Collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a 1D optical lattice
We study low-lying collective modes of a horizontally elongated 87Rb
condensate produced in a 3D magnetic harmonic trap with the addition of a 1D
periodic potential which is provided by a laser standing-wave along the
horizontal axis. While the transverse breathing mode results unperturbed,
quadrupole and dipole oscillations along the optical lattice are strongly
modified. Precise measurements of the collective mode frequencies at different
height of the optical barriers provide a stringent test of the theoretical
model recently introduced [M.Kraemer et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 180404 (2002)].Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Automatic detection of arcs and arclets formed by gravitational lensing
We present an algorithm developed particularly to detect gravitationally
lensed arcs in clusters of galaxies. This algorithm is suited for automated
surveys as well as individual arc detections. New methods are used for image
smoothing and source detection. The smoothing is performed by so-called
anisotropic diffusion, which maintains the shape of the arcs and does not
disperse them. The algorithm is much more efficient in detecting arcs than
other source finding algorithms and the detection by eye.Comment: A&A in press, 12 pages, 16 figure
Test of Information Theory on the Boltzmann Equation
We examine information theory using the steady-state Boltzmann equation. In a
nonequilibrium steady-state system under steady heat conduction, the
thermodynamic quantities from information theory are calculated and compared
with those from the steady-state Boltzmann equation. We have found that
information theory is inconsistent with the steady-state Boltzmann equation.Comment: 12 page
Reduction of tilt rotor download using circulation control
The effect of boundary layer control blowing on the download of a wing in the wake of a hovering rotor was measured in a small scale experiment. The objective was to evaluate the potential of boundary layer control blowing for reducing tilt rotor download. Variations were made in rotor thrust coefficient, blowing pressure ratio, and blowing slot height. The effect of these parameter variations on the wing download and wing surface pressures is presented. The boundary layer control blowing caused reductions in the wing download of 25 to 55 percent
Quasi 2D Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice
We study the phase transition of a gas of Rb atoms to quantum degeneracy in
the combined potential of a harmonically confining magnetic trap and the
periodic potential of an optical lattice. For high optical lattice potentials
we observe a significant change in the temperature dependency of the population
of the ground state of the system. The experimental results are explained by
the subsequent formation of quasi 2D condensates in the single lattice sites.Comment: 7 pages (including 3 figures
Evolutionary advantages of adaptive rewarding
Our wellbeing depends as much on our personal success, as it does on the
success of our society. The realization of this fact makes cooperation a very
much needed trait. Experiments have shown that rewards can elevate our
readiness to cooperate, but since giving a reward inevitably entails paying a
cost for it, the emergence and stability of such behavior remain elusive. Here
we show that allowing for the act of rewarding to self-organize in dependence
on the success of cooperation creates several evolutionary advantages that
instill new ways through which collaborative efforts are promoted. Ranging from
indirect territorial battle to the spontaneous emergence and destruction of
coexistence, phase diagrams and the underlying spatial patterns reveal
fascinatingly reach social dynamics that explains why this costly behavior has
evolved and persevered. Comparisons with adaptive punishment, however, uncover
an Achilles heel of adaptive rewarding that is due to over-aggression, which in
turn hinders optimal utilization of network reciprocity. This may explain why,
despite of its success, rewarding is not as firmly weaved into our societal

Properties of high-z galaxies as seen through lensing clusters
We discuss the first results obtained on the study of a sample of high-z
galaxies (2 < z < 7), using the gravitational amplification effect in the core
of lensing clusters. Sources are located close to the critical lines in
clusters with well constrained mass distributions, and selected through
photometric redshifts, computed on a large wavelength domain, and lens
