Remote Monitoring of a Dark Matter Detector Power Supply

    Get PDF
Detecting and understanding the nature of dark matter, matter which does not interact with light, is one of the biggest challenges facing physics today. The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS), located two kilometers underground at SNOLAB, utilizes extremely sensitive detectors kept at very low temperatures to search for dark matter. The direct detection of dark matter is aided by building experiments deep underground, with the challenges of accessing the SuperCDMS experiment at its location in SNOLAB necessitating remote monitoring. This thesis details the development of a program to remotely monitor the health of the SuperCDMS dark matter detectors’ uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The program was written in Python and utilizes several libraries to access information from the UPS webpage and determine whether a power failure has occurred. Further development is underway to connect the program to an online database and trigger an alarm in the case of power failure. Options for future UPS monitoring upgrades are described

Time-dependent gravity in southern California, May 1974 - Apr 1979

Gravity measurements were coordinated with the long baseline three dimensional geodetic measurements of the Astronomical Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying project which used radio interferometry with extra-galactic radio sources. Gravity data from 28 of the stations had a single reading standard deviation of 11 microgal which gives a relative single determination between stations a standard deviation of 16 microgal. The largest gravity variation observed, 80 microgal, correlated with nearby waterwell variations and with smoothed rainfall. Smoothed rainfall data appeared to be a good indicator of the qualitative response of gravity to changing groundwater levels at other suprasediment stations, but frequent measurement of gravity at a station was essential until the quantitative calibration of the station's response to groundwater variations was accomplished

Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Programming at Overnight Summer Camps

Overnight summer camps have previously been overlooked as settings for healthy eating and physical activity programming; however, recent summer camp research has begun to examine how summer camp programming can help fight childhood obesity. The purpose of this research was to identify and examine the efforts that Wisconsin overnight summer camps are taking to support campers in meeting national dietary and physical activity guidelines. Data were collected through in-person or phone interviews with 13 directors and owners of American Camp Association (ACA) accredited camps and were analyzed using a conventional content analysis and inductive thematic analysis approach. Results indicated that camp directors are trying to provide, or are already providing, healthy food that follows the national dietary recommendations and that campers who attend these overnight summer camps in Wisconsin are meeting or exceeding the national physical activity recommendations. Camp directors reported that their campers were physically active because of the amount of walking each camper had to complete in order to get from one activity to another (often across the camp property), in addition to their participation in a variety of program activities. Overnight summer camps are an ideal setting for the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity for children

Single point incremental forming of polymers

    Get PDF
AbstractThe aim of the present paper is to evaluate the possibility of producing low-cost, small-batch, polymer sheet components by means of single point incremental forming (SPIF) at room temperature. During the research work, five different thermoplastic materials were incrementally formed into cones with an increasing wall angle on a conventional CNC milling machine. In designed experiments, significant process parameters were found, and influential material properties were identified. The experimental results confirm that SPIF of commercial polymer sheets at room temperature has potential for the manufacture of complex parts with very high depths
