Ionisation of PF3: absolute partial electron ionisation cross sections and the formation and reactivity of dication states
Absolute partial electron ionisation cross sections, and precursor-specific partial electron ionisation cross sections, for the formation of cations from phosphorus trifluoride (PF3) are reported over the electron energy range 50-200 eV. The absolute values are determined by the measurement of cross sections relative to the formation of PF3+ using 2D ion-ion coincidence time-of-flight mass spectrometry and subsequent scaling using binary encounter-Bethe calculations of the total ionisation cross section. This new dataset significantly augments the partial ionisation cross sections for electron ionization PF3 found in literature, addressing previous discrepancies in the branching ratios of product ions, and provides the first values for the precursor-specific cross sections. Comparisons to calculated cross sections from the literature are encouraging, although there are discrepancies for individual ions. The coincidence experiments indicate that double and triple ionisation generate approximately 20 % of the cationic ionisation products at 200 eV electron energy. One dissociative dication state, dissociating to PF2+ + F+, is clearly identified as the lowest triplet state of PF32+ and five different dications (PF32+, PF22+, PF2+, P2+ and F2+) are detected in the mass spectra. The dication energetics revealed by the experiments are supported by a computational investigation of the dication’s electronic structure. The cross sections reported will allow more accurate modelling of the role of the ionization of PF3 in energetic environments. A first investigation of the bimolecular reactivity of metastable states of PF32+ is also reported. In collisions with Ar, O2 and CO dissociative single electron transfer dominates the product ion yield, whereas collision-induced dissociation of the dication is important following collisions with Ne. Consideration of the energetics of these processes indicates the reactant dication beam contains ions in both the ground singlet state and the first excited triplet state. The deduction regarding the longevity of the triplet state is supported by metastable signals in the coincidence spectra. Weak signals corresponding to the formation of ArF+ are detected following PF32+ collisions with Ar, and experimental and computational considerations indicate this new chemical bond is formed via a collision complex
Double Charge Exchange And Configuration Mixing
The energy dependence of forward pion double charge exchange reactions on
light nuclei is studied for both the Ground State transition and the
Double-Isobaric-Analog-State transitions. A common characteristic of these
double reactions is a resonance-like peak around 50 MeV pion lab energy. This
peak arises naturally in a two-step process in the conventional pion-nucleon
system with proper handling of nuclear structure and pion distortion. A
comparison among the results of different nuclear structure models demonstrates
the effects of configuration mixing. The angular distribution is used to fix

Magnetocaloric effect and magnetic cooling near a field-induced quantum-critical point
The presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) can significantly affect the
thermodynamic properties of a material at finite temperatures T. This is
reflected, e.g., in the entropy landscape S(T, r) in the vicinity of a QCP,
yielding particularly strong variations for varying the tuning parameter r such
as pressure or magnetic field B. Here we report on the determination of the
critical enhancement of near a B-induced QCP via
absolute measurements of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), , and demonstrate that the accumulation of entropy around the QCP can be
used for efficient low-temperature magnetic cooling. Our proof of principle is
based on measurements and theoretical calculations of the MCE and the cooling
performance for a Cu-containing coordination polymer, which is a very
good realization of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain - one of the
simplest quantum-critical systems.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Field-Orientation Dependent Heat Capacity Measurements at Low Temperatures with a Vector Magnet System
We describe a heat capacity measurement system for the study of the
field-orientation dependence for temperatures down to 50 mK. A "Vector Magnet"
combined with a mechanical rotator for the dewar enables the rotation of the
magnetic field without mechanical heating in the cryostat by friction. High
reproducibility of the field direction, as well as an angular resolution of
better than 0.01 degree, is obtained. This system is applicable to other kinds
of measurements which require a large sample space or an adiabatic sample
environment, and can also be used with multiple refrigerator inserts

