treating stroke-induced disability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BHD for acute ischemic stroke. A systematic literature search was performed in 6 databases until February 2012. Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluate efficacy and safety of BHD for acute ischemic stroke were included. Nineteen RCTs with 1580 individuals were identified. The studies were generally of low methodological quality. Only one of the trial included death or dependency as a primary outcome measure. Only 4 trials reported adverse events. Meta-analysis showed the clinical effective rate of neurological deficit improvement favoring BHD when compared with western conventional medicines (WCM), P < 0.001. There is significant difference in the neurologic deficit score between the BHD treatment group and the WCM control group, P < 0.001. In Conclusion, BHD appears to improve neurological deficit and seems generally safe in patients with acute ischemic stroke. However, the current evidence is insufficient to support a routine use of BHD for acute ischemic stroke due to the poor methodological quality and lack of adequate safety data of the included studies. Wnt2 secreted by tumour fibroblasts promotes tumour progression in oesophageal cancer by activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway
Objectives: Interaction between neoplastic and stromal cells plays an important role in tumour progression. It was recently found that WNT2 was frequently overexpressed in fibroblasts isolated from tumour tissue tumour fibroblasts (TF) compared with fibroblasts from non-tumour tissue normal fibroblasts in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study aimed to investigate the effect of TF-secreted Wnt2 in OSCC development via the tumour - stroma interaction. Methods: Quantitative PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to study the expression pattern of Wnt2 and its effect on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. A Wnt2-secreting system was established in Chinese hamster ovary cells and its conditioned medium was used to study the role of Wnt2 in cell proliferation and invasion. Results: Expression of Wnt2 could only be detected in TF but not in OSCC cancer cell lines. In OSCC tissues, Wnt2 (+) cells were mainly detected in the boundary between stroma and tumour tissue or scattered within tumour tissue. In this study, Wnt2-positive OSCC was defined when five or more Wnt2(+) cells were observed in 2003X microscopy field. Interestingly, Wnt2-positive OSCC (22/51 cases) was significantly associated with lymph node metastases (p=0.001), advanced TNM stage (p=0.001) and disease-specific survival (p<0.0001). Functional study demonstrated that secreted Wnt2 could promote oesophageal cancer cell growth by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway and subsequently upregulated cyclin D1 and c-myc expression. Further study found that Wnt2 could enhance cell motility and invasiveness by inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Conclusions: TF-secreted Wnt2 acts as a growth and invasion-promoting factor through activating the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway in oesophageal cancer cells.published_or_final_versio
Topological crystalline insulator states in Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se
Topological insulators are a novel class of quantum materials in which
time-reversal symmetry, relativistic (spin-orbit) effects and an inverted band
structure result in electronic metallic states on the surfaces of bulk
crystals. These helical states exhibit a Dirac-like energy dispersion across
the bulk bandgap, and they are topologically protected. Recent theoretical
proposals have suggested the existence of topological crystalline insulators, a
novel class of topological insulators in which crystalline symmetry replaces
the role of time-reversal symmetry in topological protection [1,2]. In this
study, we show that the narrow-gap semiconductor Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se is a
topological crystalline insulator for x=0.23. Temperature-dependent
magnetotransport measurements and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy
demonstrate that the material undergoes a temperature-driven topological phase
transition from a trivial insulator to a topological crystalline insulator.
