The many assembly histories of massive void galaxies as revealed by integral field spectroscopy
We present the first detailed integral field spectroscopy study of nine central void galaxies with M*>10Âčâ°MÊ using the Wide Field Spectrograph to determine how a range of assembly histories manifest themselves in the current day Universe.While the majority of these galaxies are evolving secularly, we find a range of morphologies, merger histories and stellar population distributions, though similarly low Hα-derived star formation rates (10Âčâ°MÊ have similarly low star formation rates
Implementing an intervention designed to enhance service user involvement in mental health care planning: A qualitative process evaluation
Purpose Shared decision-making (SDM) and the wider elements of intersecting professional and lay practices are seen as necessary components in the implementation of mental health interventions. A randomised controlled trial of a user- and carer-informed training package in the United Kingdom to enhance SDM in care planning in secondary mental health care settings showed no effect on patient-level outcomes. This paper reports on the parallel process evaluation to establish the influences on implementation at service user, carer, mental health professional and organisational levels. Methods A longitudinal, qualitative process evaluation incorporating 134 semi-structured interviews with 54 mental health service users, carers and professionals was conducted. Interviews were undertaken at baseline and repeated at 6 and 12 months post-intervention. Interviews were digitally audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Results The process evaluation demonstrated that despite buy-in from those delivering care planning in mental health services, there was a failure of training to become embedded and normalised in local provision. This was due to a lack of organisational readiness to accept change combined with an underestimation and lack of investment in the amount and range of relational work required to successfully enact the intervention. Conclusions Future aspirations of SDM enactment need to place the circumstances and everyday practices of stakeholders at the centre of implementation. Such studies should consider the historical and current context of health care relationships and include elements which seek to address these directly
Clostridium difficile infection after cardiac surgery: Prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and resource utilization
ObjectiveDespite increasing efforts to prevent infection, the prevalence of hospital-associated Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) is increasing. Heightened awareness prompted this study of the prevalence and morbidity associated with CDI after cardiac surgery.MethodsA total of 22,952 patients underwent cardiac surgery at Cleveland Clinic from January 2005 to January 2011. CDI was diagnosed by enzyme immunoassay for toxins and, more recently, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Hospital outcomes and long-term survival were compared with those of the remaining population in propensity-matched groups.ResultsOne hundred forty-five patients (0.63%) tested positive for CDI at a median of 9 days postoperatively, 135 by enzyme immunoassay and 11 by PCR. Its prevalence more than doubled over the study period. Seventy-seven patients (48%) were transfers from outside hospitals. Seventy-three patients (50%) were exposed preoperatively to antibiotics and 79 (56%) to proton-pump inhibitors. Patients with CDI had more baseline comorbidities, more reoperations, and received more blood products than patients who did not have CDI. Presenting symptoms included diarrhea (107; 75%), distended abdomen (48; 34%), and abdominal pain (27; 19%). All were treated with metronidazole or vancomycin. Sixteen patients (11%) died in hospital, including 5 of 10 who developed toxic colitis; 3 of 4 undergoing total colectomy survived. Among matched patients, those with CDI had more septicemia (PÂ <Â .0001), renal failure (PÂ =Â .0002), reoperations (PÂ <Â .0001), prolonged postoperative ventilation (PÂ <Â .0001), longer hospital stay (PÂ <Â .0001), and lower 3-year survival, 52% versus 64% (P = .03), than patients who did not have CDI.ConclusionsAlthough rare, the prevalence of CDI is increasing, contributing importantly to morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery. A quantitative study of O stars in NGC2244 and the Mon OB2 association
Our goal is to determine the stellar and wind properties of seven O stars in
the cluster NGC2244 and three O stars in the OB association MonOB2. These
properties give us insight into the mass loss rates of O stars, allow us to
