    Gas Phase Train in Upstream Oil & Gas Fields: PART-I Model Development

    The prime contribution of this paper is to provide a large scale system (LSS) model for the gas phase operation in upstream oil and gas plants. The process model consists of the three main gas conditioning processes which exist in most upstream oil and gas processing plants; these are gas sweetening, gas dehydration, and hydrocarbon dew-pointing. The function of such a model is to provide a realistic process representation to test and verify different process control approaches, specifically those which deal with highly interactive control loops

    Review of the literature and description of a case of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis requiring home parenteral nutrition

    We present a case of a 48 year old HIV patient, who had recurrent episodes of ascites since 2007. His history includes ischaemic heart disease, for which he was treated with atenolol from 2005 to 2007, and Type 2 diabetes; he was later started on propranolol 40  mg twice a day from 2007 for Didanosine-induced portal hypertension. Because of negative cultures and neutrophil count < 250 cells/μL, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis was excluded. However, some low grade-peritoneal irritation cannot be ruled out because his CRP varied from 24 to 258, during 2007 - 2009, without any other obvious inflammatory cause. He was finally diagnosed in July 2009 with sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) based on clinical features of intestinal obstruction, histology and imaging, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Propranolol was stopped in November 2009.  Because of the patient's severe intestinal obstruction, he was started on parenteral nutrition 2  L/day. Since then, his CRP has returned to normal levels and there is a great improvement of his clinical features. This case demonstrates beta-blockers as a potential cause of SEP, while the presence of some low-grade peritoneal inflammation leading to SEP is also very likely

    Tuberculosis in Dr Granville's mummy: a molecular re-examination of the earliest known Egyptian mummy to be scientifically examined and given a medical diagnosis

    ‘Dr Granville's mummy’ was described to the Royal Society of London in 1825 and was the first ancient Egyptian mummy to be subjected to a scientific autopsy. The remains are those of a woman, Irtyersenu, aged about 50, from the necropolis of Thebes and dated to about 600 BC. Augustus Bozzi Granville (1783–1872), an eminent physician and obstetrician, described many organs still in situ and attributed the cause of death to a tumour of the ovary. However, subsequent histological investigations indicate that the tumour is a benign cystadenoma. Histology of the lungs demonstrated a potentially fatal pulmonary exudate and earlier studies attempted to associate this with particular disease conditions. Palaeopathology and ancient DNA analyses show that tuberculosis was widespread in ancient Egypt, so a systematic search for tuberculosis was made, using specific DNA and lipid biomarker analyses. Clear evidence for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex DNA was obtained in lung tissue and gall bladder samples, based on nested PCR of the IS6110 locus. Lung and femurs were positive for specific M. tuberculosis complex cell-wall mycolic acids, demonstrated by high-performance liquid chromatography of pyrenebutyric acid–pentafluorobenzyl mycolates. Therefore, tuberculosis is likely to have been the major cause of death of Irtyersenu

    Reading behaviour project report 2016 : ‘Digital Magpies’ - the academic reading habits of undergraduate students

    Engagement with the Library is essential in delivering a successful student experience. A previous Library Impact Project found that students who use the Library more tend to achieve better academic results. However, analytics from library systems indicate declining book borrowing and electronic resource usage. Are students really reading less? Student academic reading patterns have adapted to the increase in digital resources. As a result they may be “reading smarter’’. Feedback indicates they expect to find and use information quickly, synthesising information from a variety of sources. As part of a commitment to improve retention and completion figures, the Library has initiated a Reading Behaviours project at the University of Salford, focused on the reading habits of undergraduate students. It explores what motivates their academic reading; whether reading patterns vary according to purpose or source, academic discipline, status, or age and what this means for our role in helping students to find resources. In light of findings, how should we tailor classroom training, e-learning and collaboration with academics to support the student journey? Several key issues have emerged during this project:1. Synthesizing information for an academic purpose2. Embedding information literacy as a flexible learning habit3. Supporting students as they adapt to new learning context

    Continuous heating of a giant X-ray flare on Algol

    Giant flares can release large amounts of energy within a few days: X-ray emission alone can be up to ten percent of the star's bolometric luminosity. These flares exceed the luminosities of the largest solar flares by many orders of magnitude, which suggests that the underlying physical mechanisms supplying the energy are different from those on the Sun. Magnetic coupling between the components in a binary system or between a young star and an accretion disk has been proposed as a prerequisite for giant flares. Here we report X-ray observations of a giant flare on Algol B, a giant star in an eclipsing binary system. We observed a total X-ray eclipse of the flare, which demonstrates that the plasma was confined to Algol B, and reached a maximum height of 0.6 stellar radii above its surface. The flare occurred around the south pole of Algol B, and energy must have been released continously throughout its life. We conclude that a specific extrastellar environment is not required for the presence of a flare, and that the processes at work are therefore similar to those on the Sun.Comment: Nature, Sept. 2 199
