Thermodynamic performance testing of the orbiter flash evaporator system
System level testing of the space shuttle orbiter's development flash evaporator system (FES) was performed in a thermal vacuum chamber capable of simulating ambient ascent, orbital, and entry temperature and pressure profiles. The test article included the evaporator assembly, high load and topping exhaust duct and nozzle assemblies, and feedwater supply assembly. Steady state and transient heat load, water pressure/temperature and ambient pressure/temperature profiles were imposed by especially designed supporting test hardware. Testing in 1978 verified evaporator and duct heater thermal design, determined FES performance boundaries, and assessed topping evaporator plume characteristics. Testing in 1979 combined the FES with the other systems in the orbiter active thermal control subsystem (ATCS). The FES met or exceeded all nominal and contingency performance requirements during operation with the integrated ATCS. During both tests stability problems were encountered during steady state operations which resulted in subsequent design changes to the water spray nozzle and valve plate assemblies
Emergence of Quantum Ergodicity in Rough Billiards
By analytical mapping of the eigenvalue problem in rough billiards on to a
band random matrix model a new regime of Wigner ergodicity is found. There the
eigenstates are extended over the whole energy surface but have a strongly
peaked structure. The results of numerical simulations and implications for

Planting the seed of sound change: Evidence from real-time MRI of velum kinematics in German
Velum movement signals generated from real-time magnetic resonance imaging videos of thirty-five German speakers were used to investigate the physiological conditions that might pro-mote sound change involving the development of contrastive vowel nasality. The results suggest that, in comparison to when a nasal consonant precedes a voiced obstruent, the velum gesture as-sociated with a nasal consonant preceding a voiceless obstruent undergoes gestural rescaling and temporal rephasing. This further suggests that the diachronic development of contrastive vowel nasality comprises two stages: the first stage involves gestural shortening and realignment, while the second stage involves a trading relationship between source and effect
One-Particle Spectral Properties of Mott-Hubbard Insulators
We use an exact holon and spinon Landau-liquid functional which describes the
holon - spinon interactions at all scattering orders, to study correlation
functions of integrable multicomponent many-particle problems showing both
linear and non-linear energy bands. We consider specific cases when the
dominant non-linear band terms are quadratic and apply our results to the
evaluation of the 1D Hubbard model correlation functions beyond conformal-field

Level Statistics and Localization for Two Interacting Particles in a Random Potential
We consider two particles with a local interaction in a random potential
at a scale (the one particle localization length). A simplified
description is provided by a Gaussian matrix ensemble with a preferential
basis. We define the symmetry breaking parameter
associated to the statistical invariance under change of basis. We show that
the Wigner-Dyson rigidity of the energy levels is maintained up to an energy
. We find that when (the
inverse lifetime of the states of the preferential basis) is smaller than
(the level spacing), and when . This implies that the two-particle localization length first

Distribution of parametric conductance derivatives of a quantum dot
The conductance G of a quantum dot with single-mode ballistic point contacts
depends sensitively on external parameters X, such as gate voltage and magnetic
field. We calculate the joint distribution of G and dG/dX by relating it to the
distribution of the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix of a chaotic system. The
distribution of dG/dX has a singularity at zero and algebraic tails. While G
and dG/dX are correlated, the ratio of dG/dX and is independent
of G. Coulomb interactions change the distribution of dG/dX, by inducing a
transition from the grand-canonical to the canonical ensemble. All these
predictions can be tested in semiconductor microstructures or microwave
