Near-UV photolysis cross sections of CH_3OOH and HOCH_2OOH determined via action spectroscopy
Knowledge of molecular photolysis cross sections is important for determining atmospheric lifetimes and fates of many species. A method and laser apparatus for measurement of these cross sections in the near-ultraviolet (UV) region is described. The technique is based on action spectroscopy, where the yield of a photodissociation product (in this case OH) is measured as a function of excitation energy. For compounds yielding OH, this method can be used to measure near-UV photodissociation cross section as low as 10โ23 cm2 moleculeโ1. The method is applied to determine the photodissociation cross sections for methyl hydroperoxide (CH3OOH; MHP) and hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HOCH2OOH; HMHP) in the 305โ365 nm wavelength range. The measured cross sections are in good agreement with previous measurements of absorption cross sections
XTH acts at the microfibril-matrix interface during cell elongation
Sulphorhodamine-labelled oligosaccharides of xyloglucan are incorporated into the cell wall of Arabidopsis and tobacco roots, and of cultured Nicotiana tabacum cells by the transglucosylase (XET) action of XTHs. In the cell wall of diffusely growing cells, the subcellular pattern of XET action revealed a 'fibrillar' pattern, different from the xyloglucan localization. The fibrillar fluorescence pattern had no net orientation in spherical cultured cells. It changed to transverse to the long axis when the cells started to elongate, a feature mirroring the rearrangements of cortical microtubules and the accompanying cellulose deposition. Interference with the polymerization of microtubules and with cellulose deposition inhibited this strong and 'fibrillar'-organized XET-action, whereas interference with actin-polymerization only decreased the intensity of enzyme action. Epidermal cells of a mutant with reduced cellulose synthesis also had low XET action. Root hairs (tip-growing cells) exhibited high XET-action over all their length, but lacked the specific parallel pattern. In both diffuse- and tip-growing cell types extraction of the incorporated fluorescent xyloglucans by a xyloglucan-specific endoglucanase reduced the fluorescence, but the 'fibrillar' appearance in diffuse growing cells was not eliminated. These results show that XTHs act on the xyloglucans attached to cellulose microfibrils. After incorporation of the fluorescent oligosaccharides, the xyloglucans decorate the cellulose microfibrils and become inaccessible to hydrolytic enzymes

Cloud Chamber: A Performance with Real Time Two-Way Interaction between Subatomic Particles and Violinist
โCloud Chamberโ - a composition by Alexis Kirke, Antonino Chiaramonte, and Anna Troisi - is a live performance in which the invisible quantum world becomes visible as a violinist and subatomic particle tracks interact together. An electronic instrument was developed which can be โplayedโ live by radioactive atomic particles. Electronic circuitry was developed enabling a violin to create a physical force field that directly affects the ions generated by cosmic radiation particles. This enabled the violinist and the ions to influence each other musically in real time. A glass cloud chamber was used onstage to make radioactivity visible in bright white tracks moving within, with the tracks projected onto a large screen

Ultraviolet and charged particle irradiation of proposed solar cell coverslide materials and conductive coatings for the Helios spacecraft
Coverslide materials consisting of Corning 7940 fused silica, multilayers of titanium and manganese oxides (blue reflector), and indium oxide (conductive-coating) were exposed to 16 UVSC up to 800 EUVSH in vacuum. Slight changes in optical transmittance and optical absorptance were found in the (200-360) millimicron regions of the fused silica and conductive coating respectively. Exposure to 4 KeV protons and 4.5 KeV electrons in vacuum, produced decreases of several percent in transmittance, (200-360) millimicron region in the fused silicas after total fluxes less or = 10 to the 14th power particles/sq cm. Sheet resistance of the conductive coating increased above 1.0 kilo-ohm/square after a total flux less or = 10 to the 14th power particles/sq cm. Solar cells with coverglasses utilizing the indium oxide conductive coating were exposed to 1 Mev electrons and 1 Mev protons in air and in vacuum. Total fluxes ranged from 10 to the 11th power particles/sq cm to 10 to the 15th power particle/sq cm. There was no appreciable degradation in the resistance of the conductive coating during or after these tests
A systematic review and economic evaluation of subcutaneous and sublingual allergen immunotherapy in adults and children with seasonal allergic rhinitis
ยฉ Queenโs Printer and Controller of HMSO 2013Severe allergic rhinitis uncontrolled by conventional medication can substantially affect quality of life. Immunotherapy involves administering increasing doses of a specific allergen, with the aim of reducing sensitivity and symptomatic reactions. Recent meta-analyses have concluded that both subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) are more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms. It is uncertain which route of administration is more effective and whether or not treatment is cost-effective.National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment programm
