    AbstractBackground: Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death globally: an estimated 17.5 million people died in 2012. By combining the benefits of magnetic navigation and ultrasound (US) imaging, the authors proposed a robotic platform (i.e. the MicroVAST platform) for intravascular medical procedures.Methods: A 3D imaging US-based tracking algorithm is implemented for the navigation of a magnetic-dragged soft-tethered device. Tests were performed to evaluate the algorithm in terms of tracking error and precision of locomotion.Results: The 3D imaging US-based algorithm tracked the endovascular device with an error of 6.4 ± 2.8 pixels and a mean displacement between the endovascular device and the preoperative path of 13.6 ± 4.5 mm (computational time of 12.2 ± 1.5 ms and 30.7 ± 6.1 matched features).Conclusions: The MicroVAST platform includes innovative solutions for navigation allowing for an assisted magnetic locomotion of medical devices in the cardiovascular district by combining a 3D ima..

    Diet Selection by the Italian Hare (Lepus corsicanus de Winton,1898) in Two Protected Coastal Areas of Latium

    Abstract: This study was focused on the diet and feeding behaviour of Lepus corsicanus in two protected coastal areas of Latium, Castelporziano Presidential Estate (CPE) and Circeo National Park (CNP). Plant frequency was assessed by the quadrat method, while diet composition was determined by microhistological analysis of faecal samples. Over the year, the Italian hare fed on 185 of the 229 plant species identified in vegetation, with most of them ingested in low percentages (1%). During the dry season (DS), in both areas, Brachypodium sylvaticum, Cynodon dactylon, and Avena fatua were among the most consumed species. In the wet season (WS) the most common plant species in diet were B. sylvaticum, Poa trivialis, and Carex distachya in CPE and Dactylis glomerata, Cynosurus echinatus, and Spartium junceum in CNP. In both sites, considering the annual selection of life forms, grasses and leguminous forbs were preferred, while non-leguminous forbs and shrubs were used less than expected according to their availability. ANOSIM analysis showed significant differences between sites in DS and WS diets. Our study evidenced that the Italian hare behaved as generalist, revealing its capability for exploiting several plant species and to adapt its diet preferences to space-time variation of food availability

    Identification of Anti-Neuroinflammatory Bioactive Compounds in Essential Oils and Aqueous Distillation Residues Obtained from Commercial Varieties of Cannabis sativa L

    Neuroinflammation, which is mainly triggered by microglia, is a key contributor to multiple neurodegenerative diseases. Natural products, and in particular Cannabis sativa L., due to its richness in phytochemical components, represent ideal candidates to counteract neuroinflammation. We previously characterized different C. sativa commercial varieties which showed significantly different chemical profiles. On these bases, the aim of this study was to evaluate essential oils and aqueous distillation residues from the inflorescences of three different hemp varieties for their anti-neuroinflammatory activity in BV-2 microglial cells. Cells were pretreated with aqueous residues or essential oils and then activated with LPS. Unlike essential oils, aqueous residues showed negligible effects in terms of anti-inflammatory activity. Among the essential oils, the one obtained from 'Gorilla Glue' was the most effective in inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators and in upregulating anti-inflammatory ones through the modulation of the p38 MAPK/NF-kappa B pathway. Moreover, the sesquiterpenes (E)-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, and caryophyllene oxide were identified as the main contributors to the essential oils' anti-inflammatory activity. To our knowledge, the anti-neuroinflammatory activity of alpha-humulene has not been previously described. In conclusion, our work shows that C. sativa essential oils characterized by high levels of sesquiterpenes can be promising candidates in the prevention/counteraction of neuroinflammation

    Management of anterior thigh injuries in soccer players: practical guide

    Most of the anterior thigh injuries are contusions or strains, however, some of these injuries can be career ending. Early diagnosis and correct treatment are key to successful outcome. Analyzing injury mechanism and adding both clinical and imaging findings, clinicians can make the right treatment decisions already often in the acute phase of the injury. Low grade contusions and muscle strains are treated well with planned rehabilitation, but complete tendon injuries or avulsions can require operative treatment. Also, neglected minor injuries could lead to chronic disabilities and time lost from play. Typical clinical presentation of anterior thigh injury is swelling and pain during hip flexion or knee extension. In more severe cases a clear gap can be palpated. Imaging methods used are ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which are helpful for clinicians to determine more exact the extent of injury. MRI can identify possible tendon retractions which may need surgery. Clinicians should also be aware of other traumatic lesions affecting anterior thigh area such as myositis ossificans formation. Optimal treatment should be coordinated including acute phase treatment with rest, ice, and compression together with designed return-to-play protocol. The anatomical structure involved lines the treatment pathway.     822 Local radiotherapy synergizes with tumor-specific TCR redirected T cells in the rejection of prostate cancer

