    Chiral Koszul duality

    Get PDF
We extend the theory of chiral and factorization algebras, developed for curves by Beilinson and Drinfeld in \cite{bd}, to higher-dimensional varieties. This extension entails the development of the homotopy theory of chiral and factorization structures, in a sense analogous to Quillen's homotopy theory of differential graded Lie algebras. We prove the equivalence of higher-dimensional chiral and factorization algebras by embedding factorization algebras into a larger category of chiral commutative coalgebras, then realizing this interrelation as a chiral form of Koszul duality. We apply these techniques to rederive some fundamental results of \cite{bd} on chiral enveloping algebras of ⋆\star-Lie algebras

HIVISM1: A PERVASIVE SYSTEM OF OPPRESSION

This paper, structured in three parts, argues that the negative treatment meted out to people living with HIV/AIDS by those who are HIV negative or unaware of their serostatus, constitutes oppression. The writer draws on a qualitative study that explores the perceptions and experiences of nine individuals living with HIV/AIDS. In part one the terms stigma, prejudice, discrimination and oppression are unpacked. In the second part the writer describes the research strategy used to understand the participant’s subjective experiences of prejudice and discrimination. Part three integrates the voices from the interviews together with the literature and empirical analysis. The following themes emerged: (1) Negative labels and stereotypes, (2) Unprovoked attacks on person and property, (3) Institutional discrimination and exclusion, (4) Internalised HIVism (people who accept the negative views of themselves experience feelings of guilt, shame and self-blame), and (5) Horizontal HIVism (people living with HIV/AIDS direct hostility and mistreat others who are HIV positive)

RESEARCHING THE ROLE OF RACE IN YOUNG BIRACIAL ADULTS’ IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION; EXPLORING IMPLICATIONS FOR TRANS-RACIAL ADOPTIONS

    Get PDF
This article draws on the insights of research on nine Indian-White biracial young adults, and applies those insights to the transracial adoption debate. It thus does not report research on transracial adoption directly, but enters the debate on transracial adoption through using insights on the process of racial identity construction that challenge some assumptions prominent in the debate

Sexuality, Society and Pedagogy problematises some of the prevailing assumptions that frame this area of study. In doing so, it aims to make visible the challenges of teaching sexuality education in South African schools, while demonstrating its potential for reshaping our conceptions of the social and cultural representations thereof. Although the book is largely situated in experiences and perspectives within the South African context, it is hoped that the questions raised, reflections, analyses and arguments will contribute to thinking about sexuality education in diverse contexts, in particular more developing contexts

Issues and opportunities in space photovoltaics

Space power sources are becoming a central focus for determining man's potential and schedule for exploring and utilizing the benefits of space. The ability to search, probe, survey, and communicate throughout the universe will depend on providing adequate power to the instruments to do these jobs. Power requirements for space platforms are increasing and will continue to increase into the 21st century. Photovoltaics have been a dependable power source for space for the last 30 years and have served as the primary source of power on virtually all DOD and NASA satellites. The performance of silicon (Si) solar cells has increased from 10 percent air mass zero (AM0) solar energy conversion efficiency in the early 60's to almost 15 percent on today's spacecraft. Some technologists even think that the potential for solar photovoltaics has reached a plateau. However, present and near-future Air Force and NASA requirements show needs that, if the problems are looked upon as opportunities, can elevate the photovoltaic power source scientist and array structure engineer into the next technological photovoltaic growth curve

Post Anthesis Nitrogen Loss from Corn

    Get PDF
Nitrogen (N) management practices of corn producers have been called into question because of nitrate contamination problems in surface and ground water. Fertilizer N has been strongly implicated as the major source of much of the nitrate that now exists in our water resources. Cultural practices used in corn production lend themselves to possible nitrate leaching because practical limitations require a majority of the fertilizer N to be applied well ahead of when it can be used by the crop. Nitrogen uptake by corn is anything but uniform throughout the growing season. Little N is used by a corn crop before mid June and by silking in mid to late July 70 to 90% of total N uptake at harvest will already be in the plant. This scenario implies that only 10 to 30% of total N uptake occurs after silking even though the crop accumulates about half of its dry matter after silking. This simple analogy assumes that once N enters the plant it is not lost until the crop matures

    Career Expectations Of Accounting Students

The demographic make-up of accounting students is dramatically changing. This study sets out to measure how well the profession is ready to accommodate what may be very different needs and expectations of this new generation of students. Non-traditional students are becoming more and more of a tradition in the current college classroom. Historically, accounting has been an anglo-male-dominated profession.  The make-up of college students now comprises some 57% women. The enrollment in some college accounting classes is even more skewed with women in Texas representing over 80% of the enrollment. A further changing demographic is the emergence of Hispanic females in accounting classes. Hispanics now make up approximately 20% of the Texas population.  Texas is the second largest state economy in the USA and has recently become a Majority/Minority state.  The conclusion is made that the demographic make-up of college students entering the accounting profession is undergoing profound and permanent change. Female Hispanics will make up a significant segment of accounting employment. How will the expectations of this markedly different group of students mesh with the existing culture of the accounting workplace?  Other researchers have looked at the workplace environment in terms of flextime and location.  An important part of this study involves ‘behavioral accounting’ research.  Expectancy theory offers explanations for the motivation of behavior.&nbsp
