    Standard and Non-standard Extensions of Lie algebras

    We study the problem of quadruple extensions of simple Lie algebras. We find that, adding a new simple root α+4\alpha_{+4}, it is not possible to have an extended Kac-Moody algebra described by a Dynkin-Kac diagram with simple links and no loops between the dots, while it is possible if α+4\alpha_{+4} is a Borcherds imaginary simple root. We also comment on the root lattices of these new algebras. The folding procedure is applied to the simply-laced triple extended Lie algebras, obtaining all the non-simply laced ones. Non- standard extension procedures for a class of Lie algebras are proposed. It is shown that the 2-extensions of E8E_{8}, with a dot simply linked to the Dynkin-Kac diagram of E9E_{9}, are rank 10 subalgebras of E10E_{10}. Finally the simple root systems of a set of rank 11 subalgebras of E11E_{11}, containing as sub-algebra E10E_{10}, are explicitly written.Comment: Revised version. Inaccurate statements corrected.     Re-evaluation of the Gottfried sum using neural networks

    We provide a determination of the Gottfried sum from all available data, based on a neural network parametrization of the nonsinglet structure function F_2. We find S_G=0.244 +- 0.045, closer to the quark model expectation S_G=1/3 than previous results.     Female Ex-Offenders Transitioning Into Society

    The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine female ex-offenders’ perceptions of their lived experience(s) while transitioning into society after incarceration. This study examined risk factors that female ex-offenders faced while transitioning into society asking the question, “What are the lived experiences of female ex-offenders who utilized transitional housing for reentry with regard to their perception of the benefits of certain services/offerings and staff support?” Nine participants were part of the study ranging from 25–64 years of age, with the majority being between the ages of 25 and 55 years old, residing originally in five different states. Sixty percent were unemployed or retired and only one was currently obtaining educational training. The researcher conducted, transcribed, and analyzed three half-hour Zoom sessions. A 10-item questionnaire was given to the participants to analyze their perceptions of their lived experiences while transitioning into society. Outcomes were increased awareness and giving a voice to both the female ex-offenders and the administration and staff of the transitional homes. Recommendations are that more IPA studies need to be conducted to understand the lived experiences of the female ex-offender and find ways to correct the deficiencies they face.     A study of the relation of organizational climate to individually guided education programs in selected elementary schools in an eastern Virginia city school division

    Purpose. This study was undertaken to investigate the following major questions: (1) Is there a significant difference in the organizational climate of IGE and non-IGE schools in an eastern Virginia city school division? (2) Do IGE and non-IGE schools differ significantly on each of the eight subtests identified by Halpin and Croft (1963) in the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire--Disengagement, Hindrance, Esprit and Intimacy (teacher behavior), Aloofness, Production Emphasis, Thrust, and Consideration (principal behavior)?;Scope of the Study. The Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire (Halpin and Croft, 1963) was selected as the research tool for use in collecting the data for the study. In addition, information regarding teacher absenteeism and turnover was analyzed. All faculty members in the six schools sampled (100 percent) participated by completing the OCDQ. The t-test was performed to test for significance at the .05 level of confidence. A one-way analysis of variance was employed across schools. When significant f ratios were produced, the Scheffe test was used to probe the difference between the mean scores of the eight subtests of the OCDQ.;Findings. An analysis of the data revealed: (1) No significant differences in teacher perceptions of organizational climate in IGE and non-IGE schools were found. (2) A significant difference was observed for subtest eight, Consideration, with IGE schools achieving a higher score. (3) The one-way analysis of variance produced an f ratio significant at the .01 level of confidence for seven of the eight subtests of the OCDQ. (4) Using the Scheffe test to compare all pairs of means of the seven subtests with significant f scores, it was found that the IGE school implementing the greatest number of the thirty-five outcomes of the IGE process achieved a climate which tended to be more open than any of the other five schools. (5) Information collected on teacher absenteeism showed a significant difference in teacher attendance in IGE schools.;Conclusions. Consistent with the findings of this study, the following conclusions appear to be warranted: (1) The expressed willingness to become involved in the IGE process does not appear to affect teacher perceptions of school climate. (2) High implementation involvement in the IGE process appears to produce more favorable teacher perceptions of school climate. (3) Teachers employed in IGE schools in this sample had better attendance records than did teachers in non-IGE schools. (5) Neither IGE nor non-IGE schools as a group could be characterized as one of the six climate types described by Halpin and Croft (1963)

    On the analytical approximation to the GLAP evolution at small x and moderate Q^2

    Comparing the numerically evaluated solution to the leading order GLAP equations with its analytical small-x approximation we have found that in the domain covered by a large fraction of the HERA data the analytic approximation has to be augmented by the formally non-leading term which has been usually neglected. The corrected formula fits the data much better and provides a natural explanation of some of the deviations from the σ\sigma scaling observed in the HERA kinematical range.Comment: LaTeX, 13 pages including 6 figures, figure 5 replaced, to appear in Phys.     Anomaly-Induced Magnetic Screening in 2+1 dimensional QED at Finite Density

    We show that in 2+1 dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics an external magnetic field applied to a finite density of massless fermions is screened, due to a 2+12+1-dimensional realization of the underlying 22-dimensional axial anomaly of the space components of the electric current. This is shown to imply screening of the magnetic field, i.e., the Meissner effect.     Large-scale study of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system in Fornax

    We present a Washington C and Kron-Cousins R photometric study of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster. A large areal coverage of 1 square degree around NGC 1399 is achieved with three adjoining fields of the MOSAIC II Imager at the CTIO 4-m telescope. Working on such a large field, we can perform the first indicative determination of the total size of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system. The estimated angular extent, measured from the NGC 1399 centre and up to a limiting radius where the areal density of blue globular clusters falls to 30 per cent of the background level, is 45 +/- 5 arcmin, which corresponds to 220 - 275 kpc at the Fornax distance. The bimodal colour distribution of this globular cluster system, as well as the different radial distribution of blue and red clusters, up to these large distances from the parent galaxy, are confirmed. The azimuthal globular cluster distribution exhibits asymmetries that might be understood in terms of tidal stripping of globulars from NGC 1387, a nearby galaxy. The good agreement between the areal density profile of blue clusters and a projected dark-matter NFW density profile is emphasized.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