These experimental findings add a new class to the family of topological
insulators. We expect these results to be the beginning of both a considerable
body of additional research on topological crystalline insulators as well as

Scalp acupuncture for acute ischemic stroke: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Scalp acupuncture (SA) is a commonly used therapeutic approach for stroke throughout China and elsewhere in the world. The objective of this study was to assess clinical efficacy and safety of SA for acute ischemic stroke. A systematical literature search of 6 databases was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SA for acute ischemic stroke compared with western conventional medicines (WCMs). All statistical analyses were performed by the Rev Man Version 5.0. Eight studies with 538 participants were included in the studies. The studies were deemed to have an unclear risk of bias based on the Cochrane Back Review Group. Compared with the WCM, 6 RCTs showed significant effects of SA for improving neurological deficit scores (P < 0.01); 4 RCTs showed significant effects of SA for favoring the clinical effective rate (P < 0.01) However, the adverse events have not been documented. In conclusion, SA appears to be able to improve neurological deficit score and the clinical effective rate when compared with WCM, though the beneficial effect from SA is possibly overvalued because of generally low methodology of the included trials. Locomotor hyperactivity in 14-3-3Zeta KO mice is associated with dopamine transporter dysfunction
Dopamine (DA) neurotransmission requires a complex series of enzymatic reactions that are tightly linked to catecholamine exocytosis and receptor interactions on pre- and postsynaptic neurons. Regulation of dopaminergic signalling is primarily achieved through reuptake of extracellular DA by the DA transporter (DAT) on presynaptic neurons. Aberrant regulation of DA signalling, and in particular hyperactivation, has been proposed as a key insult in the presentation of schizophrenia and related neuropsychiatric disorders. We recently identified 14-3-3ζ as an essential component of neurodevelopment and a central risk factor in the schizophrenia protein interaction network. Our analysis of 14-3-3ζ-deficient mice now shows that baseline hyperactivity of knockout (KO) mice is rescued by the antipsychotic drug clozapine. 14-3-3ζ KO mice displayed enhanced locomotor hyperactivity induced by the DA releaser amphetamine. Consistent with 14-3-3ζ having a role in DA signalling, we found increased levels of DA in the striatum of 14-3-3ζ KO mice. Although 14-3-3ζ is proposed to modulate activity of the rate-limiting DA biosynthesis enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), we were unable to identify any differences in total TH levels, TH localization or TH activation in 14-3-3ζ KO mice. Rather, our analysis identified significantly reduced levels of DAT in the absence of notable differences in RNA or protein levels of DA receptors D1–D5. Providing insight into the mechanisms by which 14-3-3ζ controls DAT stability, we found a physical association between 14-3-3ζ and DAT by co-immunoprecipitation. Mitochondrial phylogeography and demographic history of the Vicuña: implications for conservation
The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna; Miller, 1924) is a conservation success story, having recovered from near extinction in the 1960s to current population levels estimated at 275 000. However, lack of information about its demographic history and genetic diversity has limited both our understanding of its recovery and the development of science-based conservation measures. To examine the evolution and recent demographic history of the vicuña across its current range and to assess its genetic variation and population structure, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the control region (CR) for 261 individuals from 29 populations across Peru, Chile and Argentina. Our results suggest that populations currently designated as Vicugna vicugna vicugna and Vicugna vicugna mensalis comprise separate mitochondrial lineages. The current population distribution appears to be the result of a recent demographic expansion associated with the last major glacial event of the Pleistocene in the northern (18 to 22°S) dry Andes 14–12 000 years ago and the establishment of an extremely arid belt known as the 'Dry Diagonal' to 29°S. Within the Dry Diagonal, small populations of V. v. vicugna appear to have survived showing the genetic signature of demographic isolation, whereas to the north V. v. mensalis populations underwent a rapid demographic expansion before recent anthropogenic impacts
On Tackling the Limits of Resolution in SAT Solving
The practical success of Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) solvers stems from the
CDCL (Conflict-Driven Clause Learning) approach to SAT solving. However, from a
propositional proof complexity perspective, CDCL is no more powerful than the
resolution proof system, for which many hard examples exist. This paper
proposes a new problem transformation, which enables reducing the decision
problem for formulas in conjunctive normal form (CNF) to the problem of solving
maximum satisfiability over Horn formulas. Given the new transformation, the
paper proves a polynomial bound on the number of MaxSAT resolution steps for
pigeonhole formulas. This result is in clear contrast with earlier results on
the length of proofs of MaxSAT resolution for pigeonhole formulas. The paper
also establishes the same polynomial bound in the case of modern core-guided
MaxSAT solvers. Experimental results, obtained on CNF formulas known to be hard
for CDCL SAT solvers, show that these can be efficiently solved with modern
MaxSAT solvers
A search for the decay modes B+/- to h+/- tau l
We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decay modes B+/- to h+/-
tau l (h= K,pi; l= e,mu) using the BaBar data sample, which corresponds to 472
million BBbar pairs. The search uses events where one B meson is fully
reconstructed in one of several hadronic final states. Using the momenta of the
reconstructed B, h, and l candidates, we are able to fully determine the tau
four-momentum. The resulting tau candidate mass is our main discriminant
against combinatorial background. We see no evidence for B+/- to h+/- tau l
decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on each branching fraction at
