Understanding Opportunities in Social Entrepreneurship: A Critical Realist Abstraction

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. This paper extends social entrepreneurship (SE) research by drawing upon a critical realist perspective to analyse dynamic structure/agency relations in SE opportunity emergence, illustrated by empirical evidence. Our findings demonstrate an agential aspect (opportunity actualisation following a path-dependent seeding-growing-shaping process) and a structural aspect (institutional, cognitive and embedded structures necessary for SE opportunity emergence) related to SE opportunities. These structures provide three boundary conditions for SE agency: institutional discrimination, an SE belief system and social feasibility. Within this paper, we develop a novel theoretical framework to analyse SE opportunities plus, an applicable tool to advance related empirical research

A simple hypergraph min cut algorithm

    Get PDF
We present an algorithm for finding the minimum cut of an edge-weighted hypergraph. It is simple in every respect. It has a short and compact description, is easy to implement and has a surprisingly simple proof of correctness. The runtime is O(jV j 2 log jV j+jV j \Delta jjEjj) where jjEjj is the sum of the cardinalities of the hyperedges

The Revenue Online System: Factors Influencing Adoption

    Get PDF
This paper describes an ongoing study into the quality of service provided by the Irish Revenue Commisioners’ on-line tax filing and collection system. The Irish Revenue On-Line Service (ROS) site has won several awards. In this study, a version of the widely used SERVQUAL measuring instrument, adapted for use with on-line services, has been modified for the specific case of ROS. The theory behind this instrument is set out, the particular problems of evaluating revenue collecting on-line are examined and the rationale for this approach is explaine

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF LECTURERS’ ASSESSMENTS: A CASE OF UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST, GHANA

    Get PDF
Assessment approaches employed by lecturers in higher education institutions play a significant role in the quality of teaching and learning. While instructors see the goals of the curriculum as basics for school assessments, learners have their own perception of assessments which shape their future learning activities. This study aimed at examining students’ perception of lecturers’ assessments at the University of Cape Coast. An explanatory sequential design was adopted by first selecting 830 students through a multi-stage sampling procedure and later, randomly sampled 12 students to be interviewed based on the quantitative results. A standardised questionnaire called “Students’ Perception of Assessment Questionnaire” (SPAQ) was adapted and used to gather the survey data. An interview guide was employed to collect the qualitative data. Students were of the view that assessments in their institution are congruent with their learning activities. Further analysis discovered that assessments in the university, as perceived by the students, failed to reflect the activities of the world of work. Conclusions and recommendations were outlined based on the outcome of the study. Article visualizations

03-06 "Free Trade, Corn, and the Environment: Environmental Impacts of US – Mexico Corn Trade Under NAFTA"

    Get PDF
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) had a profound impact on corn trade between the United States and Mexico. Negotiated tariff reductions and the Mexican government’s decision not to charge some tariffs to which it was entitled resulted in a doubling of US corn exports to Mexico. This paper examines the environmental implications of this change on both sides of the border.

Suicide Within United States Jails: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-synthesis

    Get PDF
Suicide was the leading cause of unnatural deaths in local jails, accounting for 29% of all jail deaths between 2000 and 2007. Though much literature exists on suicide in jails, very little is qualitative. Additionally, little attention has been focused on how the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide applies to the jail environment. To gain a better understanding of suicide in jails, an interpretive meta-synthesis of three qualitative articles was conducted. The combined sample included thirty-four individuals from three jails. These three articles were analyzed to identify common themes that led inmates to suicide. Three broad categories were identified through constant comparison of the data. These categories are: mental health factors, environmental conditions, and relationship issues. These three broad categories are discussed in relation to the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, demonstrating its application in the jail setting. This information is essential for correctional facilities and staff for use in their day-to-day interactions with inmates. Future research is needed to identify and examine current suicide prevention programs in the United States penal system
