[EN]The physico-chemical processes of decay in building materials and, particularly those affecting petreum materials, obey to different causes as composition, morphology, texture, the orientation of the material in the building and, mainly, its interaction with the environment. Because of their chemical composition, limestone materials may undergo alterations when they are in contact with aggresive media. Rain water or fog contain gases that may dissolve the stone provoking crusts due to salts precipitation. This work is based in the study of the decay processes of a limestone material from a building placed at Madrid. Peer reviewe

On the miscibility of cardiolipin with 1,2-diacyl phosphoglycerides: Binary mixtures of dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine and tetramyristoylcardiolipin

The thermotropic phase behavior and organization of model membranes composed of binary mixtures of the quadruple-chained, anionic phospholipid tetramyristoylcardiolipin (TMCL) with the double-chained zwitterionic phospholipid dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE) were examined by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. After equilibration at low temperature, DSC thermograms exhibited by binary mixtures of TMCL and DMPE containing < 80 mol DMPE exhibit a fairly energetic lower temperature endotherm and a highly energetic higher temperature endotherm. As the relative amount of TMCL in the mixture decreases, the temperature, enthalpy and cooperativity of the lower temperature endotherm also decreases and is not calorimetrically detectable when the TMCL content falls below 20 mol%. In contrast, the temperature of the higher temperature endotherm increases as the proportion of TMCL decreases, but the enthalpy and cooperativity both decrease and the transition endotherms become multimodal. The FTIR spectroscopic results indicate that the lower temperature endotherm corresponds to a lamellar crystalline (Lc) to lamellar gel (Lβ) phase transition and that the higher temperature transition involves the conversion of the Lβ phase to the lamellar liquid-crystalline (Lα) phase. Moreover, the FTIR spectroscopic signatures observed at temperatures below the onset of the Lc/Lβ phase transitions are consistent with the coexistence of structures akin to a TMCL-like Lc phase and the L β phase, and with the relative amount of the TMCL-like L c phase increasing progressively as the TMCL content of the mixture increases. These latter observations suggest that the TMCL and DMPE components of these mixtures are poorly miscible at temperatures below the L β/Lα phase transition temperature. Poor miscibility of these two components is also suggested by the complexity of the DSC thermograms observed at the Lβ/Lα phase transitions of these mixtures and with the complex relationship between their Lβ/Lα phase transition temperatures and the composition of the mixture. Overall, our data suggests that TMCL and DMPE may be intrinsically poorly miscible across a broad composition range, notwithstanding the homogeneity of the fatty acid chains of the two components and the modest (~ 10 °C) difference between their Lβ/Lα phase transition temperatures.Fil: Frías, María de los Ángeles. Stress-related anhedonia is associated with ventral striatum reactivity to reward and transdiagnostic psychiatric symptomatology

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) is consistently associated with increased risk for subsequent psychopathology. Individual differences in neural response to reward may confer vulnerability to stress-related psychopathology. Using data from the ongoing Duke Neurogenetics Study, the present study examined whether reward-related ventral striatum (VS) reactivity moderates the relationship between retrospectively reported ELS and anhedonic symptomatology. We further assessed whether individual differences in reward-related VS reactivity were associated with other depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol use via stress-related anhedonic symptoms and substance use-associated coping. METHOD: Blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was collected while participants (n = 906) completed a card-guessing task, which robustly elicits VS reactivity. ELS, anhedonic symptoms, other depressive symptoms, coping behavior, and alcohol use behavior were assessed with self-report questionnaires. Linear regressions were run to examine whether VS reactivity moderated the relationship between ELS and anhedonic symptoms. Structural equation models examined whether this moderation was indirectly associated with other depression symptoms and problematic alcohol use through its association with anhedonia. RESULTS: Analyses of data from 820 participants passing quality control procedures revealed that the VS × ELS interaction was associated with anhedonic symptoms (p = 0.011). Moreover, structural equation models indirectly linked this interaction to non-anhedonic depression symptoms and problematic alcohol use through anhedonic symptoms and substance-related coping. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that reduced VS reactivity to reward is associated with increased risk for anhedonia in individuals exposed to ELS. Such stress-related anhedonia is further associated with other depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol use through substance-related coping

Fermi's Sibyl: Mining the gamma-ray sky for dark matter subhaloes

Dark matter annihilation signals coming from Galactic subhaloes may account for a small fraction of unassociated point sources detected in the Second Fermi-LAT catalogue (2FGL). To investigate this possibility, we present Sibyl, a Random Forest classifier that offers predictions on class memberships for unassociated Fermi-LAT sources at high Galactic latitudes using gamma-ray features extracted from the 2FGL. Sibyl generates a large ensemble of classification trees that are trained to vote on whether a particular object is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or a pulsar. After training on a list of 908 identified/associated 2FGL sources, Sibyl reaches individual accuracy rates of up to 97.7% for AGNs and 96.5% for pulsars. Predictions for the 269 unassociated 2FGL sources at |b| > 10 degrees suggest that 216 are potential AGNs and 16 are potential pulsars (with majority votes greater than 70%). The remaining 37 objects are inconclusive, but none is an extreme outlier. These results could guide future quests for dark matter Galactic subhaloes.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Across the Caribbean, climate change will bring about not only challenges but also a wide array of opportunities, which lend greater significance to the region’s wealth of plant genetic resources. Realizing the potential of those resources to help ensure food security and build more-resilient agricultural systems in the face of climate change will require stronger regional cooperation. Its central aims should be to develop timely interventions across national borders that improve the collection, conservation, and sharing of plant genetic resources