Pion-nucleus elastic scattering on 12C, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb at 400 and 500 MeV
Pion-nucleus elastic scattering at energies above the Delta(1232) resonance
is studied using both pi+ and pi- beams on 12C, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb. The
present data provide an opportunity to study the interaction of pions with
nuclei at energies where second-order corrections to impulse approximation
calculations should be small. The results are compared with other data sets at
similar energies, and with four different first-order impulse approximation
calculations. Significant disagreement exists between the calculations and the
data from this experiment
Destruction of density-wave states by a pseudo-gap in high magnetic fields: application to (TMTSF)ClO
A model is presented for the destruction of density-wave states in
quasi-one-dimensional crystals by high magnetic fields. The model is consistent
with previously unexplained properties of the organic conductors
(TMTSF)ClO and (BEDT-TTF)MHg(SCN) (M=K,Rb,Tl). As the magnetic
field increases quasi-one-dimensional density-wave fluctuations increase,
producing a pseudo-gap in the electronic density of states near the transition
temperature. When the pseudo-gap becomes larger than the mean-field transition

The vulnerability of public spaces: challenges for UK hospitals under the 'new' terrorist threat
This article considers the challenges for hospitals in the United Kingdom that arise from the threats of mass-casualty terrorism. Whilst much has been written about the role of health care as a rescuer in terrorist attacks and other mass-casualty crises, little has been written about health care as a victim within a mass-emergency setting. Yet, health care is a key component of any nation's contingency planning and an erosion of its capabilities would have a significant impact on the generation of a wider crisis following a mass-casualty event. This article seeks to highlight the nature of the challenges facing elements of UK health care, with a focus on hospitals both as essential contingency responders under the United Kingdom's civil contingencies legislation and as potential victims of terrorism. It seeks to explore the potential gaps that exist between the task demands facing hospitals and the vulnerabilities that exist within them
Crossing the Dripline to 11N Using Elastic Resonance Scattering
The level structure of the unbound nucleus 11N has been studied by 10C+p
elastic resonance scattering in inverse geometry with the LISE3 spectrometer at
GANIL, using a 10C beam with an energy of 9.0 MeV/u. An additional measurement
was done at the A1200 spectrometer at MSU. The excitation function above the
10C+p threshold has been determined up to 5 MeV. A potential-model analysis
revealed three resonance states at energies 1.27 (+0.18-0.05) MeV (Gamma=1.44
+-0.2 MeV), 2.01(+0.15-0.05) MeV, (Gamma=0.84 +-$0.2 MeV) and 3.75(+-0.05) MeV,
(Gamma=0.60 +-0.05 MeV) with the spin-parity assignments I(pi) =1/2+, 1/2- and
5/2+, respectively. Hence, 11N is shown to have a ground state parity inversion
completely analogous to its mirror partner, 11Be. A narrow resonance in the
excitation function at 4.33 (+-0.05) MeV was also observed and assigned

A Study of the Quasi-elastic (e,e'p) Reaction on C, Fe and Au
We report the results from a systematic study of the quasi-elastic (e,e'p)
reaction on C, Fe and Au performed at Jefferson Lab. We
have measured nuclear transparency and extracted spectral functions (corrected
for radiation) over a Q range of 0.64 - 3.25 (GeV/c) for all three
nuclei. In addition we have extracted separated longitudinal and transverse
spectral functions at Q of 0.64 and 1.8 (GeV/c) for these three nuclei
(except for Au at the higher Q). The spectral functions are
compared to a number of theoretical calculations. The measured spectral
functions differ in detail but not in overall shape from most of the
theoretical models. In all three targets the measured spectral functions show
considerable excess transverse strength at Q = 0.64 (GeV/c), which is

Measurements of Deuteron Photodisintegration up to 4.0 GeV
The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(gamma,p)n
reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator
Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. We report the cross sections at the proton
center-of-mass angles of 36, 52, 69 and 89 degrees. These results are in
reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89 and 69
degree data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon
energy. The 36 and 52 degree data disagree with the counting rule behavior. The
quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model of nuclear reactions involving reduced
