Excited D-brane decay in Cubic String Field Theory and in Bosonic String Theory
In the cubic string field theory, using the gauge invariant operators
corresponding to the on-shell closed string vertex operators, we have
explicitly evaluated the decay amplitudes of two open string tachyons or gauge
fields to one closed string tachyon or graviton up to level two. We then
evaluated the same amplitudes in the bosonic string theory, and shown that the
amplitudes in both theories have exactly the same pole structure. We have also
expanded the decay amplitudes in the bosonic string theory around the
Mandelstam variable s=0, and shown that their leading contact terms are fully
consistent with a tachyonic Dirac-Born-Infeld action which includes both open
string and closed string tachyon.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, v3; references added, some words about contact terms

Cosmic microwave background and large scale structure limits on the interaction between dark matter and baryons
We study the effect on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy and
large scale structure (LSS) power spectrum of a scattering interaction between
cold dark matter and baryons. This scattering alters the CMB anisotropy and LSS
spectrum through momentum transfer between the cold dark matter particles and
the baryons. We find that current CMB observations can put an upper limit on
the scattering cross section which is comparable with or slightly stronger than
previous disk heating constraints at masses greater than 1 GeV, and much
stronger at smaller masses. When large-scale structure constraints are added to
the CMB limits, our constraint is more stringent than this previous limit at
all masses. In particular, a dark matter-baryon scattering cross section
comparable to the ``Spergel-Steinhardt'' cross section is ruled out for dark
matter mass greater than 1 GeV.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, use RevTeX4, submitted to PRD replaced with

Constructions of generalized complex structures in dimension four
Four-manifold theory is employed to study the existence of (twisted)
generalized complex structures. It is shown that there exist (twisted)
generalized complex structures that have more than one type change loci. In an
example-driven fashion, (twisted) generalized complex structures are
constructed on a myriad of four-manifolds, both simply and non-simply
connected, which are neither complex nor symplectic
Unified dark energy models : a phenomenological approach
A phenomenological approach is proposed to the problem of universe
accelerated expansion and of the dark energy nature. A general class of models
is introduced whose energy density depends on the redshift in such a way
that a smooth transition among the three main phases of the universe evolution
(radiation era, matter domination, asymptotical de Sitter state) is naturally
achieved. We use the estimated age of the universe, the Hubble diagram of Type
Ia Supernovae and the angular size - redshift relation for compact and
ultracompact radio structures to test whether the model is in agreement with
astrophysical observation and to constrain its main parameters. Although
phenomenologically motivated, the model may be straightforwardly interpreted as
a two fluids scenario in which the quintessence is generated by a suitably
chosen scalar field potential. On the other hand, the same model may also be
read in the context of unified dark energy models or in the framework of
modified Friedmann equation theories.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review
D3/D7 Inflationary Model and M-theory
A proposal is made for a cosmological D3/D7 model with a constant magnetic
flux along the D7 world-volume. It describes an N=2 gauge model with
Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and the potential of the hybrid P-term inflation. The
motion of the D3-brane towards D7 in a phase with spontaneously broken
supersymmetry provides a period of slow-roll inflation in the de Sitter valley,
the role of the inflaton being played by the distance between D3 and D7-branes.
After tachyon condensation a supersymmetric ground state is formed: a D3/D7
bound state corresponding to an Abelian non-linear (non-commutative) instanton.
In this model the existence of a non-vanishing cosmological constant is
associated with the resolution of the instanton singularity. We discuss a
possible embedding of this model into a compactified M-theory setup.Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX; v2, minor typos corrected, one reference