check the validity of rotational mixing in massive stars, and to better
understand the effects of the ionizing flux and wind mechanical energy release
on the surrounding interstellar medium and its influence on triggered star
formation. We collect optical and UV spectra of the target stars which are
analyzed by means of atmosphere models computed with the code CMFGEN. The
spectra of binary stars are disentangled and the components are studied
separately. All stars have an evolutionary age less than 5 million years, with
the most massive stars being among the youngest. Nitrogen surface abundances
show no clear relation with projected rotational velocities. Binaries and
single stars show the same range of enrichment. This is attributed to the youth
and/or wide separation of the binary systems in which the components have not
(yet) experienced strong interaction. A clear trend of larger enrichment in
higher luminosity objects is observed, consistent with what evolutionary models
with rotation predict for a population of O stars at a given age. We confirm
the weakness of winds in late O dwarfs. In general, mass loss rates derived
from UV lines are lower than mass loss rates obtained from Ha. The UV mass loss
rates are even lower than the single line driving limit in the latest type
dwarfs. These issues are discussed in the context of the structure of massive
stars winds. The evolutionary and spectroscopic masses are in agreement above
25 Msun but the uncertainties are large. Below this threshold, the few
late-type O stars studied here indicate that the mass discrepancy still seems

The Massive Progenitor of the Possible Type II-Linear Supernova 2009hd in Messier 66
We present observations of SN2009hd in the nearby galaxy M66. This SN is one
of the closest to us in recent years but heavily obscured by dust, rendering it
unusually faint in the optical, given its proximity. We find that the observed
properties of SN2009hd support its classification as a possible Type II-L SN, a
relatively rare subclass of CC-SNe. High-precision relative astrometry has been
employed to attempt to identify a SN progenitor candidate, based on a
pixel-by-pixel comparison between HST F555W and F814W images of the SN site
prior to explosion and at late times. A progenitor candidate is identified in
the F814W images only; this object is undetected in F555W. Significant
uncertainty exists in the astrometry, such that we cannot definitively identify
this object as the SN progenitor. Via insertion of artificial stars into the
pre-SN HST images, we are able to constrain the progenitor's properties to
those of a possible supergiant, with M(F555W)0>-7.6 mag and (V-I) 0>0.99 mag.
The magnitude and color limits are consistent with a luminous RSG; however,
they also allow for the possibility that the star could have been more yellow
than red. From a comparison with theoretical massive-star evolutionary tracks,
which include rotation and pulsationally enhanced mass loss, we can place a
conservative upper limit on the initial mass for the progenitor of <20 M_sun.
If the actual mass of the progenitor is near the upper range allowed by our
derived mass limit, then it would be consistent with that for the identified
progenitors of the SNII-L 2009kr and the high-luminosity SNII-P 2008cn. The
progenitors of these three SNe may possibly bridge the gap between lower-mass
RSG that explode as SNeII-P and LBV, or more extreme RSG, from which the more
exotic SNeII-n may arise. Very late-time imaging of the SN2009hd site may

Atmospheric parameters and rotational velocities for a sample of Galactic B-type supergiants
High resolution optical spectra of 57 Galactic B-type supergiant stars have
been analyzed to determine their rotational and macroturbulent velocities. In
addition, their atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity
and microturbulent velocity) and surface nitrogen abundances have been
estimated using a non-LTE grid of model atmospheres. Comparisons of the
projected rotational velocities have been made with the predictions of stellar
evolutionary models and in general good agreement was found. However for a
small number of targets, their observed rotational velocities were
significantly larger than predicted, although their nitrogen abundances were
consistent with the rest of the sample. We conclude that binarity may have
played a role in generating their large rotational velocities. No correlation
was found between nitrogen abundances and the current projected rotational
velocities. However a correlation was found with the inferred projected
rotational velocities of the main sequence precursors of our supergiant sample.
