Spatial patterns and indices for heat waves and droughts over Europe using a decomposition of extremal dependency
We present a method for the analysis and compact description of large-scale multivariate weather extremes. Spatial patterns of extreme events are identified using the tail pairwise dependence matrix (TPDM) proposed by Cooley and Thibaud (2019). We also introduce the cross-TPDM to identify patterns of common extremes in two variables. An extremal pattern index (EPI) is developed to provide a pattern-based aggregation of temperature. A heat wave definition based on EPI is able to detect the most important heat waves over Europe. As an extension for considering simultaneous extremes in two variables, we propose the threshold-based EPI (TEPI) that captures the compound character of spatial extremes. We investigate daily temperature maxima and precipitation deficits at different accumulation times and find evidence that preceding precipitation deficits have a significant influence on the development of heat waves and that heat waves often co-occur with short-term drought conditions. We exemplarily show for the European heat waves of 2003 and 2010 that TEPI is suitable for describing the large-scale compound character of heat waves.</p

Numerical convergence of the block-maxima approach to the Generalized Extreme Value distribution
In this paper we perform an analytical and numerical study of Extreme Value
distributions in discrete dynamical systems. In this setting, recent works have
shown how to get a statistics of extremes in agreement with the classical
Extreme Value Theory. We pursue these investigations by giving analytical
expressions of Extreme Value distribution parameters for maps that have an
absolutely continuous invariant measure. We compare these analytical results
with numerical experiments in which we study the convergence to limiting
distributions using the so called block-maxima approach, pointing out in which
cases we obtain robust estimation of parameters. In regular maps for which
mixing properties do not hold, we show that the fitting procedure to the
classical Extreme Value Distribution fails, as expected. However, we obtain an
empirical distribution that can be explained starting from a different
observable function for which Nicolis et al. [2006] have found analytical

Calcium phosphates and silicon: exploring methods of incorporation
Background: Bioinorganics have been explored as additives to ceramic bone graft substitutes with the aim to improve their performance in repair and regeneration of large bone defects. Silicon (Si), an essential trace element involved in the processes related to bone formation and remodeling, was shown not only to enhance osteoblasts proliferation but also to stimulate the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and preosteoblasts into the osteogenic lineage. In this study, the added value of Si to calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings was evaluated. Methods: Tissue culture plastic well plates were coated with a thin CaP layer to which traces amounts of Si were added, either by adsorption or by incorporation through coprecipitation. The physicochemical and structural properties of the coatings were characterized and the dissolution behavior was evaluated. The adsorption/incorporation of Si was successfully achieved and incorporated ions were released from the CaP coatings. Human MSCs were cultured on the coatings to examine the effects of Si on cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. For the statistical analysis, a one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc test was performed. Results: The results showed that human MSCs (hMSCs) responded to the presence of Si in the CaP coatings, in a dosedependent manner. An increase in the expression of markers of osteogenic differentiation by human MSCs was observed as a result of the increase in Si concentration. Conclusions: The incorporation/adsorption of Si into CaP coatings was successfully achieved and hMSCs responded with an increase in osteogenic genes expression with the increase of Si concentration. Furthermore, hMSCs cultured on CaP-I coatings expressed higher levels of ALP and OP, indicating that this may be the preferred method of incorporation of bioinorganics into CaPsPortuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) for providing Ana I.

Prognostic significance of downregulated expression of the candidate tumour suppressor gene SASH1 in colon cancer
The gene SASH1 (SAM- and SH3-domain containing 1) has originally been identified as a candidate tumour suppressor gene in breast cancer. SASH1 is a member of the SH3-domain containing expressed in lymphocytes (SLY1) gene family that encodes signal adapter proteins composed of several protein–protein interaction domains. The other members of this family are expressed mainly in haematopoietic cells, whereas SASH1 shows ubiquitous expression. We have used quantitative real-time PCR to investigate the expression of SASH1 in tissue samples from 113 patients with colon carcinoma, and compared the expression with 15 normal colon tissue samples. Moreover, nine benign adenomas and 10 liver metastases were analysed. Expression levels of SASH1 were strongly and significantly reduced in colon cancer of UICC stage II, III, and IV, as well as in liver metastases. Moreover, SASH1 was also found to be downregulated on protein levels by immunoblot analysis. However, SASH1 expression was not significantly deregulated in precancerous adenomas and in earlier stage lesions (UICC I). Overall, 48 out of 113 primary colon tumours showed SASH1 expression that was at least 10-fold lower than the levels found in normal colon tissue. Downregulation of SASH1 expression was correlated with the formation of metachronous distant metastasis, and multivariate analysis identified SASH1 downregulation as an independent negative prognostic parameter for patient survival. This study demonstrates for the first time that expression of a member of the SLY1-gene family has prognostic significance in human cancer
Pedometer use and self-determined motivation for walking in a cardiac telerehabilitation program: a qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation reduces morbidity and mortality. Walking is a convenient activity suitable for people with cardiac disease. Pedometers count steps, measure walking activity and motivate people to increase physical activity. In this study, patients participating in cardiac telerehabilitation were provided with a pedometer to support motivation for physical activity with the purpose of exploring pedometer use and self-determined motivation for walking experienced by patients and health professionals during a cardiac telerehabilitation program. METHODS: A qualitative research design consisting of observations, individual interviews and patient documents made the basis for a content analysis. Data was analysed deductively using Self Determination Theory as a frame for analysis and discussion, focusing on the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Twelve cardiac patients, 11 health professionals, 6 physiotherapists and 5 registered nurses were included. RESULTS: The pedometer offered independence from standardised rehabilitation since the pedometer supported tailoring, individualised walking activity based on the patient’s choice. This led to an increased autonomy. The patients felt consciously aware of health benefits of walking, and the pedometer provided feedback on walking activity leading to an increased competence to achieve goals for steps. Finally, the pedometer supported relatedness with others. The health professionals’ surveillance of patients’ steps, made the patients feel observed, yet supported, furthermore, their next of kin appeared to be supportive as walking partners. CONCLUSION: Cardiac patients’ motivation for walking was evident due to pedometer use. Even though not all aspects of motivation were autonomous and self determined, the patients felt motivated for walking. The visible steps and continuous monitoring of own walking activity made it possible for each individual patient to choose their desired kind of activity and perform ongoing adjustments of walking activity. The immediate feedback on step activity and the expectations of health benefits resulted in motivation for walking. Finally, pedometer supported walking made surveillance possible, giving the patients a feeling of being looked after and supported. Anisotropy dependence of the fluctuation spectroscopy in the critical and gaussian regimes in superconducting NaFe1-xCoxAs single crystals
We investigate thermal fluctuations in terms of diamagnetism and magnetotransport in superconducting NaFe1-xCoxAs single crystals with different doping levels. Results show that in the case of optimal doped and lightly overdoped (x= 0.03, 0.05) crystals the analysis in the critical as well as in the Gaussian fluctuation regions is consistent with the Ginzburg-Landau 3D fluctuation theory. However, in the case of strongly overdoped samples (x >= 0.07) the Ullah-Dorsey scaling of the fluctuation induced magnetoconductivity in the critical region confirms that thermal fluctuations exhibit a 3D anisotropic nature only in a narrow temperature region around T-c(H). This is consistent with the fact that in these samples the fluctuation effects in the Gaussian region above T-c may be described by the Lawrence-Doniach approach. Our results indicate that the anisotropy of these materials increases significantly with the doping level
