      O artigo leva o Núcleo de Engenharia Biomédica (NIB) da Universidade da República (Uruguai) como um exemplo de como é possível conseguir interdisciplinaridade e colaboração global nas atividades de ensino do Ensino Superior com foco em Engenharia Biomédica e Informática médica. Do registro qualitativo e análise de suas práticas nos diferentes formatos de ensino; foi possível interpretar as melhores estratégias pedagógicas na combinação de interdisciplinaridade e colaboração à distância ao usar as novas tecnologias de comunicação.This paper takes the Núcleo of Ingeniería Biomédica (NIB) from the Universidad de la República (Uruguay) as an example of how interdisciplinarity and global collaboration can be achieved in Higher Education teaching activities with a focus on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics. We have recorded and analyzed using a qualitative strategy its practices in different teaching formats to interpret the best pedagogical strategies in the combination of interdisciplinarity and distant collaboration when using new technologies of communication.El artículo toma al Núcleo de Ingeniería Biomédica (NIB) de la Universidad de la República (Uruguay) como un ejemplo de cómo se puede lograr la interdisciplinariedad y la colaboración global en las actividades docentes de Educación Superior con un enfoque en la Ingeniería Biomédica y la Informática Médica.     Equipos y sistemas biomédicos ante el cambio de milenio : ¿están preparados los instrumentos y los programas para el año 2000?

    El uso de dos cifras para designar el año en los sistemas y equipos biomédicos de las décadas pasadas puede dar origen a situaciones no previstas cuando se inicie el siglo XX/. Este fenómeno se mantfestard en todos las computadoras y los programas para los cuales no se previó explícitamente su uso en el tercer milenio. Los efectos posibles van desde errores en el cálculo de edades y estadías, en el día de la semana (1 de enero de 2000 es sábado y no lunes como el 1 de enero de 1900), hasta la no operación de una bomba de infusión continua que espera encontrar una fecha de calibración reciente. Las acciones recomendadas incluyen la simulación anticipada del 31 de diciembre de 1999, que puede derivar en sustituciones parciales o totales de los sistemas. Las primeras versiones del Sistema Informático Perinatal, inicialmente desarrollado en 1983, siguen en uso en varios países, lo que motivó modificaciones para el año 2000.     BiliLED low cost neonatal phototherapy, from prototype to industry

    BiliLED is a phototherapy instrument designed to reduce bilirrubin blood rates in new born babies with jaundice. The light source is centred at 470 nm with a bandwidth of 35 nm and includes a matrix of 196 (14x14) InGaN LEDs. The optical elements are designed to maximize the light intensity useful for treatment, with a small number of LEDs in a compact and low cost unit. The optic array is such that every LED illuminates all the treatment area, which ensures redundancy and, thus, a high reliability not to be found in single-lamp instruments. Thermal dissipation and cost of BiliLED are both an order-of-magnitude smaller than conventional therapy lamps. BiliLED adjusts coetaneous irradiation with a feedback loop to compensate the loss or aging of LEDs achieving a calibrated light source for over a decade of use. A clinical trial in 20 hyperbilirrubinaemia patients shows 16% bilirrubin degradation within 24 hours of treatment, higher than most lamp phototherapy instruments.     Using OpenEHR in SICTI an electronic health record system for critical medicine

    SICTI is a software tool for registering health records in critical medicine environments. Version 1.0 has been in use since 2003. The Biomedical Engineering Group (Núcleo de Ingeniería Biomédica), with support from the Technological Development Programme (Programa de Desarrollo Tecnológico), decided to develop a new version, to provide an aid for more critical medicine processes, based on a framework which would make the application domain change oriented. The team analyzed three alternatives: to develop an original product based on new research, to base the development on OpenEHR framework, or to use HL7 RIM as the reference model for SICTI. The team opted for OpenEHR. This work describes the use of OpenEHR, its strong and weak points, and states future work perspectives

    Mobile phone radiation and brain cancer at the dawn of the 5G era

    There is great controversy regarding the long-term health risks associated with radio frequency electromagnetic radiation. A systematic review was conducted in order to assess non-thermal effects of these emissions in the human body. The 0.08W/kg limit on the specific absorption rate over the whole body suggested by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guarantees that mobile phones will not cause a harmful body temperature increase. Nevertheless, some studies claim that exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields may increase the risk of developing a brain tumor. Ongoing research might help to mitigate some of the confusion surrounding this topic. The beginning of the 5G era urges us to question whether the emission limits established more than 20 years ago by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection are still valid.Existe gran controversia respecto a cuáles son los efectos de los campos electromagnéticos de radiofrecuencia sobre el cuerpo humano a largo plazo. Se realizó una revisión sistemática para recolectar información acerca del impacto de la exposición a estos campos sobre la salud de las personas. El límite de 0.08W/kg para la tasa de absorción específica media de cuerpo entero propuesto por la Comisión Internacional de Protección contra las Radiaciones No-Ionizantes garantiza que las emisiones de los teléfonos móviles no provocarán un aumento de temperatura nocivo en las personas. No obstante, hay estudios que afirman que la exposición a los campos electromagnéticos de radiofrecuencia puede aumentar el riesgo de padecer tumores cerebrales. Investigaciones en marcha reúnen el esfuerzo de varios países para mitigar la confusión que rodea este tema. El comienzo de la era 5G motiva a cuestionarse si los límites de emisión, establecidos hace más de 20 años por la Comisión Internacional de Protección contra las Radiaciones No-Ionizantes, siguen aún vigentes en la actualidad

    A Simple Gaze Tracker for Computer Operation by the Disabled in Education

    A compact gaze tracker was developed which consists of a head band and electrodes which process the Electro-Oculo-Gram (EOG) reflecting the patient´s eye movements. We have confirmed that the processed EOG signal correlates well with gaze angle, and we show that the instrument we designed enables a child to move a target on a screen up to 40 degrees left-right from central sight. To achieve this, a signal processing circuit was designed and placed on a head band to minimize noise. Further processing is based on the identification of saccadic eye movements and on the educated calculation of the estimated gaze angle as a result of angle change in both directions. A 75% success rate was achieved to detect transitions of eye positions in 5° steps from +40° to -40°. First tests by normal children suggest that the device may prove useful for communication by the disabled (e.g. patients with no control on hand movements). In such cases, extensive personal training will tap on neurological plasticity to achieve the required performance level for computer mouse command of educational games and for interactive applications in general
