    Doing the Möbius Strip: The politics of the Bailey Review

    In media and policy discourses on sexualisation, there has been an apparent split. Some have constructed young women as innocent children, incapable of meaningful sexual and commercial choices; others have treated young women as neo-liberal adults, agentic and savvy choice-makers. We analyse how the Bailey Review on the Sexualisation and Commercialisation of Childhood (published by the UK Department of Education) attempts to manage the tensions associated with making both arguments at once. We theorise the split as ‘doing the möbius strip’, as both sides agree on the assumption that commercial and sexual choice is either present or absent for young women. In this way, they reframe the contradictions and inequalities that shape young women’s behaviours as a problem of propriety and decency

    Improving the psychological evaluation of exercise referral: psychometric properties of the Exercise Referral Quality of Life Scale

    There is a growing need to assess the psychological outcomes of exercise referral and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence has called for the routine assessment of life-quality. However, a quality of life scale specific to the requirements of exercise referral is currently unavailable. Therefore, the aim of this study was to produce a quality of life measure for this purpose. The Exercise Referral Quality of Life Scale is a 22-item measure comprising three domains: mental and physical health, injury pain and illness and physical activity facilitators. Exploratory factor analysis determined the initial factor structure and was subsequently confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Additional scale properties were also assessed. The scale contributes to the global need for improved consistent psychological outcome assessment of exercise referral

    Machining centre performance monitoring with calibrated artefact probing

    Maintaining high levels of geometric accuracy in five-axis machining centres is of critical importance to many industries and applications. Numerous methods for error identification have been developed in both the academic and industrial fields; one commonly-applied technique is artefact probing, which can reveal inherent system errors at minimal cost and does not require high skill levels to perform. The primary focus of popular commercial solutions is on confirming machine capability to produce accurate workpieces, with the potential for short-term trend analysis and fault diagnosis through interpretation of the results by an experienced user. This paper considers expanding the artefact probing method into a performance monitoring system, benefitting both the onsite Maintenance Engineer and visiting specialist Engineer with accessibility of information and more effective means to form insight. A technique for constructing a data-driven tolerance threshold is introduced, describing the normal operating condition and helping protect against unwarranted settings induced by human error. A multifunctional graphical element is developed to present the data trends with tolerance threshold integration to maintain relevant performance context, and an automated event detector to highlight areas of interest or concern. The methods were developed on a simulated, demonstration dataset; then applied without modification to three case studies on data acquired from currently operating industrial machining centres to verify the methods. The data-driven tolerance threshold and event detector methods were shown to be effective at their respective tasks, and the merits of the multifunctional graphical display are presented and discussed

    Model Systems of Human Intestinal Flora, to Set Acceptable Daily Intakes of Antimicrobial Residues

    The veterinary use of antimicrobial drugs in food producing animals may result in residues in food, that might modify the consumer gut flora. This review compares three model systems that maintain a complex flora of human origin: (i) human flora associated (HFA) continuous flow cultures in chemostats, (ii) HFA mice, and (iii) human volunteers. The "No Microbial Effect Level" of an antibiotic on human flora, measured in one of these models, is used to set the accept¬able daily intake (ADI) for human consumers. Human volunteers trials are most relevant to set microbio¬log¬ical ADI, and may be considered as the "gold standard". However, human trials are very expensive and unethical. HFA chemostats are controlled systems, but tetracycline ADI calculated from a chemostat study is far above result of a human study. HFA mice studies are less expensive and better controlled than human trials. The tetracycline ADI derived from HFA mice studies is close to the ADI directly obtained in human volunteers