    Background Adoptive T cell therapy (ACT) has become a promising option for cancer patients. While tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes were initially exploited as a source of tumor reactive lymphocytes, T cells genetically redirected to the tumor by TCR/CAR gene transfer are now in clinical validation. In the case of solid tumors, unfavorable immunosuppressive microenvironments remain recognized barriers to therapeutic efficacy. We have recently reported that the therapeutic activity of ACT against poorly immunogenic and indolent prostate cancer is improved by the concurrent targeting of the tumor stroma by mean of T cells redirected to an ubiquitously expressed minor histocompatibility antigen or a tumor vessel targeted TNF derivative. We have now taken the concept further and hypothesized that local radiotherapy (RT), might also synergize with ACT by promoting lymphocyte endothelial transmigration and tumor recognition, and ultimately favor abscopal effects. Methods We investigated the combination of local RT and ACT in TRAMP (Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate) mice and in mice bearing subcutaneous B16/B16-OVA (MO4) or TRAMP-C2/TRAMP-C2-OVA tumors. Local RT was delivered by X-RAD SmART (the Small Animal Radiation Therapy) microirradiator in single dose or hypo-fractioned regimens. ACT consisted of T cells engineered with tumor-specific TCRs. Immunogenic consequences were analyzed by Real-Time PCR, and flow cytometry (FACS) analyses. Prostate tumor debulking was evaluated by histological analyses. Results We found that local hypofractionated RT and ACT, while individually inefficacious in controlling tumor growth, concurred to the debulking of advanced prostate adenocarcinoma when used in combination in treating TRAMP mice. Mechanistically, exposing isolated tumor cells, or the TRAMP mouse prostate to hypo-fractionated RT regimens induced stronger type-I interferon (IFN-I) responses, when compared to single high dose. Acutely, hypofractionated RT promoted better immune tumor infiltration, among which TCR redirected effector cells. Conclusions Data support feasibility and efficacy of combining hypo-fractionated local RT with ACT in the form of TCR engineered T cells to promote prostate cancer recognition and eradication. Tumor debulking was observed in the absence of treatment-related toxicity. Systemic recirculation of TCR redirected T cells was observed. We are now investigating therapeutic effects at distal (metastatic) sites.     Muscle injuries: a brief guide to classification and management

    Muscle injuries are frequent in athletes. Despite their high incidence, advances in clinical diagnostic criteria and imaging, their optimal management and rehabilitation strategies are still debated in literature. Furthermore, reinjury rate is high after a muscle lesion, and an improper treatment or an early return to sports can increase the rate of reinjury and complications. Most muscle injuries are managed conservatively with excellent results, and surgery is normally advocated only for larger tears. This article reviews the current literature to provide physicians and rehabilitation specialists with the necessary basic tools to diagnose, classify and to treat muscle injuries. Based on anatomy, biomechanics, and imaging features of muscle injury, the use of a recently reported new classification system is also advocated

    Sustainability has become of paramount importance, as evidenced by the increasing number of norms and regulations concerning various sectors. Due to its intrinsic trans-sectorial nature, tribology has drawn the attention of the supporters of sustainability. This discipline allows the environmental, economic, and social impacts to be decreased in a wide range of applications following the same strategies. In 2010, Nosonovsky and Bhushan drew up 12 approaches based on the 12 principles of green chemistry and the 12 principles of green engineering, defining the “12 principles of green tribology.” This review exploits the 12 principles of green tribology to fathom the developed research related to sustainability and tribology. Different approaches and innovative studies have been proposed in this short selection as references to consider for further development, pursuing the efforts of the scientific community for a sustainable future through the contribution also of tribosystems. The manuscript aims to provide practical examples of materials, lubricants, strategies, and technologies that have contributed to the overall progress of tribology, decreasing wear and friction and increasing efficiency, and at the same time promoting sustainable development, lowering toxicity, waste production, and loss of energy and resources
