In this era of co-evolution of humans and computers, we are witnessing a lot of fear that humanity will lose control and autonomy. This is a possibility. Another is the development of symbiotic systems among men and machines. To accomplish this goal, it is necessary to research ways to apply some key concepts that have a catalytic effect over such ideas. In the discussion of this hypothesis through the case study of the spectacle MindFluctuations— an experimental artwork exploring neural connections—we are looking for ways to develop them from conception to realization. The discussion also establishes a process of reflection on the design, development and production of this dance spectacle. This artwork uses a customized Java application, NumericVariations, to explore the quoted neural connections for spectacles, performances and site-specific installations. Its approach was made possible by recent neuroscience research and the development of a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) integrated with a virtual reality framework, which enable an experimental interactive virtual reality artwork to emerge. A neural helmet connected to the computer and entwined with mathematical procedures enabled a symbiosis of humans with computers.

In this paper a monitoring system for concrete structures at high temperatures (500ºC) is presented. The aim of the monitoring strategy based on fibre optic sensors (FOS) is to develop a high-tech monitoring technology for future installation in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants with the purpose of lifecycle analysis and predictive maintenance via structural health monitoring (SHM). The monitoring strategy is based on embedding FOS in high thermal performance concrete while it is casting. The FOS technology employed to monitor both temperature and strain in concrete is known as Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG). In this work, the development of the special metallic coating and smart packaging employed to protect the sensors in this harsh environment, the calibration of the sensors and the thermal validation of the monitoring system at lab scale working in a range of temperatures between 200ºC and 500ºC is demonstrated. The lab tests were performed over a sample of 30x30x30cm, composed of 2 different layers and 4 tubes of steel, the core is made with concrete specially manufactured to have a very good thermal behaviour, and the second layer is for the insulating, and it is formed by foam concrete. The FBG sensors were positioned longitudinally, parallel to the tubes by drill holes on the casting structure at 14 different positions. The concrete curing process and some different heating cycles up to 500ºC, simulating the thermal behaviour of CSP plants, were monitored using the fibre sensor

In this paper a technique to embed fiber optic sensors (FOS) to metallic structures is presented and validated opening possibilities to smart metallic structures. The technique is based in widely adopted and low cost TIG welding. A detailed procedure for scaling up is presented in which, Ni and Cu coated fiber optics at first, and Ni coated FBG sensors at last are embedded in Tin coated forged steel ST-52 with Tin alloy wire. Tensile and temperature tests show stable measurements with 1.3pm/µm and 24pm/ºC sensibility in the embedded sensor in a metallic specimen for strain ranges from 0 to 550µm and temperature ranges from 50 to 200ºC.This paper was supported by the project Unidad mixta de investigación NEXT-BEARINGS with reference IN853A 2015/2, funded by the Spanish general government administration and the Xunta de Galicia through GAIN and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism of Spain. Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABThis study presents functionalized open-celled cellulose Metalzorb® sponge (Sponge) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and L-Cysteine (Cys), and the resulting MPA@Sponge and Cys@Sponge showed significantly improved removal efficiency towards trace cisplatin and carboplatin against Sponge. MPA@Sponge achieved maximum removal of 88.9 ± 0.5% for cisplatin and 85.2 ± 0.4% for carboplatin, while Cys@Sponge achieved maximum removal of 75 ± 2% and 59 ± 1%. In contrast, Sponge only achieved removal of 29 ± 4% and 4 ± 1%, respectively. It suggests that thiol groups serve as favourable binding sites for Pt complexation. Carboplatin exhibits lower adsorption compared to cisplatin due to its limited hydration. However, the presence of Cl in stock and high temperature facilitate the hydration and the formation of active derivatives of carboplatin, thereby enhancing its adsorption. The rapid adsorption processes of cisplatin and carboplatin are well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model involving diffusion and chemisorption. The results from adsorption isotherms revealed a monolayer adsorption that aligns with the principles proposed by the Langmuir model. High temperature significantly enhances the adsorption, and the positive enthalpies indicate that the binding of Pt with thiol groups is endothermic process. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Pt L-edge revealed a similar coordination environment of the adsorbed Pt on both functionalized adsorbents, which can be attributed to the formation of four Pt-S bonds during the adsorption. To assess the validity of the adsorption results under realistic medium conditions, an adsorption study was carried out by using diluted urine spiked with trace platinum cytostatic drugs to simulate hospital wastewater. 90.2 ± 0.3% of cisplatin and 77.0 ± 0.2% of carboplatin was effectively removed by MPA@Sponge from diluted urine

Resultados: Se incluyeron 28 medicamentos, correspondientes a 25 principios activos.

