Low energy magnetic excitations of the Mn_{12}-acetate spin cluster observed by neutron scattering
We performed high resolution diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering
measurements of Mn_{12}-acetate. Using a very high energy resolution, we could
separate the energy levels corresponding to the splitting of the lowest S
multiplet. Data were analyzed within a single spin model (S=10 ground state),
using a spin Hamiltonian with parameters up to 4^{th} order.
The non regular spacing of the transition energies unambiguously shows the
presence of high order terms in the anisotropy (D= -0.457(2) cm^{-1}, B_4^0 =
-2.33(4) 10^{-5}cm^{-1}).
The relative intensity of the lowest energy peaks is very sensitive to the
small transverse term, supposed to be mainly responsible for quantum tunneling.
This allows an accurate determination of this term in zero magnetic field
(B_4^4 = \pm 3.0(5) 10^{-5} cm^{-1}). The neutron results are discussed in view

Spin dynamics of Mn12-acetate in the thermally-activated tunneling regime: ac-susceptibility and magnetization relaxation
In this work, we study the spin dynamics of Mn12-acetate molecules in the
regime of thermally assisted tunneling. In particular, we describe the system
in the presence of a strong transverse magnetic field. Similar to recent
experiments, the relaxation time/rate is found to display a series of
resonances; their Lorentzian shape is found to stem from the tunneling. The
dynamic susceptibility is calculated starting from the microscopic
Hamiltonian and the resonant structure manifests itself also in .
Similar to recent results reported on another molecular magnet, Fe8, we find
oscillations of the relaxation rate as a function of the transverse magnetic
field when the field is directed along a hard axis of the molecules. This
phenomenon is attributed to the interference of the geometrical or Berry phase.
We propose susceptibility experiments to be carried out for strong transverse
magnetic fields to study of these oscillations and for a better resolution of

Detailed single crystal EPR lineshape measurements for the single molecule magnets Fe8Br and Mn12-ac
It is shown that our multi-high-frequency (40-200 GHz) resonant cavity
technique yields distortion-free high field EPR spectra for single crystal
samples of the uniaxial and biaxial spin S = 10 single molecule magnets (SMMs)
[Mn12O12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4].2CH3COOH.4H2O and [Fe8O2(OH)12(tacn)6]Br8.9H2O. The
observed lineshapes exhibit a pronounced dependence on temperature, magnetic
field, and the spin quantum numbers (Ms values) associated with the levels
involved in the transitions. Measurements at many frequencies allow us to
separate various contributions to the EPR linewidths, including significant
D-strain, g-strain and broadening due to the random dipolar fields of
neighboring molecules. We also identify asymmetry in some of the EPR lineshapes
for Fe8, and a previously unobserved fine structure to some of the EPR lines
for both the Fe8 and Mn12 systems. These findings prove relevant to the
mechanism of quantum tunneling of magnetization in these SMMs.Comment: Phys. Rev. B, accepted with minor revision

Persistent Activist Communication in Occupy Gezi
We revisit the notion of activist persistence against the backdrop of protest communication on Twitter. We take an event-based approach and examine Occupy Gezi, a series of protests that occurred in Turkey in the early summer of 2013. By cross-referencing survey data with longitudinal Twitter data and in-depth interviews, we investigate the relationship between biographical availability, relational and organisational ties, social and personal costs to persistent activism online and on-location. Contrary to expectations, we find no clear-cut relationship between those factors and sustained commitment to participation in the occupation. We show that persistent activist communication did not feed into enduring organisational structures despite the continuous online activity observed during and beyond the peak of the Gezi occupation. The article concludes with reflections on the organisational ramifications of persistent communication and its significance in a political context posing high risks to participation in dissident politics
Specific heat and heat conductivity of the BaTiO3 polycrystalline films with the thickness in the range 20 - 1100 nm
Thermal properties - specific heat and heat conductivity coefficient - of
polycrystalline BaTiO3 films on massive substrates were studied as a function
of the temperature and the film thickness by ac-hot probe method. The anomalies
of specific heat with decreasing of the film thickness from 1100 to 20 nm
revealed the reducing of critical temperature (Tc) and excess entropy of the
ferroelectric phase transition, which becomes diffused. The critical thickness

