Non-linear clustering during the BEC dark matter phase transition
Spherical collapse of the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) dark matter model is
studied in the Thomas Fermi approximation. The evolution of the overdensity of
the collapsed region and its expansion rate are calculated for two scenarios.
We consider the case of a sharp phase transition (which happens when the
critical temperature is reached) from the normal dark matter state to the
condensate one and the case of a smooth first order phase transition where
there is a continuous conversion of "normal" dark matter to the BEC phase. We
present numerical results for the physics of the collapse for a wide range of
the model's space parameter, i.e. the mass of the scalar particle
and the scattering length . We show the dependence of the transition
redshift on and . Since small scales collapse earlier and
eventually before the BEC phase transition the evolution of collapsing halos in
this limit is indeed the same in both the CDM and the BEC models. Differences
are expected to appear only on the largest astrophysical scales. However, we
argue that the BEC model is almost indistinguishable from the usual dark matter
scenario concerning the evolution of nonlinear perturbations above typical
clusters scales, i.e., . This provides an analytical
confirmation for recent results from cosmological numerical simulations [H.-Y.

Dual consent? Donors' and recipients' views about involvement in decision-making on the use of embryos created by gamete donation in research
Background Reasonable disagreement about the role awarded to gamete donors in decision-making on the use of embryos created by gamete donation (EGDs) for research purposes emphasises the importance of considering the implementation of participatory, adaptive, and trustworthy policies and guidelines for consent procedures. However, the perspectives of gamete donors and recipients about decision-making regarding research with EGDs are still under-researched, which precludes the development of policies and guidelines informed by evidence. This study seeks to explore the views of donors and recipients about who should take part in consent processes for the use of EGDs in research. Methods From July 2017 to June 2018, 72 gamete donors and 175 recipients completed a self-report structured questionnaire at the Portuguese Public Bank of Gametes (response rate: 76%). Agreement with dual consent was defined as the belief that the use of EGDs in research should be consented by both donors and recipients. Results The majority of participants (74.6% of donors and 65.7% of recipients) were willing to donate embryos for research. Almost half of the donors (48.6%) and half of the recipients (46.9%) considered that a dual consent procedure is desirable. This view was more frequent among employed recipients (49.7%) than among non-employed (21.4%). Donors were less likely to believe that only recipients should be involved in giving consent for the use of EGDs in research (25.0% vs. 41.7% among recipients) and were more frequently favourable to the idea of exclusive donors' consent (26.4% vs. 11.4% among recipients). Conclusions Divergent views on dual consent among donors and recipients indicate the need to develop evidence-based and ethically sustainable policies and guidelines to protect well-being, autonomy and reproductive rights of both stakeholder groups. More empirical research and further theoretical normative analyses are needed to inform people-centred policy and guidelines for shared decision-making concerning the use of EGDs for research
The Three Loop Two-Mass Contribution to the Gluon Vacuum Polarization
We calculate the two-mass contribution to the 3-loop vacuum polarization of
the gluon in Quantum Chromodynamics at virtuality for general masses
and also present the analogous result for the photon in Quantum
Electrodynamics.Comment: 5 pages Late
The unpolarized two-loop massive pure singlet Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering
We calculate the massive two--loop pure singlet Wilson coefficients for heavy
quark production in the unpolarized case analytically in the whole kinematic
region and derive the threshold and asymptotic expansions. We also recalculate
the corresponding massless two--loop Wilson coefficients. The complete
expressions contain iterated integrals with elliptic letters. The contributing
alphabets enlarge the Kummer-Poincar\'e letters by a series of square-root
valued letters. A new class of iterated integrals, the Kummer-elliptic
integrals, are introduced. For the structure functions and we also
derive improved asymptotic representations adding power corrections. Numerical
results are presented.Comment: 42, pages Latex, 8 Figure
Evidence that the degree of band 3 phosphorylation modulates human erythrocytes nitric oxide efflux â in vitro model of hyperfibrinogenemia
© 2011 â IOS Press and the authors. All rights reservedRecent evidence has shown that plasma fibrinogen, a major cardiovascular risk factor, interacts with the erythrocyte membrane and acts to influence blood flow via erythrocyte nitric oxide (NO) modulation. In the present pioneer in-vitro study, whole blood samples were harvested from healthy subjects and aliquots were incubated in the absence (control aliquots) and presence of fibrinogen at different degrees of band 3 phosphorylation, and the levels of NO, nitrite, nitrate and S-nitroglutathione (GSNO) were determined.
Hyperfibrinogenemia interferes with erythrocyte NO mobilization without changing its efflux in a way that seems to be dependent of the degree of band 3 phosphorylation. In presence of higher fibrinogen concentrations the NO efflux is reinforced when band 3 is phosphorylated (p < 0.001). Higher levels of nitrite, nitrate and GSNO were documented (p < 0.05). However, the mechanisms by which fibrinogen signalling modulates erythrocyte function remain to be clarified and are currently under study. These conditions may be considered an approach to be followed in blood storage for transfusions. This study was supported by grants from the FCT - Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (project reference PTDC/SAU-OSM/73449/2006
The Initial State QED Corrections to Annihilation to a Neutral Vector Boson Revisited
We calculate the non-singlet, the pure singlet contribution, and their
interference term, at due to electron-pair initial state
radiation to annihilation into a neutral vector boson in a direct
analytic computation without any approximation. The correction is represented
in terms of iterated incomplete elliptic integrals. Performing the limit we find discrepancies with the earlier results of
Ref.~\cite{Berends:1987ab} and confirm results obtained in
Ref.~\cite{Blumlein:2011mi} where the effective method of massive operator
matrix elements has been used, which works for all but the power corrections in
. In this way, we also confirm the validity of the factorization of
massive partons in the Drell-Yan process. We also add non-logarithmic terms at
which have not been considered in \cite{Berends:1987ab}. The
corrections are of central importance for precision analyzes in
annihilation into at high luminosity.Comment: 4 pages Latex, 2 Figures, several style file
Phase Transition and Monopoles Densities in a Nearest Neighbors Two-Dimensional Spin Ice Model
In this work, we show that, due to the alternating orientation of the spins
in the ground state of the artificial square spin ice, the influence of a set
of spins at a certain distance of a reference spin decreases faster than the
expected result for the long range dipolar interaction, justifying the use of
the nearest neighbor two dimensional square spin ice model as an effective
model. Using an extension of the model presented in ref. [Scientific Reports 5,
15875 (2015)], considering the influence of the eight nearest neighbors of each
spin on the lattice, we analyze the thermodynamics of the model and study the
monopoles and string densities dependence as a function of the temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
The two-mass contribution to the three-loop pure singlet operator matrix element
We present the two-mass QCD contributions to the pure singlet operator matrix
element at three loop order in x-space. These terms are relevant for
calculating the structure function at as well as
for the matching relations in the variable flavor number scheme and the heavy
quark distribution functions at the same order. The result for the operator
matrix element is given in terms of generalized iterated integrals that include
square root letters in the alphabet, depending also on the mass ratio through
the main argument. Numerical results are presented.Comment: 28 papges Latex, 3 figure