    Get PDF
Introduction: Cabozantinib is a drug indicated for the treatment of renal cancer and hepatocarcinoma with proven efficacy in clinical trials. However, when we analyze its safety profile, the pivotal trials themselves show a high percentage of adverse effects, making it necessary in many cases to reduce the dose or interrupt treatment due to toxicity. Therefore, our study aims to analyze the tolerability and safety of cabozantinib in our population. Method: Observational, retrospective and single-center study. Different variables related to the safety and tolerability of the drug were evaluated. To assess toxicity, the National Cancer Institute criteria (CTCAE version 5.0) were used. Tolerance was assessed based on the presence of adverse effects during treatment with cabozantinib. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of the data was performed. Results: A total of 17 patients were included (mean age: 63.5 years old). All of them presented adverse effects. The main toxicities presented of any grade were asthenia, diarrhea, skin toxicity, hypomagnesemia, hypertransaminemia, and palmoplantar syndrome. 41.2% were grade 3 toxicity, the main adverse reactions being hypertransaminemia and hypomagnesemia. Hospital admission due to drug toxicity was required by 23.5%. Dose reduction to 40 mg due to toxicity was required by 94.1% of patients. Conclusions: Cabozantinib has an unfavorable safety profile with a high percentage of adverse effects that require dose reduction or treatment interruption.Introducción: Cabozantinib es un fármaco indicado en el tratamiento de cáncer renal y hepatocarcinoma con eficacia demostrada en ensayos clínicos. Post-stroke Neurogenesis: Friend or Foe?

    Get PDF
The substantial clinical burden and disability after stroke injury urges the need to explore therapeutic solutions. Recent compelling evidence supports that neurogenesis persists in the adult mammalian brain and is amenable to regulation in both physiological and pathological situations. Its ability to generate new neurons implies a potential to contribute to recovery after brain injury. However, post-stroke neurogenic response may have different functional consequences. On the one hand, the capacity of newborn neurons to replenish the damaged tissue may be limited. In addition, aberrant forms of neurogenesis have been identified in several insult settings. All these data suggest that adult neurogenesis is at a crossroads between the physiological and the pathological regulation of the neurological function in the injured central nervous system (CNS). Given the complexity of the CNS together with its interaction with the periphery, we ultimately lack in-depth understanding of the key cell types, cell-cell interactions, and molecular pathways involved in the neurogenic response after brain damage and their positive or otherwise deleterious impact. Here we will review the evidence on the stroke-induced neurogenic response and on its potential repercussions on functional outcome. First, we will briefly describe subventricular zone (SVZ) neurogenesis after stroke beside the main evidence supporting its positive role on functional restoration after stroke. Then, we will focus on hippocampal subgranular zone (SGZ) neurogenesis due to the relevance of hippocampus in cognitive functions; we will outline compelling evidence that supports that, after stroke, SGZ neurogenesis may adopt a maladaptive plasticity response further contributing to the development of post-stroke cognitive impairment and dementia. Finally, we will discuss the therapeutic potential of specific steps in the neurogenic cascade that might ameliorate brain malfunctioning and the development of post-stroke cognitive impairment in the chronic phase. This work was supported by the grants from Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, PID2019-106581RB-I00 (MM); Leducq Foundation for Cardiovascular Research, TNE-19CVD01 (MM); Fundación La Caixa, HR17_00527 (MM); Instituto de Salud Carlos III and co-financed by the European Development Regional Fund “A Way to Achieve Europe,” PI20/00535 and RETICS RD16/0019/0009 (IL); by contracts FJC-039343-I (AG-C) from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation; and FPU01405265 (VM) and FPU19/02989 (EF) from the Spanish Ministry of Universities.
