This paper analyses students’ initial expectations concerning personal investment in different domains of academic life, as well as behaviours some months later in those same dimensions. The sample included 314 first year students of the University of Minho from three graduations areas: science and engineering, economic sciences, and social sciences and humanities. A questionnaire of academic involvement (QEA; Soares & Almeida, 2001) was applied to students at entrance (expectations version) and at middle of first semester (behaviours version). Results suggest higher levels of initial expectations at the entrance in the university, and a significant decrease of those levels some months later, namely in the institutional and vocational subscales. Some significant changes have been found considering the domain and option of graduation studies, gender and academic level of parents.

The study aims to identify the legal requirements of the legal validity of the printed copy of the electronic document to compose a traditional administrative process in Brazilian Administrative Law. The starting point was the differentiation between physical and electronic documents and the analysis of legal requirements for their legal validity. Electronic documents can be native digital or scanned. The identification of the agent responsible for the electronic act is done by the electronic signature (login / password). The species digital signature and registered signature are accepted. Brazilian law presumes the authenticity and integrity of native digital electronic administrative acts with digital signature based on digital certification issued by the Brazilian Public Key Infrastructure (ICP-Brasil), but does not grant the same status to the registered signature. We conclude that the hard copy of this original electronic act must be authenticated to acquire legal validity and produce evidence in the conventional administrative proceeding.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

The major constituent from the hexane extract of the seeds of P. insignis is GFC (garcinielliptone FC). Doses of 25, 50and 75 mg/kg of GFC were aseptically suspended in 0.05% Tween 80 dissolved in 0.9% saline (vehicle) and orally administered for30, 90 and 120 consecutive days to adult Swiss mice. In this work, the repeated oral administration, in animals of both sexes, demonstrates that this compound is not able to induce mortality and/or behavioral changes in adult mice. In addition, body weightgain, feed intake and disposal of excreta were not altered by the administration of this compound with repeated doses. Furthermore,no differences in weight and macroscopic structure of the brain, liver, kidney, lung, heart and spleen between groups of male andfemale adult mice were observed after treatment. During the periods of treatment, GFC produced no significant changes onhaematological and biochemical parameters in male and female mice treated with all doses used. The aim of this study was toinvestigate the toxicological potential of GFC through behavioral, hematological, biochemical and morphological parameters inanimals in order to ensure the safe use of Platonia insignis in folk medicine.Fil: Silva, Ana P.. The sugarcane (Saccharum spp) presents economic importance, mainly for tropical regions, being an important Brazilian commodity. However, this crop is strongly dependent on fertilizers, mainly nitrogen (N). This study assessed the plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) associated with sugarcane that could be used as a potential inoculant to the crop. We evaluated the genetic diversity of PGPB in the plant tissue of sugarcane varieties (RB 867515, RB 1011, and RB 92579). The primer BOX-A1R was used to differentiate the similar isolated and further sequencing 16S rRNA ribosomal gene. The 16S rRNA gene showed the presence of seven different genera distributed into four groups, the genus Bacillus, followed by Paenibacillus (20%), Burkholderia (14%), Herbaspirillum (6%), Pseudomonas (6%), Methylobacterium (6%), and Brevibacillus (3%). The molecular characterization of endophytic isolates from sugarcane revealed a diversity of bacteria colonizing this plant, with a possible biotechnological potential to be used as inoculant and biofertilizers

Defatted nannochloropsis oculata biomass: waste or resource?

Microalgae are recognized as a valuable source of a panoply of compounds. In addition to the extensively investigated lipid fraction comprising polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), microalgae biomass also encompasses other compounds with potentially relevant biological activities. This work innovatively repurposes the defatted biomass (DB) of Nannochloropsis oculata, highlighting its potential value beyond the lipid fraction. By subjecting the DB to enzymatic hydrolysis, we explored an underutilized resource, potentially reducing waste and promoting sustainable bioprocessing. The resulting soluble fraction was chemically characterized and a comprehensive assessment of its chemical and biological activities was performed to ascertain its potential applications. Those included antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, and antidiabetic capacities, as well as potential metabolic inhibition, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. The chemical characterization revealed the presence of several low molecular weight peptides (<1.2 kDa), as well as polysaccharides. The DB exhibited a relevant antioxidant capacity of 3.15 μmolTrolox equivalent(TE)/mgfreeze-dried biomass(FDB) and an IC50 of 77.3 ± 0.3 μgprotein/mL concerning angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory activity, while α-glucosidase activity was inhibited by 19.4 %. Biological activities revealed no relevant inhibition of metabolic activity, an immunosuppression potential and anti-inflammatory activity (decreased expression of all pro-inflammatory cytokines in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation) was also observed. Moreover, significant antimicrobial activity was observed, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria. These results underscored the potential of the DB to be utilized within a biorefinery concept, thereby transforming it into a resource (co-product) rather than considering it as waste. This study is groundbreaking due to its integrative approach, being the first to report the potential bioactivities of non-lipid extracts from N. oculata cultivated under modulated stress conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) : a model organism for assessing multi-level responses to estrogenic chemicals in marine surface waters

Resumo apresentado sob poster ao 5th International Symposium of Fish Endocrinology, CAstellon, Spain, Setember 5-9, 2004.There is growing concern that aquatic wildlife in surface waters of the European Union is exposed to natural and man-made chemicals that have the ability to mimic estrogens and lead to reproductive dysfunction. Estrogenic responses in fish are the net result of complex chains of events involving the uptake, distribution and metabolism of test agents until they interact with their target sites. Typically these aspects cannot be modelled in short-term cell-based assays, only studies with vertebrates offer the opportunity to assess potential interactions of test compounds at higher organisational levels. The most widely studied biological response in fish to environmental estrogens is the production of vitellogenin (Vtg). However, few studies have attempted to link this endpoint with effects on xenobiotic biotransformation enzymes and genotoxic responses. This work is part of a study focusing on the combination effects of mixtures of estrogenic chemicals in marine and freshwater organisms. As test organism the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was selected, a common species in European marine systems. Juveniles were exposed under a flow-through system for 14 days to the natural estrogen 17ß-estradiol and ethynylestradiol. Actual chemical concentrations in the water-column were determined by gas chromatography with ion trap detection. Effects at subcellular level were analysed using Vtg as a reference endpoint [1]. Its relevance is evaluated by further investigations on liver 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities [2]. These measurements were integrated with organism level endpoints (i.e. condition factor, hepatossomatic index) to provide evidence for cause-effect of estrogenic contamination. The general suitability of the sea bass as a model organism for the screening of estrogenic chemicals in the marine environment is discussed.Comissão Europeia (CE) - ACE, EVK1-CT-2001-100
