Direct Measurement of Effective Magnetic Diffusivity in Turbulent Flow of Liquid Sodium
The first direct measurements of effective magnetic diffusivity in turbulent
flow of electro-conductive fluids (the so-called beta-effect) under magnetic
Reynolds number Rm >> 1 are reported. The measurements are performed in a
nonstationary turbulent flow of liquid sodium, generated in a closed toroidal
channel. The peak level of the Reynolds number reached Re \approx 3 10^6, which
corresponds to the magnetic Reynolds number Rm \approx 30. The magnetic
diffusivity of the liquid metal was determined by measuring the phase shift
between the induced and the applied magnetic fields. The maximal deviation of
magnetic diffusivity from its basic (laminar) value reaches about 50% .Comment: 5 pages, 6 figuser, accepted in PR
Numerical simulation of heavy fermions in an SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R symmetric Yukawa model
An exploratory numerical study of the influence of heavy fermion doublets on
the mass of the Higgs boson is performed in the decoupling limit of a chiral
symmetric Yukawa model with mirror fermions. The
behaviour of fermion and boson masses is investigated at infinite bare quartic
coupling on , and lattices. A first
estimate of the upper bound on the renormalized quartic coupling as a function
of the renormalized Yukawa-coupling is given.Comment: 15 pp + 11 Figures appended as Postscript file
Spectral function at high missing energies and momenta
The nuclear spectral function at high missing energies and momenta has been
determined from a self-consistent calculation of the Green's function in
nuclear matter using realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. The results are
compared with recent experimental data derived from () reactions on
. A rather good agreement is obtained if the Green's functions are
calculated in a non-perturbative way.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Hyperfine interaction and electronic spin fluctuation study on SrLaFeCoO (x = 0, 1, 2) by high-resolution back-scattering neutron spectroscopy
The study of hyperfine interaction by high-resolution inelastic neutron
scattering is not very well known compared to the other competing techniques
viz. NMR, M\"ossbauer, PACS etc. Also the study is limited mostly to
magnetically ordered systems. Here we report such study on
SrLaFeCoO (x = 0, 1, 2) of which first (SrFeCoO with x
= 0) has a canonical spin spin glass, the second (SrLaFeCoO with x = 1) has
a so-called magnetic glass and the third (LaFeCoO with x = 2) has a
magnetically ordered ground state. Our present study revealed clear inelastic
signal for SrLaFeCoO, possibly also inelastic signal for SrFeCoO
below the spin freezing temperatures but no inelastic signal at all
for for the magnetically ordered LaFeCoO in the neutron scattering
spectra. The broadened inelastic signals observed suggest hyperfine field
distribution in the two disordered magnetic glassy systems and no signal for
the third compound suggests no or very small hyperfine field at the Co nucleus
due to Co electronic moment. For the two magnetic glassy system apart from the
hyperfine signal due only to Co, we also observed electronic spin fluctuations
probably from both Fe and Co electronic moments. \end{abstract
Hydraulic Actuated Automotive Cooling Systems - Nonlinear Control and Test
The replacement of traditional automotive mechanical cooling system components with computer controlled servo-motor driven actuators can improve temperature tracking and reduce parasitic losses. The integration of hydraulic actuators in the engine cooling circuit offers greater power density in a smaller package space when compared with electric actuators. In this paper, a comprehensive nonlinear backstepping robust control technique is developed to regulate the engine coolant temperature by controlling a hydraulic coolant pump and radiator fan. An experimental test bench has been assembled to investigate the hydraulic automotive thermal system performance. Representative numerical and experimental results are presented and discussed. Overall, the proposed controller was successful in tracking prescribed engine temperature profiles while harmoniously regulating the power consumption of the coolant pump and radiator fan
Self-consistent treatment of the self-energy in nuclear matter
The influence of hole-hole propagation in addition to the conventional
particle-particle propagation, on the energy per nucleon and the momentum
distribution is investigated. The results are compared to the
Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) calculations with a continuous choice and
conventional choice for the single-particle spectrum. The Bethe-Goldstone
equation has been solved using realistic interactions. Also, the structure
of nucleon self-energy in nuclear matter is evaluated. All the self-energies
are calculated self-consistently. Starting from the BHF approximation without
the usual angle-average approximation, the effects of hole-hole contributions
and a self-consistent treatment within the framework of the Green function
approach are investigated. Using the self-consistent self-energy, the hole and
particle self-consistent spectral functions including the particle-particle and
hole-hole ladder contributions in nuclear matter are calculated using realistic
interactions. We found that, the difference in binding energy between both
results, i.e. BHF and self-consistent Green function, is not large. This
explains why is the BHF ignored the 2h1p contribution.Comment: Preprint 20 pages including 15 figures and one tabl
Symmetrization and enhancement of the continuous Morlet transform
The forward and inverse wavelet transform using the continuous Morlet basis
may be symmetrized by using an appropriate normalization factor. The loss of
response due to wavelet truncation is addressed through a renormalization of
the wavelet based on power. The spectral density has physical units which may
be related to the squared amplitude of the signal, as do its margins the mean
wavelet power and the integrated instant power, giving a quantitative estimate
of the power density with temporal resolution. Deconvolution with the wavelet
response matrix reduces the spectral leakage and produces an enhanced wavelet
spectrum providing maximum resolution of the harmonic content of a signal.
Applications to data analysis are discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, minor revision, final versio
Mass Spectrum and Bounds on the Couplings in Yukawa Models With Mirror-Fermions
The symmetric Yukawa model with mirror-fermions
in the limit where the mirror-fermion is decoupled is studied both analytically
and numerically. The bare scalar self-coupling is fixed at zero and
infinity. The phase structure is explored and the relevant phase transition is
found to be consistent with a second order one. The fermionic mass spectrum
close to that transition is discussed and a first non-perturbative estimate of
the influence of fermions on the upper and lower bounds on the renormalized
scalar self-coupling is given. Numerical results are confronted with
perturbative predictions.Comment: 7 (Latex) page
On limits of spacetimes -- a coordinate-free approach
A coordinate-free approach to limits of spacetimes is developed. The limits
of the Schwarzschild metric as the mass parameter tends to 0 or are
studied, extending previous results. Besides the known Petrov type D and 0
limits, three vacuum plane-wave solutions of Petrov type N are found to be
limits of the Schwarzschild spacetime.Comment: 19 p
Correlations in Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter
The single-particle spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are
computed using the ladder approximation within the theory of finite temperature
Green's functions. The internal energy and the momentum distributions of
protons and neutrons are studied as a function of the density and the asymmetry
of the system. The proton states are more strongly depleted when the asymmetry
increases while the occupation of the neutron states is enhanced as compared to
the symmetric case. The self-consistent Green's function approach leads to
slightly smaller energies as compared to the Brueckner Hartree Fock approach.
This effect increases with density and thereby modifies the saturation density
and leads to smaller symmetry energies.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
