    ANALYZING THE PICTURE OF EYL TEXTBOOK THROUGH MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE PERSPECTIVE

    The aim of this research is to find out the value inside the picture of English textbook based on the characteristic of young learners. This research used qualitative research method. Data collected by analyzing an EYL textbooks and choosing one theme deserved with the aim of the research. Some pictures in chapter four of EYL textbook in Indonesia with the title Dinda Cooks in the Kitchen used as the data. Analyzing the data used descriptive analysis through multimodal discourse perspective related with systemic functional linguistic. The result shows that most of the aspect in the picture appropriates with characteristic of EYL and needs additional information and revision insight the design. Furthermore, the textbook developer should design the appropriate picture in transferring Indonesian culture. Transferring the culture assumed to maintain students’ interest, to evolve more meaningful picture, and to increase students’ ability in remembering the lesson based on the real context

The statements of study that should be answered in this research are: (1) How is the Eighth grade students’ enthusiasm in learning English at MTsN Banjar Selatan 1 (2) How is the Eighth grade students’ achievement in learning English at MTsN Banjar Selatan 1? (3) Is there any influence of students’ enthusiasm on students’ achievement in learning English of Eight grade at MTsN Banjar Selatan 1?\ud The population of this research is 194 students of eight grade of MTsN Banjar Selatan 1. The samples of this research are 74 students from class D and H of eight grade at MTsN Banjar Selatan 1.\ud To collect the data, the writer uses some techniques of questionnaire, interview, documentary, and observation. Data processing in this research is divided into four phases: editing, coding, tabulating, and interpreting. Approach of the research is quantitative. Then, all the data are analyzed quantitatively.\ud The enthusiasm of students of the Eighth grade students of MTsN Banjar Selatan 1 are moderate and the achievement are very high. There is an influence of students’ enthusiasm on students’ achievement in learning English. The influence of enthusiasm on English achievements stands on moderate level.\ud The students’ enthusiasm had an ameliorating effect on students’ achievement. It enabled students to use the target language more often, encouraged communication with others in the language, created an environment for stimulating classroom activities, and gave variety to language learning. Sampel dalam penelitian berjumlah 74 siswa yang berasal dari kelas delapan D dan H MTsN Banjar Selatan 1.\ud Untuk pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan beberapa teknik yaitu angket, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan observasi. Dalam penelitian ini data diproses dalam empat tahap yaitu pengeditan, persandian, perhitungan, dan menginterpretasikan. Pendekatan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Kemudian seluruh data dianalisa secara kuantitaif.\ud Antusiasme siswa kelas delapan MTsN Banjar Selatan 1 adalah cukup dan prestasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris sangat tinggi. Sehingga ada pengaruh antara antusisme siswa terhadap prestasi bahasa Inggris. Pengaruh tersebut berada pada level yang cukup.\ud Antusisme siswa dapat memberikan efek yang baik pada prestasi belajar. Hal ini memungkinkan siswa untuk lebih sering menggunakan bahasa Inggris, untuk meningkatkan komunikasi dengan siswa yang lain, menciptakan lingkungan yang mendukung untuk meningkatkan aktivitas belajar di kelas dan memberikan variasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa.     Self-Assessment: Its Roles for Higher Education Students In Academic Writing Class

    Self-Assessment is one kind of assessment technique that used by the teacher and conducted by the students in making grade of learning. By using this kind of assessment, students are stimulated to find strength and weakness in learning process, to assess the understanding about material given by the lecturer, and to judge the achievement in Academic writing class. This paper aimed to investigate the roles of self-assessment in Academic Writing Class. Purposive sampling used as sampling technique, where 5 students in Academic Writing Class involved as research sample. Self-assessment questionnaire applied in this research to know the roles of self-assessment in Academic Writing class. Interview also conducted in collecting some additional information regarding the student difficulties in conducting self-assessment. The result of the study showed that the use of self-assessment in Academic Writing class is important to know students strength and weakness in teaching and learning process, to increase the motivation in writing, and to improve the writing performance. This research expected to give contributions in the educational development especially encourages student’s awareness to optimize the use of self-assessment in Academic Writing Class and as consideration for the teachers in conducting assessment process in the teaching and learning activity