Model SNP development for complex genomes based on hexaploid oat using high-throughput 454 sequencing technology
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genetic markers are pivotal to modern genomics research; however, discovery and genotyping of molecular markers in oat has been hindered by the size and complexity of the genome, and by a scarcity of sequence data. The purpose of this study was to generate oat expressed sequence tag (EST) information, develop a bioinformatics pipeline for SNP discovery, and establish a method for rapid, cost-effective, and straightforward genotyping of SNP markers in complex polyploid genomes such as oat.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Based on cDNA libraries of four cultivated oat genotypes, approximately 127,000 contigs were assembled from approximately one million Roche 454 sequence reads. Contigs were filtered through a novel bioinformatics pipeline to eliminate ambiguous polymorphism caused by subgenome homology, and 96 <it>in silico </it>SNPs were selected from 9,448 candidate loci for validation using high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis. Of these, 52 (54%) were polymorphic between parents of the Ogle1040 Ă TAM O-301 (OT) mapping population, with 48 segregating as single Mendelian loci, and 44 being placed on the existing OT linkage map. Ogle and TAM amplicons from 12 primers were sequenced for SNP validation, revealing complex polymorphism in seven amplicons but general sequence conservation within SNP loci. Whole-amplicon interrogation with HRM revealed insertions, deletions, and heterozygotes in secondary oat germplasm pools, generating multiple alleles at some primer targets. To validate marker utility, 36 SNP assays were used to evaluate the genetic diversity of 34 diverse oat genotypes. Dendrogram clusters corresponded generally to known genome composition and genetic ancestry.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The high-throughput SNP discovery pipeline presented here is a rapid and effective method for identification of polymorphic SNP alleles in the oat genome. The current-generation HRM system is a simple and highly-informative platform for SNP genotyping. These techniques provide a model for SNP discovery and genotyping in other species with complex and poorly-characterized genomes.</p
High-density marker profiling confirms ancestral genomes of Avena species and identifies D-genome chromosomes of hexaploid oat
We investigated genomic relationships among 27 species of the genus Avena using high-density genetic markers revealed by genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS). Two methods of GBS analysis were used: one based on tag-level haplotypes that were previously mapped in cultivated hexaploid oat (A. sativa), and one intended to sample and enumerate tag-level haplotypes originating from all species under investigation. Qualitatively, both methods gave similar predictions regarding the clustering of species and shared ancestral genomes. Furthermore, results were consistent with previous phylogenies of the genus obtained with conventional approaches, supporting the robustness of whole genome GBS analysis. Evidence is presented to justify the final and definitive classification of the tetraploids A. insularis, A. maroccana (=A. magna), and A. murphyi as containing D-plus-C genomes, and not A-plus-C genomes, as is most often specified in past literature. Through electronic painting of the 21 chromosome representations in the hexaploid oat consensus map, we show how the relative frequency of matches between mapped hexaploid-derived haplotypes and AC (DC)-genome tetraploids vs. A- and C-genome diploids can accurately reveal the genome origin of all hexaploid chromosomes, including the approximate positions of inter-genome translocations. Evidence is provided that supports the continued classification of a diverged B genome in AB tetraploids, and it is confirmed that no extant A-genome diploids, including A. canariensis, are similar enough to the D genome of tetraploid and hexaploid oat to warrant consideration as a D-genome diploid.publishersversionPeer reviewe

"I'm not being rude, I'd want somebody normal" Adolescents' perception of their peers with Tourette's syndrome; an exploratory study
Background: Touretteâs syndrome (TS) is a highly stigmatised condition, and typically developing adolescentsâ motives and reason for excluding individuals with TS have not been examined.
Aims: The aim of the study was to understand how TS is conceptualised by adolescents and explore how individuals with TS are perceived by their typically developing peers.
Method: Free text writing and focus groups were used to elicit the views of twenty-two year ten students from a secondary school in South East England. Grounded theory was used to develop an analytical framework.
Result: Participantsâ understanding about the condition was construed from misconceptions, unfamiliarity and unanswered questions. Adolescents who conceived TS as a disorder beyond the individualâs control perceived their peers as being deprived of agency and strength and as straying from the boundaries of normalcy. People with TS were viewed as individuals deserving pity, and in need of support. Although participants maintained they had feelings of social politeness towards those with TS, they would avoid initiating meaningful social relationships with them due to fear of âsocial contaminationâ. Intergroup anxiety would also inhibit a close degree of social contact. Participants that viewed those with TS as responsible for their condition expressed a plenary desire for social distance. However, these behavioural intentions were not limited to adolescents that elicited inferences of responsibility to people with TS, indicating that attributional models of stigmatisation may be of secondary importance in the case of TS.
Implications for interventions to improve school belonging among youths with TS are discussed
