Increasing Production Efficiency Of an Extension Radio Program
Restrictions on time and money available for The Virginia Gardener radio program forced a re-evaluation of standard weekly or monthly production procedures. By changing to an annual system and using existing resources more efficiently, the program has become easier to produce and fits into station schedules more readily. The use of many guests has made it more interesting and diverse, and it is now widely used by Extension agents as well as radio stations. It is sent to 58 stations, which broadcast it an average of twice each week
Acceptance and commitment therapy delivered in a dyad after a severe traumatic brain injury: a feasibility study
Objective:
There is a high prevalence of complex psychological distress after a traumatic brain injury but limited evidence of effective interventions. We examined the feasibility of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy after a severe traumatic brain injury using the criteria, investigating a therapeutic effect, and reviewing the acceptability of measures, treatment protocol, and delivery method (in a dyad of two clients and a therapist).
Method:
Two male outpatients with severe traumatic brain injury and associated psychological distress jointly engaged in a seven session treatment program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy principles. Pre- and post-treatment measures of mood, psychological flexibility, and participation were taken in addition to weekly measures.
Results:
The intervention showed a therapeutic effect with one participant, and appeared to be acceptable for both participants with regard to program content, measures, and delivery mode by in a dyad. One participant showed both significant clinical and reliable change across several outcome measures including measures of mood and psychological flexibility. The second participant did not show a reduction in psychological inflexibility, but did show a significant drop in negative affect. Significant changes pre- to post-treatment for measures of participation were not indicated. Qualitatively, both participants engaged in committed action set in accordance with their values.
Conclusions:
This study suggests that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be feasible to be delivered in a dyad with individuals who have a severe traumatic brain injury. A further test of its potential efficacy in a phase II clinical trial is recommended
Local Applications of the National Livestock and Poultry Environmental Stewardship Curriculum
This paper introduces the LPES curriculum project, summarizing the curriculum development process, the final curriculum materials, and the outreach activities. Following an overview of the LPES Curriculum Impact Survey, the authors will present representative examples of uses and modifications made of the LPES curriculum as it is used with targeted audiences. This model for utilizing national expertise to address state and local educational needs may have benefit in other extension education programs as land grant university resources decrease. The paper concludes with a discussion of lessons learned from this national extension education curriculum development effort
Decomposition of General Premium Principles into Risk and Deviation
Nendel M, Schmeck MD, Riedel F. Decomposition of General Premium Principles into Risk and Deviation. Center for Mathematical Economics Working Papers. Vol 638 aktual. Version July 2020. Bielefeld: Center for Mathematical Economics; 2020.In this paper, we provide an axiomatic approach to general premium
principles giving rise to a decomposition into risk, as a generalization of the expected
value, and deviation, as a generalization of the variance. We show that, for every premium
principle, there exists a maximal risk measure capturing all risky components
covered by the insurance prices. In a second step, we consider dual representations of
convex risk measures consistent with the premium principle. In particular, we show
that the convex conjugate of the aforementioned maximal risk measure coincides with
the convex conjugate of the premium principle on the set of all finitely additive probability
measures. In a last step, we consider insurance prices in the presence of a
not neccesarily frictionless market, where insurance claims are traded. In this setup,
we discuss premium principles that are consistent with hedging using securization
products that are traded in the market.AMS 2010 Subject Classification: 91B30; 91G20; 46A2
Update on results of SPRE testing at NASA Lewis
The Space Power Research Engine (SPRE), a free-piston Stirling engine with a linear alternator, is being tested at NASA Lewis Research Center as part of the Civilian Space Technology Initiative (CSTI) as a candidate for high capacity space power. Results are presented from recent SPRE tests designed to investigated the effects of variation in the displacer seal clearance and piston centering port area on engine performance and dynamics. The impact of these variations on PV power and efficiency are presented. Comparisons of the displacer seal clearance tests results with HFAST code predictions show good agreement for PV power, but show poor agreement for PV efficiency. Correlations are presented relating the piston midstroke position to the dynamic Delta P across the piston and the centering port area. Test results indicate that a modest improvement in PV power and efficiency may be realized with a reduction in piston centering port area
High-resolution Elemental Mapping of the Lunar Surface
New instruments and missions are being proposed to study the lunar surface as a result of the resurgence of interest in returning to the Moon. One instrument recently proposed is similar in concept to the x-ray fluorescence detectors flown on Apollo, but utilizes fluorescence from the L- and M-shells rather than the K-shell. This soft X-Ray Flourescence Imager (XRFI) is discussed
