Mechanisms of Resistance to RAF Inhibitors in Melanoma

    Get PDF
The recent RAF inhibitor trial with PLX4032/RG7204 in late-stage mutant B-RAF melanoma patients has been lauded as a success story for personalized cancer therapy since short-term clinical responses were observed in the majority of patients. However, initial responses were followed by subsequent tumor re-growth, and a subset of patients showed intrinsic resistance. Bi-directional translational efforts are now essential to determine the mechanisms underlying acquired/secondary and intrinsic resistance to RAF inhibitors

The effect of Kaon Condensation on Quark-Antiquark Condensate in Dense Matter

Assuming that at sufficiently high densities the constituent quarks become relevant degrees of freedom, we study within the framework of a chiral quark model the influence of s-wave K−K^- condensation on the quark-antiquark condensates. We find that, in linear density approximation, the presence of a K−K^- condensate quenches the uˉu\bar{u}u condensate, but that the dˉd\bar{d}d condensate remains unaffected up to the chiral order under consideration. We discuss the implication of the suppressed uˉu\bar{u}u condensate for flavor-dependent chiral symmetry restoration in dense matterComment: 17 pages, 3 figures, two subsections are removed. Evidence for He I 10830 \AA~ absorption during the transit of a warm Neptune around the M-dwarf GJ 3470 with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder

Understanding the dynamics and kinematics of out-flowing atmospheres of hot and warm exoplanets is crucial to understanding the origins and evolutionary history of the exoplanets near the evaporation desert. Recently, ground based measurements of the meta-stable Helium atom's resonant absorption at 10830 \AA~has become a powerful probe of the base environment which is driving the outflow of exoplanet atmospheres. We report evidence for the He I 10830 \AA~in absorption (equivalent width ∼\sim 0.012±0.0020.012 \pm 0.002 \AA) in the exosphere of a warm Neptune orbiting the M-dwarf GJ 3470, during three transits using the Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF) near infrared spectrograph. This marks the first reported evidence for He I 10830 \AA\, atmospheric absorption for a planet orbiting an M-dwarf. Our detected absorption is broad and its blueshifted wing extends to -36 km/sec, the largest reported in the literature to date. We modelled the state of Helium atoms in the exosphere of GJ3470b based on assumptions on the UV and X-ray flux of GJ 3470, and found our measurement of flux-weighted column density of meta-stable state Helium (NHe32S=2.4×1010cm−2)(N_{He^2_3S} = 2.4 \times 10^{10} \mathrm{cm^{-2}}), derived from our transit observations, to be consistent with model, within its uncertainties. The methodology developed here will be useful to study and constrain the atmospheric outflow models of other exoplanets like GJ 3470b which are near the edge of the evaporation desert.Comment: Accepted in Ap

    Pluralism about Knowledge

In this paper I consider the prospects for pluralism about knowledge, that is, the view that there is a plurality of knowledge relations. After a brief overview of some views that entail a sort of pluralism about knowledge, I focus on a particular kind of knowledge pluralism I call standards pluralism. Put roughly, standards pluralism is the view that one never knows anything simpliciter. Rather, one knows by this-or-that epistemic standard. Because there is a plurality of epistemic standards, there is a plurality of knowledge relations. In §1 I argue that one can construct an impressive case for standards pluralism. In §2 I clarify the relationship between standards pluralism, epistemic contextualism and epistemic relativism. In §3 I argue that standards pluralism faces a serious objection. The gist of the objection is that standards pluralism is incompatible with plausible claims about the normative role of knowledge. In §4 I finish by sketching the form that a standards pluralist response to this objection might take
