Soldier, Civilian, Student: Understanding the Relationship between Gender, Engagement, and Self-Identity of College Student Veterans
Student engagement is a recognized factor within higher education when understanding student satisfaction, retention, and persistence. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has been used across the nation since 2000 to measure the engagement behaviors of first year and fourth-year students at four-year institutions. The results of the study provide context for campuses to adapt their policies and practices to continue to support their students as well as providing a national baseline for the student experience. The purpose of this study was to explore the engagement behaviors of fourth-year student veterans to determine if gender or any of the five benchmarks of engagement from the NSSE: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment predicts the self-reported growth in the self-identity. The benchmarks and gender were regressed against the self-reported outcome of understanding yourself. Results indicated that gender was significant and that for male veterans academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, and a supportive campus environment were predictors of growth of self-identity. The results also indicated that for women veterans academic challenge, enriching educational experiences, and a supportive campus environment were predictors of growth of self-identity. Neither group showed that active and collaborative learning predicts growth of self-identity. On average, women veterans reported having a higher sense of self than their male veteran peers within the 2012 NSSE sample

ACMG standards and guidelines are designed primarily as an educational resource for physicians and other health care providers to help them provide quality medical genetic services. Adherence to these standards and guidelines does not necessarily ensure a successful medical outcome. These standards and guidelines should not be considered inclusive of all proper procedures and tests or exclusive of other procedures and tests that are reasonably directed to obtaining the same results. in determining the propriety of any specific procedure or test, the geneticist should apply his or her own professional judgment to the specific clinical circumstances presented by the individual patient or specimen. Blockade of PGHS-2 inhibits the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis response to cerebral hypoperfusion in the sheep fetus
Decreases in fetal blood pressure stimulate homeostatic stress responses that help return blood pressure to normal levels. Fetal hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses to hypotension are mediated by chemoreceptor and baroreceptor reflexes and ischemia of the fetal central nervous system. Indomethacin, a nonselective inhibitor of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase (PGHS)-1 and -2, attenuates the HPA response to hypotension in the fetus. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that selective inhibition of PGHS-2 also inhibits the HPA response to cerebral hypoperfusion. We studied 13 chronically catheterized fetal sheep (126–136 days gestation). Five fetal sheep were subjected to intracerebroventricular infusion of nimesulide (0.01 mg/day), a specific inhibitor of PGHS-2, and eight were treated with vehicle (DMSO in water) for 5 days. Each fetus was subjected to a 10-min period of brachiocephalic occlusion, which decreased carotid arterial pressure ∼75% and reflexively increased fetal plasma concentrations of ACTH, POMC, cortisol, and femoral arterial pressure, and decreased fetal heart rate. Nimesulide significantly inhibited the ACTH response to the BCO, while significantly augmenting the reflex cardiovascular response and altering fetal heart rate variability consistent with increased sympathetic nervous system activity. The results of this study demonstrate that the activity of PGHS-2 in the brain is a necessary component of the fetal HPA response to cerebral hypoperfusion in the late-gestation fetal sheep. These results are consistent with those of recent study, in which we demonstrated that the preparturient increase in fetal ACTH secretion depends upon PGHS-2 activity within the fetal brain
Multispecies Epidemiologic Surveillance Study after an Outbreak of Yersiniosis at an African Green Monkey Research Facility.
After an outbreak of Yersinia enterocolitica at a NHP research facility, we performed a multispecies investigation of the prevalence of Yersinia spp. in various mammals that resided or foraged on the grounds of the facility, to better understand the epizootiology of yersiniosis. Blood samples and fecal and rectal swabs were obtained from 105 captive African green monkeys (AGM), 12 feral cats, 2 dogs, 20 mice, 12 rats, and 3 mongooses. Total DNA extracted from swab suspensions served as template for the detection of Y. enterocolitica DNA by real-time PCR. Neither Y. enterocolitica organisms nor their DNA were detected from any of these samples. However, Western blotting revealed the presence of Yersinia antibodies in plasma. The AGM samples revealed a seroprevalence of 91% for Yersinia spp. and of 61% for Y. enterocolitica specifically. The AGM that were housed in cages where at least one fatality occurred during the outbreak (clinical group) had similar seroprevalence to that of AGM housed in unaffected cages (nonclinical group). However, the nonclinical group was older than the clinical group. In addition, 25%, 100%, 33%, 10%, and 10% of the sampled local cats, dogs, mongooses, rats, and mice, respectively, were seropositive. The high seroprevalence after this outbreak suggests that Y. enterocolitica was transmitted effectively through the captive AGM population and that age was an important risk factor for disease. Knowledge regarding local environmental sources of Y. enterocolitica and the possible role of wildlife in the maintenance of yersiniosis is necessary to prevent and manage this disease
