Opening up communication in adaptive management
The question of what characterizes communication in Swedish moose management and how this reflects the concept of adaptive management has challenged the need for a thorough
exploration of how stakeholders in decision-making processes jointly coordinate their knowledge. Adaptive management is itself a concept that has gained significant space in natural resource management literature, in which the recognition is that there is a perceived need to manage resources on a continuous basis, as well as the requirement of diverse stakeholders to convene and generate the knowledge needed to face uncertain situations and to learn from them. This requirement rests on the tacit assumption that concerned stakeholders need to intersubjectively co-construct their understandings by ways of coordinating
knowledge through a communicative format that nurtures the adaptive capacity in response to both ecological and social changes. When this capacity is reduced, so are the opportunities that enable the advocated potentials for successful management that this concept rests upon.
The aim of this thesis is to analyze and describe whether the accomplishment of decisionmaking processes within a moose management group apply the criteria needed to accomplish the normative ideals of adaptive management and to discuss possible consequences that may arise when these ideals are not met. By using discursive closures and openings as theoretical concepts to operationalize communicative rationality, the communicative practices for a
moose management group have been characterized through the analysis of a systematic interpretation of meanings in order to ascertain how knowledge is coordinated within the
group. Presented as a single case study, the meeting held by this group provided ample material for analysis which has been categorized into six episodes, revealing several
discursive closures as well as openings. The presence of discursive closures, partly in combination with a conceptual use of elements of uncertainty and conflicts, yielded systematic exclusions of knowledge, values and perspectives. The effect of these practices, which narrow the scope for divergent perspectives to be expressed that, if elaborated upon, may have been of potential relevance for management but which could not be assessed as claims to validity, were not rationally pursued. Consequently, opportunities for adaptive management were reduced. The findings presented in this paper raise the issue of whether
such management groups can develop a procedural communicative format in which interaction is guided towards understanding by a systematic exclusion of discursive closures that otherwise discourage such a format. It follows that there also is a need to investigate a wider range of groups to determine a more general view on how discursive closures appear and what function they serve in terms of adaptive prospects

One out of 60 : Individual learning in the South African school system
The purpose of this essay is to investigate whether or not the South African school systempredicates upon theories of individual learning. The investigation is carried out using threemethods, a textual analysis of the Curriculum, interviews with South African teachers andclassroom observations. The resulat is that there are some traits of individual learning in thecurriculum, in the answers of the teachers and in some of the education. In my conclusivediscussion I find that even if there are some traces of individual learning in the South Africanschool system it is not enough to say that the South African school system predicates upontheories of individual learning
Inclusion of children in need of special support : - preschool teachers' strategies for involving children in need of special support in teaching
The meaning of evaluation in learning skills
KehittÀmistehtÀvÀmme kÀsittelee arvioinnin merkitystÀ opiskelijoiden oppimistaitojen kehityksessÀ. Halusimme selvittÀÀ ensinnÀkin, miten arviointi vaikuttaa opiskelijoiden oppimismotivaatioon ja miten arvioinnin avulla voitaisiin lisÀtÀ oppimishalukkuutta ja kehittÀÀ oppimistaitoja. TyössÀmme esille tulleita tuloksia kÀytÀmme kehittÀÀksemme oppilaitoksessamme, Huittisten Ammatti- ja yrittÀjÀopistossa opiskelijoiden oppimistaitoja. Puutteellisista oppimistaidoista johtuviksi ongelmiksi ovat nousseet muun muassa huono opiskelumenestys, motivaation puute, vÀlinpitÀmÀttömyys opiskelua kohtaan ja pitkittynyt opiskeluaika. Toivomme löytÀvÀmme työstÀ ratkaisun nÀihin ongelmiin. KehittÀmistehtÀvÀn henkilökohtaisena tavoitteena pyrimme kumpikin kehittymÀÀn arvioijina ja saavuttamaan asiantuntemusta arvioinnista, jolla opiskelijan oppimistaidot kehittyvÀt. Tutustuimme työssÀmme oppimistaidon kÀsitteeseen. Oppimistaidolla tarkoitetaan muun muassa oppijan oman oppimistyylin tiedostamista, oppimistilanteeseen sopivan oppimisstrategian tietoista valintaa ja oppijan metakognitiivisten taitojen itsenÀistÀ kehittÀmistÀ. Oppimistaitoon liittyy lÀheisenÀ kÀsitteenÀ myös opiskelutaidon kÀsite. Opiskelutaito on suppeampi ja mekaanisempi, lÀhinnÀ konkreettisiin taitoihin liittyvÀ kÀsite. Opiskelija tarvitsee menestyÀkseen opinnoissaan kumpiakin taitoja. Arvioinnilla voidaan kannustaa ja tukea opiskelijaa ja antaa hÀnelle työkaluja parempaan oppimismenestykseen esimerkiksi itsearvioinnin kautta. Eri arviointitapoja tulisi hyödyntÀÀ laajasti ja arvioinnin tulisi ulottua koko oppimisprosessin ajalle. Toisen asteen oppilaitoksessa pitÀisi pyrkiÀ erityisesti autenttisiin arviointitapoihin. Oppilaitoksemme opettajien arviointitapojen monipuolistaminen ja yhtenÀisen arviointikulttuurin kehittÀminen ovat tapoja, joilla opiskelijoiden oppimistaitoja voidaan parantaa. Oppimistaitojen kehittÀmiseksi toteutamme niihin liittyvÀn kurssin, joka omalta osaltaan kehittÀÀ opiskelijoiden oppimistaitoja. Our work handels the meaning of evaluation in improvement of students learning skills. At first we wanted to find out how the evaluation affects to learning skills of the students and how we could improve students willingness to learn and skills to learn. The results we did find out during our work are going to be used to develop students learning skills in Huittinen Business and vocational college. Because the lack of learning skills students don't achieve as good degrees as they could, they lack motivation, negligence towards studying occures and graduation times are prolonged. We hope to find the solution to these problems from our results. Our personal goal is to improve ourselves as evaluators and to achieve evaluation expertise trough which the learning skills of our students improve. We studied the concept of learning skills in our work. Learning skills include ie. becoming concious of persons own methods of learning, conscious selecting of suitable learning strategy and independent developing of metacognitive skills. Closely connected to learning skills is also a concept of study skills. Study skills as concept is more narrow and mechanistic, mostly connected to concrete skills. To be able to succeed in his studies, student needs both of these skills. With evaluation we can encourage and support hin and also give him better tools to achieve better studying results through for example self-evaluation. Different evaluation methods should be used extensively and evaluation should cover whole studying process. Authentic evaluation methods should be used specially in vocational schools. Different ways to improve students learning skills are ie. diversification of teachers evaluation methods and creating standards of evaluation culture to our school. To improve learning skills we have decided to carry out learning skills course, which has contributory influence on improving learning skills of our students
