Simulation of ozone production in a complex circulation region using nested grids
International audienceDuring ESCOMPTE precampaign (15 June to 10 July 2000), three days of intensive pollution (IOP0) have been observed and simulated. The comprehensive RAMS model, version 4.3, coupled online with a chemical module including 29 species, has been used to follow the chemistry of the zone polluted over southern France. This online method can be used because the code is paralleled and the SGI 3800 computer is very powerful. Two runs have been performed: run1 with one grid and run2 with two nested grids. The redistribution of simulated chemical species (ozone, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) was compared to aircraft measurements and surface stations. The 2-grid run has given substantially better results than the one-grid run only because the former takes the outer pollutants into account. This online method helps to explain dynamics and to retrieve the chemical species redistribution with a good agreement
VUV Brillouin scattering from superpolished vitreous silica
A previous inelastic UV scattering experiment on silica glass is reproduced
using a high grade superpolished sample. In the pristine sample condition,
surface scattering is not observable compared to Rayleigh scattering from the
bulk. However, exposure to a fluence of the order of 100 J/cm at photon
energies slightly below the electronic gap generates observable surface damage.
This occurs after a few hours illumination with the monochromatic spectrometer
beam. No anomaly in the Brillouin linewidth was found up to an excitation

Electric-field induced capillary interaction of charged particles at a polar interface
We study the electric-field induced capillary interaction of charged
particles at a polar interface. The algebraic tails of the electrostatic
pressure of each charge results in a deformation of the interface . The resulting capillary interaction is repulsive and varies as with the particle distance. As a consequence, electric-field induced
capillary forces cannot be at the origin of the secondary minimum observed
recently for charged PMMA particles at on oil-water interface.Comment: June 200
Scaling the Temperature-dependent Boson Peak of Vitreous Silica with the high-frequency Bulk Modulus derived from Brillouin Scattering Data
The position and strength of the boson peak in silica glass vary considerably
with temperature . Such variations cannot be explained solely with changes
in the Debye energy. New Brillouin scattering measurements are presented which
allow determining the -dependence of unrelaxed acoustic velocities. Using a
velocity based on the bulk modulus, scaling exponents are found which agree
with the soft-potential model. The unrelaxed bulk modulus thus appears to be a
good measure for the structural evolution of silica with and to set the
energy scale for the soft potentials.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Observation of the onset of strong scattering on high frequency acoustic phonons in densified silica glass
The linewidth of longitudinal acoustic waves in densified silica glass is
obtained by inelastic x-ray scattering. It increases with a high power alpha of
the frequency up to a crossover where the waves experience strong scattering.
We find that \alpha is at least 4, and probably larger. Resonance and
hybridization of acoustic waves with the boson-peak modes seems to be a more
likely explanation for these findings than Rayleigh scattering from disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Letter

Network Modeling Sex Differences in Brain Integrity and Metabolic Health
Hypothesis-driven studies have demonstrated that sex moderates many of the relationships between brain health and cardiometabolic disease, which impacts risk for later-life cognitive decline. In the present study, we sought to further our understanding of the associations between multiple markers of brain integrity and cardiovascular risk in a midlife sample of 266 individuals by using network analysis, a technique specifically designed to examine complex associations among multiple systems at once. Separate network models were constructed for male and female participants to investigate sex differences in the biomarkers of interest, selected based on evidence linking them with risk for late-life cognitive decline: all components of metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia); neuroimaging-derived brain-predicted age minus chronological age; ratio of white matter hyperintensities to whole brain volume; seed-based resting state functional connectivity in the Default Mode Network, and ratios of N-acetyl aspartate, glutamate and myo-inositol to creatine, measured through proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Males had a sparse network (87.2% edges = 0) relative to females (69.2% edges = 0), indicating fewer relationships between measures of cardiometabolic risk and brain integrity. The edges in the female network provide meaningful information about potential mechanisms between brain integrity and cardiometabolic health. Additionally, Apolipoprotein ϔ4 (ApoE ϔ4) status and waist circumference emerged as central nodes in the female model. Our study demonstrates that network analysis is a promising technique for examining relationships between risk factors for cognitive decline in a midlife population and that investigating sex differences may help optimize risk prediction and tailor individualized treatments in the future
Anharmonic vs. relaxational sound damping in glasses: II. Vitreous silica
The temperature dependence of the frequency dispersion in the sound velocity
and damping of vitreous silica is reanalyzed. Thermally activated relaxation
accounts for the sound attenuation observed above 10 K at sonic and ultrasonic
frequencies. Its extrapolation to the hypersonic regime reveals that the
anharmonic coupling to the thermal bath becomes important in
Brillouin-scattering measurements. At 35 GHz and room temperature, the damping
due to this anharmonicity is found to be nearly twice that produced by
thermally activated relaxation. The analysis also reveals a sizeable velocity
increase with temperature which is not related with sound dispersion. This
suggests that silica experiences a gradual structural change that already
starts well below room temperature.Comment: 13 pages with 8 figure
The nature of the short wavelength excitations in vitreous silica: X-Rays Brillouin scattering study
The dynamical structure factor (S(Q,E)) of vitreous silica has been measured
by Inelastic X-ray Scattering varying the exchanged wavevector (Q) at fixed
exchanged energy (E) - an experimental procedure that, contrary to the usual
one at constant Q, provides spectra with much better identified inelastic
features. This allows the first direct evidence of Brillouin peaks in the
S(Q,E) of SiO_2 at energies above the Boson Peak (BP) energy, a finding that
excludes the possibility that the BP marks the transition from propagating to
