Sink or swim : on associative structuring in longer Latvian folksongs

The oral tradition of Latvian lyrical folksongs, or dainas, began to be recorded at the beginning of the last century and is currently available in both the printed and the electronic media. These songs are in octosyllabic blank verse divided by a caesura, and the overwhelming majority of them follow a trochaic meter, the rest being dactylic.1 The classical source is the collection of 217,996 text versions classified and published by Krisjanis Barons (Barons and Visendorfs 1894-1915), in which a "song" is typically presented as a brief, epigrammatic quatrain unit, with barely 10[percent] of the material consisting of texts longer than eight lines. The same system of text identification was adopted in the supplement to this corpus published by Peateris Smits (1936-39) and in the Daina Data Base (1982), a transcription of a 12-volume collection incorporating the essential elements of both these primary sources (Svabe et al. 1952-56).Not

This study assessed the relationship between students’ growth goals and perceived opportunities to achieve these goals in Latvia and the perceived support from the university and the mesosystem. Socialization models emphasize that the setting of personal goals occurs in continuous interaction with the sociocultural context, which includes perceived opportunities to achieve these goals and the interpersonal environment. Both – perceived support from close people (mesosystems) and perceived support from the university – are significant for students. The study involved 432 university students between 18 and 49. We have assessed the extent to which students’ goals regarding education, work, and personal growth are predicted by perceived opportunities to achieve these goals in Latvia and by the perceived support from parents, relatives, friends, classmates, teachers, and the university as an institution. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that personal growth goals are positively predicted by all three elements - the perceived opportunities to achieve these goals and the perceived academic and mesosystem support. The support of the classmates was connected to the support of the mesosystem that indicates the importance of friendly relations among students. Students’ growth goals were the most closely associated with the perceived support in their specific environment – the university. In general, the results confirm the complex interaction of personal growth goals with the social and cultural environment in particular circumstances

The aim of the present study was to analyse the effectiveness of myofascial self-release methods and the use of the tool in the development of strength indicators in the tibia extensor muscles. Instrumental assessment of muscle function was performed on a REV 9000, Technogymᴿ, Italy. The subjects of our study were twenty healthy fitness athletes aged between 20 and 23 years. A set of strength exercises was developed, consisting of 10 exercises focused on increasing the muscle strength of tibia extensor muscles. For the experimental group self-massage with a roller was applied. When applying strength-development exercises with a set of self-release, the dynamics of maximum strength results are as follows: the force balance of the dominant and the non-dominant leg in the control group before (p=0.001) and after (p=0.02) the experiment, and in the experimental group before (p=0.01) and after (p=0.02) the experiment remained unchanged – no significant changes were observed in the results between the groups; - positive dynamics in strength changes were observed for the dominant leg between the control group (p=0.08) and the experimental group (p=0.37) before and after the experiment. The positive increase in the results is in favour of the experimental group, although there are no significant statistical differences in the results of the control group. On the other hand, no differences in the strength dynamics of the non-dominant leg were found.

The European Isotope Separation On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam project (EURISOL) is set to design the 'next-generation' European Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility. It will extend and amplify current research on nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and fundamental interactions beyond the year 2010. In EURISOL, four target stations are foreseen, three direct targets of approximately 100 kW of beam power and one multi-MW target assembly, all driven by a high-power particle accelerator. In this high power target station, high-intensity RIBs of neutron-rich isotopes will be obtained by inducing fission in several actinide targets surrounding a liquid metal spallation neutron source. This article summarises the work carried out within Task 2 of the EURISOL Design Study, with special attention to the coupled neutronics of the mercury proton-to-neutron converter and the fission targets. The overall performance of the facility, which will sustain fast neutron fluxes of the order of 1014 n/cm2/s, is evaluated, together with the production of radionuclides in the actinide targets, showing that the targeted 1015 fissions/s can be achieved. Some of the greatest challenges in the design of high power spallation sources are the high power densities, entailing large structural stresses, and the heat removal, requiring detailed thermo-hydraulic calculations. The use of a thin martensitic steel beam-window and a well-controlled mercury flow has been shown to reduce the von-Misses stress in the former below the 200 MPa limit, with reasonable maximum flow rates of ~6 m/s. Alternatively, a windowless target configuration has been proposed, based on a liquid mercury transverse film. With this design, higher power densities and fission rates may be achieved, avoiding the technical difficulties related to the beam window. Experimentally, several tests have been performed at IPUL (Riga, Latvia) in order to study the stability of the liquid metal flow and validate the mercury loop design

The integral equation approach to kinematic dynamo theory and its application to dynamo experiments in cylindrical geometry

The conventional magnetic induction equation that governs hydromagnetic dynamo action is transformed into an equivalent integral equation system. An advantage of this approach is that the computational domain is restricted to the region occupied by the electrically conducting fluid and to its boundary. This integral equation approach is first employed to simulate kinematic dynamos excited by Beltrami-like flows in a finite cylinder. The impact of externally added layers around the cylinder on the onset of dynamo actions is investigated. Then it is applied to simulate dynamo experiments within cylindrical geometry including the von Karman sodium (VKS) experiment and the Riga dynamo experiment. A modified version of this approach is utilized to investigate magnetic induction effects under the influence of externally applied magnetic fields which is also important to measure the proximity of a given dynamo facility to the self-excitation threshold.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure

Neviens no izvēlētajiem praimiem neietekmēja patērētāju uzvedību. Tomēr vāju ietekmi uzrādīja iejaukšanās uzdevums. Netika gūts apstiprinājums, ka iejaukšanās uzdevums mediē praimošanu, tas iedarbojās neatkarīgi. Rezultāti norāda, ka patērētāju uzvedību vienkāršs praima stimuls neietekmē vai ietekmē ļoti nelielā mērā. Atslēgas vārdi: praims, praimings, patērētāju uzvedība, dinamisko sistēmu modelis. There are no comparative studies on the priming of consumer behavior in audio, visual, and semantic modality. The aim of the study was to find out whether the priming of consumers through different modalities affects their buying behavior. Three studies were carried out to collect data: a pilot study (participated 125 respondents) experiment No. 1 (203 respondents) and experiment No. 2 (56 respondents). The experiments were manipulated with four primes in three modalities, with and without intervening task. None of the selected primes affected consumer behavior. However, the intervening task showed a weak effect. There was no evidence that the intervening task mediated priming, it acted independently. The results show that consumer behavior by a simple prime stimulus is not affected or is affected to a very small extent. Keywords: prime, priming, consumer behavior, the dynamic system model
