    The presence of laws and mandates is associated with increased social norm enforcement

Such policies act not only as deterrents, but also as societal signposts for what is considered morally right and wrong within a society. In this paper we argue that the presence of laws and mandates may be associated with citizens’ inclination to engage in social norm enforcement within their own network. We studied this using four different datasets in different settings (text-and-drive laws, influenza vaccination mandates, speed limit laws, and COVID-19 mask mandates), in three different countries (total N = 3,156). In all datasets, we found associations between mandates or laws and the inclination to socially confront norm violators. This is in line with our theorizing that mandates and laws may help to increase citizens’ inclination to engage in social norm enforcement, and to foster interpersonal policing of behavior, inviting future research to establish more direct causal conclusions in this regard

    Direct powder extrusion 3d printing of praziquantel to overcome neglected disease formulation challenges in paediatric populations

    For the last 40 years, praziquantel has been the standard treatment for schistosomiasis, a neglected parasitic disease affecting more than 250 million people worldwide. However, there is no suitable paediatric formulation on the market, leading to off-label use and the splitting of commercial tablets for adults. In this study, we use a recently available technology, direct powder extrusion (DPE) three-dimensional printing (3DP), to prepare paediatric Printletsℱ (3D printed tablets) of amorphous solid dispersions of praziquantel with Kollidon¼ VA 64 and surfactants (Spanℱ 20 or Kolliphor¼ SLS). Printlets were successfully printed from both pellets and powders obtained from extrudates by hot melt extrusion (HME). In vitro dissolution studies showed a greater than four-fold increase in praziquantel release, due to the formation of amorphous solid dispersions. In vitro palatability data indicated that the printlets were in the range of praziquantel tolerability, highlighting the taste masking capabilities of this technology without the need for additional taste masking excipients. This work has demonstrated the possibility of 3D printing tablets using pellets or powder forms obtained by HME, avoiding the use of filaments in fused deposition modelling 3DP. Moreover, the main formulation hurdles of praziquantel, such as low drug solubility, inadequate taste, and high and variable dose requirements, can be overcome using this technology

    Wilson Lines and a Canonical Basis of SU(4) Heterotic Standard Models

    The spontaneous breaking of SU(4) heterotic standard models by Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson lines to the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1) x U(1) is explored. The two-dimensional subspace of the Spin(10) Lie algebra that commutes with su(3)_C + su(2)_L is analyzed. It is shown that there is a unique basis for which the initial soft supersymmetry breaking parameters are uncorrelated and for which the U(1) x U(1) field strengths have no kinetic mixing at any scale. If the Wilson lines "turn on" at different scales, there is an intermediate regime with either a left-right or a Pati-Salam type model. We compute their spectra directly from string theory, and adjust the associated mass parameter so that all gauge parameters exactly unify. A detailed analysis of the running gauge couplings and soft gaugino masses is presented.Comment: 59 pages, 9 figure

Temida pelos residentes locais pela alta letalidade, sendo clinicamente uma hepato-encefalopatia de evolução fulminante (mĂ©dia de 5 a 6 dias). Dos que apresentam manifestaçÔes neurolĂłgicas 90% evoluem a Ăłbito. A doença Ă© popularmente conhecida como febre negra de LĂĄbrea e pelos patologistas como hepatite de LĂĄbrea pela histopatologia hepĂĄtica mostrar o aspecto vacuolar dos hepatĂłcitos, daĂ­ considerarem-na uma nova doença. Incide principalmente em crianças e adolescentes do sexo masculino. O achado do HBsAg e de marcadores de vĂ­rus da hepatite D no soro e fĂ­gado dos pacientes, levaram os pesquisadores a considerarem a febre negra de LĂĄbrea como uma superinfecção ou coinfecção do HDV.     Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) can be used to assess individual patients over time

    BACKGROUND: The Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT10) has been proposed as the first tool to implement the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma initiative guidelines in clinical practice. To serve this purpose, it must have adequate properties to assess the control of an individual over time. This study aimed to prospectively assess the test-retest reliability, responsiveness and longitudinal validity of CARAT10. METHODS: Adults with asthma and allergic rhinitis were enrolled at 4 outpatient clinics of Portuguese central hospitals. At each of the two visits, 4 to 6 weeks apart, patients filled out CARAT10 and additional questionnaires, followed by a medical evaluation blinded to the questionnaires' answers. RESULTS: From the 62 patients included, 51 patients completely filled out CARAT10 at both visits. The test-retest reliability, computed as an intra-class correlation coefficient, was 0.82. Regarding responsiveness, a significant change (p = 0.002) of CARAT10 score in clinically unstable patients was observed (95%CI -5.08; -1.31) and the Guyatt's responsiveness index was 1.54. As for the longitudinal validity assessment, the correlation coefficients of the changes of CARAT10 scores with those of ACQ5 and symptoms VAS ranged from 0.49 to 0.65, while with the physician assessment of control they ranged from 0.31 to 0.41. CONCLUSION: CARAT10 has good test-retest reliability, responsiveness and longitudinal validity. It can be used to assess control of allergic rhinitis and asthma, both to compare groups in clinical studies and to evaluate individual patients in clinical practice

    Dynamics of early establishment of SARS-CoV-2 VOC Omicron lineages in Minas Gerais, Brazil

    Brazil is one of the nations most affected by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The introduction and establishment of new virus variants can be related to an increase in cases and fatalities. The emergence of Omicron, the most modified SARS-CoV-2 variant, caused alarm for the public health of Brazil. In this study, we examined the effects of the Omicron introduction in Minas Gerais (MG), the second-most populous state of Brazil. A total of 430 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) samples from November 2021 to June 2022 from Belo Horizonte (BH) city were sequenced. These newly sequenced genomes comprise 72% of all previously available SARS-CoV-2 genomes for the city. Evolutionary analysis of novel viral genomes reveals that a great diversity of Omicron sublineages have circulated in BH, a pattern in-keeping with observations across Brazil more generally. Bayesian phylogeographic reconstructions indicate that this diversity is a product of a large number of international and national importations. As observed previously, SĂŁo Paulo state is shown as a significant hub for viral spread throughout the country, contributing to around 70% of all viral Omicron introductions detected in MG