Cosmological model with interactions in the dark sector
A cosmological model is proposed for the current Universe consisted of
non-interacting baryonic matter and interacting dark components. The dark
energy and dark matter are coupled through their effective barotropic indexes,
which are considered as functions of the ratio between their energy densities.
It is investigated two cases where the ratio is asymptotically stable and their
parameters are adjusted by considering best fits to Hubble function data. It is
shown that the deceleration parameter, the densities parameters, and the
luminosity distance have the correct behavior which is expected for a viable
present scenario of the Universe.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Coupled dark matter-dark energy in light of near Universe observations
Cosmological analysis based on currently available observations are unable to
rule out a sizeable coupling among the dark energy and dark matter fluids. We
explore a variety of coupled dark matter-dark energy models, which satisfy
cosmic microwave background constraints, in light of low redshift and near
universe observations. We illustrate the phenomenology of different classes of
dark coupling models, paying particular attention in distinguishing between
effects that appear only on the expansion history and those that appear in the
growth of structure. We find that while a broad class of dark coupling models
are effectively models where general relativity (GR) is modified --and thus can
be probed by a combination of tests for the expansion history and the growth of
structure--, there is a class of dark coupling models where gravity is still
GR, but the growth of perturbations is, in principle modified. While this
effect is small in the specific models we have considered, one should bear in
mind that an inconsistency between reconstructed expansion history and growth
may not uniquely indicate deviations from GR. Our low redshift constraints
arise from cosmic velocities, redshift space distortions and dark matter
abundance in galaxy voids. We find that current data constrain the
dimensionless coupling to be |xi|<0.2, but prospects from forthcoming data are
for a significant improvement. Future, precise measurements of the Hubble
constant, combined with high-precision constraints on the growth of structure,
could provide the key to rule out dark coupling models which survive other
tests. We shall exploit as well weak equivalence principle violation arguments,
which have the potential to highly disfavour a broad family of coupled models.Comment: 34 pages, 6 figures; changes to match published versio
Particle Physics Approach to Dark Matter
We review the main proposals of particle physics for the composition of the
cold dark matter in the universe. Strong axion contribution to cold dark matter
is not favored if the Peccei-Quinn field emerges with non-zero value at the end
of inflation and the inflationary scale is superheavy since, under these
circumstances, it leads to unacceptably large isocurvature perturbations. The
lightest neutralino is the most popular candidate constituent of cold dark
matter. Its relic abundance in the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard
model can be reduced to acceptable values by pole annihilation of neutralinos
or neutralino-stau coannihilation. Axinos can also contribute to cold dark
matter provided that the reheat temperature is adequately low. Gravitinos can
constitute the cold dark matter only in limited regions of the parameter space.
We present a supersymmetric grand unified model leading to violation of Yukawa
unification and, thus, allowing an acceptable b-quark mass within the
constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model with mu>0. The model
possesses a wide range of parameters consistent with the data on the cold dark
matter abundance as well as other phenomenological constraints. Also, it leads
to a new version of shifted hybrid inflation.Comment: 32 pages including 6 figures, uses svmult.cls, some clarifications

The Formation of Cosmic Structures in a Light Gravitino Dominated Universe
We analyse the formation of cosmic structures in models where the dark matter
is dominated by light gravitinos with mass of eV -- 1 keV, as predicted
by gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking models. After evaluating the
number of degrees of freedom at the gravitinos decoupling (), we compute
the transfer function for matter fluctuations and show that gravitinos behave
like warm dark matter (WDM) with free-streaming scale comparable to the galaxy
mass scale. We consider different low-density variants of the WDM model, both
with and without cosmological constant, and compare the predictions on the
abundances of neutral hydrogen within high-redshift damped Ly-- systems
and on the number density of local galaxy clusters with the corresponding
observational constraints. We find that none of the models satisfies both
constraints at the same time, unless a rather small value (\mincir
0.4) and a rather large Hubble parameter (\magcir 0.9) is assumed.
Furthermore, in a model with warm + hot dark matter, with hot component
provided by massive neutrinos, the strong suppression of fluctuation on scales
of \sim 1\hm precludes the formation of high-redshift objects, when the
low-- cluster abundance is required. We conclude that all different variants
of a light gravitino DM dominated model show strong difficulties for what
concerns cosmic structure formation.
This gives a severe cosmological constraint on the gauge-mediated SUSY
breaking scheme.Comment: 28 pages,Latex, submitted for publication to Phys.Rev.
Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
application as distance indicators.Comment: Review article, 63 pages (28 figures), Accepted for publication in
