Determination of Frequency and Distribution of Hessian Fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) Biotypes in the Northeastern Soft Wheat Region
Fifteen collections of Hessian flies from the northern soft winter wheat region of the United States were used to determine the composition and frequency of biotypes. The wheat cultivars \u27Seneca\u27 (H7Hs), \u27Monon\u27 (H3), \u27Knox 62\u27 (~, H7Hg), and \u27Abe\u27 (Hs) were used as differentials. Biotypes J and L replaced biotype B as the prevalent biotype in Indiana, since wheat cultivars having the Hs and the H6 genes have been grown. Biotype GP, the least virulent of any Hessian fly biotypes, was still present in New York indicating that wheat cuItivars with no genes for resistance are still being grown there. The genetic variability of Hessian fly biotypes that enables them to overcome the resistance in wheat cultivars is discussed
Bridging the gap: an exploration of the use and impact of positive action in the UK
Despite laws in Britain permitting limited positive action initiatives to combat disadvantage faced by minority groups in employment since the mid-1970s, the subject has notoriously been a neglected and highly controversial area in the UK. Notwithstanding the potential provided by sections 158 and 159 of the Equality Act 2010, it still appears that organisations prefer to steer clear of this opportunity to address disadvantage suffered by protected groups. Whilst there is a body of work considering the theoretical importance of positive action in the UK, there is a lack of empirical exploration of the practical implications of these provisions. This paper will provide a brief overview of the theoretical context and current positive action legislative provisions within the UK. In light of this context, the early findings of a small-scale qualitative study carried out by the authors will be discussed looking at the experiences of a purposive sample of public and private employers in relation to the positive action provisions of the Equality Act 2010. Early research findings suggest that whilst there was a clear willingness and openness by employers to use of outreach measures in order to redress disadvantage, there was evident wariness regarding a move towards preferential treatment as expounded by section 159. Whilst respondents appeared to appreciate the business case for and utility of the positive action measures under section 158, there was far less enthusiasm for more direct preferential treatment, with many respondents raising serious concerns regarding this. These concerns often reflected a highly sensitive risk-based approach towards any action that could expose their organisation to the possibility of âreverse discriminationâ
The COMPLETE Nature of the Warm Dust Ring in Perseus
The Perseus molecular cloud complex is a ~30pc long chain of molecular clouds
most well-known for the two star-forming clusters NGC1333 and IC348 and the
well-studied outflow source in B5. However, when studied at mid- to
far-infrared wavelengths the region is dominated by a ~10pc diameter shell of
warm dust, likely generated by an HII region caused by the early B-star
HD278942. Using a revised calibration technique the COMPLETE team has produced
high-sensitivity temperature and column-density maps of the Perseus region from
IRAS Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) 60 and 100um data. In this paper, we combine the
ISSA based dust-emission maps with other observations collected as part of the
COMPLETE Survey, along with archival H-alpha and MSX observations. Molecular
line observations from FCRAO and extinction maps constructed by applying the
NICER method to the 2MASS catalog provide independent estimates of the ``true''
column-density of the shell. H-alpha emission in the region of the shell
confirms that it is most likely an HII region located behind the cloud complex,
and 8um data from MSX indicates that the shell may be interacting with the
cloud. Finally, the two polarisation components previously seen towards
background stars in the region can be explained by the association of the
stronger component with the shell. If confirmed, this would be the first
observation of a parsec-scale swept-up magnetic field.Comment: Accepted by ApJ. Figures have been compressed - full resolution

Corner transfer matrix renormalization group method for two-dimensional self-avoiding walks and other O(n) models
We present an extension of the corner transfer matrix renormalisation group
(CTMRG) method to O(n) invariant models, with particular interest in the
self-avoiding walk class of models (O(n=0)). The method is illustrated using an
interacting self-avoiding walk model. Based on the efficiency and versatility
when compared to other available numerical methods, we present CTMRG as the
method of choice for two-dimensional self-avoiding walk problems.Comment: 4 pages 7 figures Substantial rewrite of previous version to include

Clustering Phase Transitions and Hysteresis: Pitfalls in Constructing Network Ensembles
Ensembles of networks are used as null models in many applications. However,
simple null models often show much less clustering than their real-world
counterparts. In this paper, we study a model where clustering is enhanced by
means of a fugacity term as in the Strauss (or "triangle") model, but where the
degree sequence is strictly preserved -- thus maintaining the quenched
heterogeneity of nodes found in the original degree sequence. Similar models
had been proposed previously in [R. Milo et al., Science 298, 824 (2002)]. We
find that our model exhibits phase transitions as the fugacity is changed. For
regular graphs (identical degrees for all nodes) with degree k > 2 we find a
single first order transition. For all non-regular networks that we studied
(including Erdos - Renyi and scale-free networks) we find multiple jumps
resembling first order transitions, together with strong hysteresis. The latter
transitions are driven by the sudden emergence of "cluster cores": groups of
highly interconnected nodes with higher than average degrees. To study these
cluster cores visually, we introduce q-clique adjacency plots. We find that
these cluster cores constitute distinct communities which emerge spontaneously
from the triangle generating process. Finally, we point out that cluster cores
produce pitfalls when using the present (and similar) models as null models for
strongly clustered networks, due to the very strong hysteresis which
effectively leads to broken ergodicity on realistic time scales.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure
