    Les effets géographiques des éruptions volcaniques

    Les méthodes de réflexion géographique permettent d’appréhender efficacement les jeux d’échelles et les temporalités multiples des effets induits par les éruptions volcaniques. L’objectif de cette synthèse est ainsi de comprendre les espaces volcaniques en tant qu’objets géographiques, en replaçant les impacts des éruptions au cœur d’une étude spatiale et temporelle. Les impacts de tels événements imposent des recompositions spatiales à l’échelle du volcan lui-même, et, dans le cas d’éruptions de plus grande magnitude, peuvent avoir des conséquences à l’échelle régionale voire mondiale. Les divers exemples abordés ici mettent l’accent sur les risques, la vulnérabilité et la résilience des populations vivant sur ces espaces marqués par les aléas volcaniques.The purpose of this paper aims to study the volcanic areas as geographical objects. Geographical analyses help to understand at different scales the levels of impacts induced by volcanic eruptions. Impacts of such events trigger spatial changes across the volcano itself, and can have consequences at regional or even global level in case of outbreaks of greater magnitude. The various examples discussed here focus on hazards, vulnerability and resilience of people living in those volcanic-hazard prone areas

    Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Landslides in Java and the Triggering Factors

    Java Island, the most populated island of Indonesia, is prone to landslide disasters. Their occurrence and impact have increased mainly as the result of natural factors, aggravated by human imprint. This paper is intended to analyse: (1) the spatio-temporal variation of landslides in Java during short term and long-term periods, and (2) their causative factors such as rainfall, topography, geology, earthquakes, and land-use. The evaluation spatially and temporally of historical landslides and consequences were based on the landslide database covering the period of 1981 – 2007 in the GIS environment. Database showed that landslides distributed unevenly between West Java (67 %), Central Java (29 %) and East Java (4 %). Slope failures were most abundant on the very intensively weathered zone of old volcanic materials on slope angles of 30O – 40O. Rainfall threshold analysis showed that shallow landslides and deep-seated landslides were triggered by rainfall events of 300 – 600 mm and 600 mm respectively of antecedent rainfall during 30 consecutive days, and many cases showed that the landslides were not always initiated by intense rainfall during the landslide day. Human interference plays an important role in landslide occurrence through land conversion from natural forest to dryland agriculture which was the host of most of landslides in Java. These results and methods can be used as valuable information on the spatio-temporal characteristics of landslides in Java and their relationship with causative factors, thereby providing a sound basis for landslide investigation in more detail

    Community radio-based disaster information dissemination pattern on K-Pass FM Radio Katapang

    K-Pass FM Radio Katapang is one of the radios disseminating information about disasters that focuses on training, awareness, and understanding of the people of Katapang Regency to play a role in dealing with disasters and help reduce disaster risk as well. This study aimed to determine the dissemination pattern of disaster information based on community radio conducted by Radio K-Pass FM Katapang. The research used a qualitative approach through case studies research methods. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature studies. Informants amount six people consist of resource persons consisting of community radio administrators, people who feel the impact of the existence of community radio, and people who take part in community radio programs. The study results showed that the dissemination of disaster information on Radio K-Pass FM Katapang increased the awareness of the local community about the dangers of disasters. The disaster information on K-Pass FM Radio Katapang went through three stages: the pattern of dissemination of disaster mitigation information (pre), the pattern of disseminating information when the disaster occurred (in), and post-disaster information (past). This community radio also established a Rescue School that aims to provide knowledge and actions that the community can carry out when a disaster occurs. This study concludes that Radio K-Pass FM Katapang has succeeded in becoming a community radio that positively impacts society, especially in disseminating information related to disasters.     Este artículo presenta un método de control tolerante a fallas para sistemas no lineales planos. Las propiedades intrínsecas de los sistemas planos generan redundancia analítica y permiten calcular todos los estados y las entradas de control del sistema. Los residuos son calculados comparando las medidas reales provenientes de los sensores y las señales obtenidas gracias al conjunto de ecuaciones del sistema plano. Fallas multiplicativas y aditivas se pueden manejar de manera indistinta. Las señales redundantes obtenidas con las ecuaciones del sistema plano son usadas para reconfigurar el sistema con falla. La factibilidad del método propuesto es verificada para fallas aditivas en un sistema de tres tanques. ABSTRACT This paper presents a Fault Tolerant control approach for nonlinear flat systems. Flatness property affords analytical redundancy and permit to compute the states and control inputs of the system. Residual signals are computed by comparing real measures and the computed signals obtained using the differentially flat equations. Multiplicative and additive faults can be handled indistinctly. The redundant signals obtained with the differentially flat equations are used to reconfigure the faulty system. Feasibility of this approach is verified for additive faults in a three tank system