This correlation is again in agreement with the predictions of single star
evolutionary models that incorporate rotational mixing. The origin of the
macroturbulent and microturbulent velocity fields is discussed and our results
support previous theoretical studies that link the former to sub-photospheric
convection and the latter to non-radial gravity mode oscillations. In addition,
we have attempted to identify differential rotation in our most rapidly

A collaboratively produced model of service design for children and young people with common mental health problems
Background: Little is known about the effectiveness of, and implementation complexities associated with, service delivery models for children and young people (CYP) experiencing âcommonâ mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, behavioural difficulties and self-harm. This paper outlines how a model for high-quality service design for this population group was developed by identifying available services, their effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and acceptability, and the barriers and enablers to access. Methods: Sequential, mixed-methods design, combining evidence syntheses (scoping and integrative reviews of the international literature) with primary research (a collective case study in England and Wales). Data from these two elements were collaboratively synthesised in a subsequent model-building phase. Results: The scoping review yielded a service model typology. The integrative review found effectiveness evidence only for four models: collaborative care (the only service model to also have cost-effectiveness evidence), outreach approaches, brief intervention services and an organisational framework called âAvailability, Responsiveness and Continuityâ. No service model seemed more acceptable than others. Three case study themes were identified: pathways to support; service engagement; and learning and understanding. The model-building phase identified rapid access, learning self-care skills, individualised support, clear information, compassionate and competent staff and aftercare planning as core characteristics of high-quality services. These characteristics were underpinned by four organisational qualities: values that respect confidentiality; engagement and involvement; collaborative relationships; and a learning culture. Conclusions: A consistent organisational evidence-base for service design and delivery in CYPâs mental health spanning many years appears to have had little impact on service provision in England and Wales. Rather than impose â often inflexible and untested â specific local or national models or frameworks, those commissioning, designing and delivering mental health services for CYP should (re)focus on already known, fundamental components necessary for high-quality services. These fundamental components have been integrated into a collaboratively produced general model of service design for CYP with common mental health problems. While this general model is primarily focused on British service provision, it is broad enough to have utility for international audiences
Biogeochemical properties and transports in the North East Atlantic
The eastern subpolar North Atlantic is a source of nutrients to the Northwest European Shelf and Arctic; however, biogeochemical transports in this important region are unknown. We examine variability in nutrients and carbon at the eastern boundary of the subpolar North Atlantic between 2017 and 2020, and calculate their transport by a branch of the North Atlantic Current and the European Slope Current. By combining observations from moorings and ship-based surveys, we derive novel biogeochemical property transports at high temporal resolution. Data from 63 m provide new evidence of a strong seasonal signal with silicate declining between April and May (â2.3 ÎŒmol kgâ1) and a concurrent increase in pH (0.04) and oxygen saturation (3.5%). Additionally, pH and oxygen saturation show a secondary peak in October during the autumn bloom. Biogeochemical transports are northwards and highly variable with volume transport dominating the variability over a multi-annual timescale. However, historical data suggests that nitrate and phosphate transports were 15% and 19% lower respectively in the late 2000s when the subpolar gyre circulation was weaker and lower nutrient source waters were dominant. These changes may have been amplified by concurrent reductions in volume transport. Changes in carbon and nutrient transports in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic may propagate downstream with potential effects on the Northwest European Shelf and Eurasian Arctic
How healthy and affordable are foods and beverages sold in school canteens? A cross-sectional study comparing menus from Victorian primary schools
Abstract
Objective:
Government policy guidance in Victoria, Australia, encourages schools to provide affordable, healthy foods in canteens. This study analysed the healthiness and price of items available in canteens in Victorian primary schools and associations with school characteristics.
Design:
Dietitians classified menu items (main, snack and beverage) using the red, amber and green traffic light system defined in the Victorian governmentâs School Canteens and Other School Food Services Policy. This system also included a black category for confectionary and high sugar content soft drinks which should not be supplied. Descriptive statistics and regressions were used to analyse differences in the healthiness and price of main meals, snacks and beverages offered, according to school remoteness, sector (government and Catholic/independent) size, and socio-economic position.

A convenience sample of canteen menus drawn from three previous obesity prevention studies in forty-eight primary schools between 2016 and 2019.
Results:
On average, school canteen menus were 21 % âgreenâ (most healthy â everyday), 53 % âamberâ (select carefully), 25 % âredâ (occasional) and 2 % âblackâ (banned) items, demonstrating low adherence with government guidelines. âBlackâ items were more common in schools in regional population centres. âRedâ main meal items were cheaper than âgreenâ% âblackâ (banned) items, demonstrating low adherence with government guidelines. âBlackâ items were more common in schools in regional population centres. âRedâ main meal items were cheaper than âgreenâ (mean difference â0·91 (â1·27, â0·57)) main meal items. In about 50 % of schools, the mean price of âredâ main meal, beverages and snack items were cheaper than âgreenâ items, or no âgreenâ alternative items were offered.
Conclusion:
In this sample of Victorian canteen menus, there was no evidence of associations of healthiness and pricing by school characteristics except for regional centres having the highest proportion of âblackâ (banned) items compared with all other remoteness categories examined. There was low adherence with state canteen menu guidelines. Many schools offered a high proportion of âredâ food options and âblackâ (banned) options, particularly in regional centres. Unhealthier options were cheaper than healthy options. More needs to be done to bring Victorian primary school canteen menus in line with guidelines
