Theory for solvent, momentum, and energy transfer between a surfactant solution and a vapor atmosphere

    Get PDF
We develop a complete set of equations governing the evolution of a sharp interface separating a volatile-solvent/nonvolatile-surfactant solution from a vapor atmosphere. In addition to a sorption isotherm equation and the conventional balances for mass, linear momentum, and energy, these equations include a counterpart of the Hertz???Knudsen???Langmuir equation familiar from conventional theories of evaporation-condensation. This additional equation arises from a consideration of configurational forces within a thermodynamical framework. While the notion of configurational forces is well-developed and understood for the description of materials, like crystalline solids, that possess natural reference configurations, very little has been done regarding their role in materials, such as viscous fluids, that do not possess preferred reference states. We therefore provide a comprehensive discussion of configurational forces, the balance of configurational momentum, and configurational thermodynamics that does not require a choice of reference configuration. The general evolution equations arising from our theory account for the thermodynamic structure of the solution and the interface and for sources of dissipation related to the transport of surfactant, momentum, and heat in the solution, the transport of surfactant and momentum within the interface, and the transport of solute, momentum, kinetic energy, and heat across the interface. Due to the complexity of these equations, we provide approximate equations which we compare to relations that appear in the literature.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

In the Public Interest: A Discussion with Theda Skocpol about the Scholars Strategy Network

    Get PDF
Luisa Deprez and Amy Fried interview Theda Skocpol about the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN). The SSN was founded to serve as a bridging organization to help university-based researchers and teachers to get involved in public debates and make their research and ideas accessible to fellow citizens, legislators, and journalists. The SSN includes scholars from many disciplines who share research about public policy issues, elections and civic life, as well as ideas for improvements in legislation and government practices

Politics Then and Now: Looking Forward

This article is an excerpt of a concluding panel presentation from a lecture series, “Politics Then and Now, in Maine and the Nation,” presented by the Muskie School and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine in the fall of 2013. Speakers were asked to address the issue of political polarization and dysfunction, comparing how politics was played in the past with the current situation, and discussing what Maine can offer based on experiences here

Research Note: Venture Capitalists\u27 Investment Criteria: A Replication

    Get PDF
This study replicates substantial portions of a study entitled “Criteria Used by Venture Capitalists to Evaluate New Ventures Proposals” by MacMillan, Siegal, and SubbaNarasimha. Results were similar to the earlier work. The differences observed can be attributed to history effects caused by the passage of six years between the studies. Venture capitalists have become more concerned over market acceptance and less demanding of high potential rates of return and quick exit. These changes represent a more realistic view of venture potential

University of Maine NSF-ADVANCE Project Outcomes Report

The University of Maine ADVANCE IT project proposes a three-pronged approach to institutional gender equity for STEM women faculty. Specific goals and objectives include increasing the percentage of women in the STEM disciplines, supporting professional development activities, addressing recruitment, retention and advancement of women faculty and engaging other campuses in the University of Maine System, as well as the faculty union, through the dissemination of information regarding ADVANCE outcomes. Intellectual Merit. The proposed activities are rooted in a conceptual framework that focuses on faculty job satisfaction, which plays a major role in retention. This project also presents a unique perspective to institutional transformation in that it takes into consideration the faculty union and its impact on faculty advancement and job satisfaction. Broader Impact. The University of Maine ADVANCE IT project , because of its emphasis on seven other institutions in the state of Maine, has the capacity to impact women faculty beyond the proposing institution. It is expected that project results will be broadly disseminated across Maine and to other institutions through traditional means including national presentations and scholarly journal articles. As such, the University of Maine will contribute new knowledge to the field of institutional transformation