    The 21 February 2005, catastrophic waste avalanche at Leuwigajah dumpsite, Bandung, Indonesia

    International audienceOn 21 February 2005 the Leuwigajah dumpsite, Bandung (Java, Indonesia) was affected by a largeslide after heavy rainfalls. Second deadliest waste slide in history, it buried 71 houses and killed 143 people.Amongst the contemporary disastrous events of this type, only a few have been documented. We explored failurepreconditions, triggering mechanisms and local context that conducted to this disaster. We carried on four fieldinvestigations on the site. A series of aerial photographs were acquired and completed by topographical measureson the ground. The morphology of the slide and its trajectory were reconstructed. To constrain the movementcondition, we studied the internal structure of the source area and realized surveys among stakeholders of thedumpsite and citizen.Results: 2.7 10 6 m3 of waste materials spread 1000 m from the source in a rice field with an average thickness of10 m. The material displays a preferential fabric parallel to the previous topography. Numerous internal slip surfaces,underlined by plastic bags explain the low friction coefficient. The presence of methane within the waste dumpwas responsible for explosions prior to sliding and for the fire that affects whole sliding mass.Conclusions: Resulting of a combination of heavy rainfall and consecutive explosions due to biogas suddenrelease, this disaster was predictable in reason ofi) a front slope of the dump of about 100% before the failure;ii) a poor dumpsite management;iii) the extreme vulnerability of the marginalized scavengers living at risk at the foot of the instable dump

    Propolis can potentialise the anti-adhesion activity of proanthocyanidins on uropathogenic Escherichia coli in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Escherichia coli</it>, the main bacteria found in recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), is now frequently resistant to several currently used antibiotic treatments making new solutions essential. In this study, we evaluated the association propolis and proanthocyanidins type A to reduce bacterial anti-adhesion activity of <it>E. coli </it>on urothelial cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This first double-blind, randomized, cross-over human trial included 5 volunteers that followed 6 different regimens with or without variable doses of cranberry and propolis with a washout period of at least 1 week between each regimen. Urine samples were collected at 0 h, 4-6 h, 12 h and 24 h after cranberry plus propolis or placebo capsule consumption. In vivo urinary bacterial anti-adhesion activity was assessed with a bioassay (a human T24 epithelial cell-line assay) and an in vivo <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>model. HPLC-PDA-MS was used to detect propolis and cranberry compounds in urine. Bioassays indicated significant bacterial anti-adhesion activity in urine collected from volunteers who had consumed cranberry plus propolis powder compared to placebo (<it>p </it>< 0.001). This inhibition was clearly dose-dependent, increasing with the amount of PACs and propolis equivalents consumed in each regimen. Results suggested that propolis had an additional effect with PACs and prevent a bacterial anti-adhesion effect over 1 day. An in vivo model showed that the <it>E. coli </it>strain presented a reduced ability to kill <it>C. elegans </it>after their growth in urine samples of patients who took cranberry plus propolis capsules. HPLC confirmed that propolis is excreted in urine.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study presents an alternative to prevent recurrent UTI. Administration of PACs plus propolis once daily offers some protection against bacterial adhesion, bacterial multiplication and virulence in the urinary tract, representing an interesting new strategy to prevent recurrent UTI.</p

    VGLL2-NCOA2 leverages developmental programs for pediatric sarcomagenesis

    Clinical sequencing efforts are rapidly identifying sarcoma gene fusions that lack functional validation. An example is the fusion of transcriptional coactivators, VGLL2-NCOA2, found in infantile rhabdomyosarcoma. To delineate VGLL2-NCOA2 tumorigenic mechanisms and identify therapeutic vulnerabilities, we implement a cross-species comparative oncology approach with zebrafish, mouse allograft, and patient samples. We find that VGLL2-NCOA2 is sufficient to generate mesenchymal tumors that display features of immature skeletal muscle and recapitulate the human disease. A subset of VGLL2-NCOA2 zebrafish tumors transcriptionally cluster with embryonic somitogenesis and identify VGLL2-NCOA2 developmental programs, including a RAS family GTPase, ARF6. In VGLL2-NCOA2 zebrafish, mouse, and patient tumors, ARF6 is highly expressed. ARF6 knockout suppresses VGLL2-NCOA2 oncogenic activity in cell culture, and, more broadly, ARF6 is overexpressed in adult and pediatric sarcomas. Our data indicate that VGLL2-NCOA2 is an oncogene that leverages developmental programs for tumorigenesis and that reactivation or persistence of ARF6 could represent a therapeutic opportunity
