Measurements of soil respiration and simple models dependent on moisture and temperature for an Amazonian southwest tropical forest
Soil respiration plays a significant role in the carbon cycle of Amazonian tropical forests, although in situ measurements have only been poorly reported and the dependence of soil moisture and soil temperature also weakly understood. This work investigates the temporal variability of soil respiration using field measurements, which also included soil moisture, soil temperature and litterfall, from April 2003 to January 2004, in a southwest Brazilian tropical rainforest near Ji-Paranå, RondÎnia. The experimental design deployed five automatic (static, semi-opened) soil chambers connected to an infra-red CO2 gas analyzer. The mean half-hourly soil respiration showed a large scattering from 0.6 to 18.9 ”mol CO2 m-2 s-1 and the average was 8.0±3.4 ”mol CO2 m-2 s-1. Soil respiration varied seasonally, being lower in the dry season and higher in the wet season, which generally responded positively to the variation of soil moisture and temperature year round. The peak was reached in the dry-to-wet season transition (September), this coincided with increasing sunlight, evapotranspiration and ecosystem productivity. Litterfall processes contributed to meet very favorable conditions for biomass decomposition in early wet season, especially the fresh litter on the forest floor accumulated during the dry season. We attempted to fit three models with the data: the exponential Q10 model, the Reichstein model, and the log-soil moisture model. The models do not contradict the scattering of observations, but poorly explain the variance of the half-hourly data, which is improved when the lag-time days averaging is longer. Spin Analysis of Supersymmetric Particles
The spin of supersymmetric particles can be determined at colliders
unambiguously. This is demonstrated for a characteristic set of non-colored
supersymmetric particles -- smuons, selectrons, and charginos/neutralinos. The
analysis is based on the threshold behavior of the excitation curves for pair
production in collisions, the angular distribution in the production
process and decay angular distributions. In the first step we present the
observables in the helicity formalism for the supersymmetric particles.
Subsequently we confront the results with corresponding analyses of
Kaluza-Klein particles in theories of universal extra space dimensions which
behave distinctly different from supersymmetric theories. It is shown in the
third step that a set of observables can be designed which signal the spin of
supersymmetric particles unambiguously without any model assumptions. Finally
in the fourth step it is demonstrated that the determination of the spin of
supersymmetric particles can be performed experimentally in practice at an

Pair production of the heavy leptons in future high energy linear e^{+}e^{-} colliders
The littlest Higgs model with T-parity predicts the existence of the T-odd
particles, which can only be produced in pair. We consider pair production of
the T-odd leptons in future high energy linear collider ().
Our numerical results show that, as long as the T-odd leptons are not too
heavy, they can be copiously produced and their possible signals might be
detected via the processes in future

Multiobjective optimization of MPLS-IP networks with a variable neighborhood genetic algorithm
This paper presents a Genetic Algorithm for the optimization of multiple indices of Quality of Service of Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) IP networks. The proposed algorithm, the Variable Neighborhood Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (VN-MGA), is a Genetic Algorithm based on the NSGA-II, with the particular feature that solutions are encoded defining two different kinds of neighborhoods. The first neighborhood is defined by considering as decision variables the edges that form the routes to be followed by each request, whilst the second part of solution is kept constant. The second neighborhood is defined by considering the request sequence as decision variable, with the first part kept constant. Comparisons are performed with: (i) a VNS algorithm that performs a switch between the same two neighborhoods that are used in VN-MGA; and (ii) the results obtained with an integer linear programming solver, running a scalarized version of the multiobjective problem. The results indicate that the proposed VN-MGA outperforms the pure VNS algorithm, and provides a good approximation of the exact Pareto fronts obtained with Integer Linear Programming (ILP) approach, at a much smaller computational cost. Besides potential benefits of the application of the proposed approach to the optimization of packet routing in MPLS networks, this work raises the theoretical issue of the systematic application of variable encodings, which allow variable neighborhood searches, as generic operators inside general evolutionary computation algorithms. Lepton flavor violation decays in the topcolor-assisted technicolor model and the littlest Higgs model with parity
The new particles predicted by the topcolor-assisted technicolor ()
model and the littlest Higgs model with T-parity (called model) can
induce the lepton flavor violation () couplings at tree level or one loop
level, which might generate large contributions to some processes. Taking
into account the constraints of the experimental data on the relevant free
parameters, we calculate the branching ratios of the decay processes
with = , and
in the context of these two kinds of new physics models. We find
that the model and the model can indeed produce significant

Assessing the impact of changes in surface cover, human behaviour and climate on energy partitioning across Greater London
Climate-sensitive urban design is an increasingly important consideration for city planners and policy makers.
This study demonstrates the use of a biophysical model to assess the response of urban climate to various
changes, including population growth, reduced energy use, urban development and urban greening initiatives.
Model inputs are intentionally derived using only publicly available information and assumptions involved in
collating the data are discussed. Results are summarised in terms of the energy partitioning which captures
changes in meteorology, surface characteristics and human behaviour. The model has been recently evaluated
for the region, and those findings are drawn upon here to discuss the modelâs capabilities and limitations. Model
simulations demonstrate how both intentional and inadvertent changes to the urban landscape can alter the
urban climate. For example, the impact of population growth depends on where, and how, people are housed,
and recent changes in garden composition have reduced evaporation. This study has been designed so that model
output could be combined with socio-economic data in future, enabling both risk and vulnerability to be
considered together
Efeitos dos excessos de alumĂnio, cloro e manganĂȘs em dois cultivares de soja (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)
Two soybean cultivars, Santa Rosa and FV-1, were grown in nutrient solution in the presence of high concentrations of Al (24 ppm), CI (1750 ppm) and Mn (25 ppm). Observations, measurements and chemical analyses allowed for the following conclusions to be drawn: (1) symptoms of toxicity are in agreement with those described in the literatura; (2) the detrimental effect obeyed the decreasing order - Mn Al CI; (3) dry matter production by the variety UFV - 1 was relatively more affected by the treatments; (4) leaf analyses do not provide a reliable indication of the sensitivity of the two varieties to the high levels of the three elements in the substrate; (5) Ca/Al ratio in the roots keeps a good relationship with the relative tolerance of the two cultivas to excess Al in the medium.Dois cultivares de soja, Santa Rosa e UFV-1, foram cultivados em solução nutritiva na presença de excesso de alumĂnio, cloro e manganĂȘs.
